Restaurant Closings in 2012
Santana's Mexican on Gouin in Roxboro is papered up with an "a louer" sign.
Ripples ice cream (Montreal, Plateau)
Snackhappy beat me to it, Bo-bec IMO is much better than Ripples and I believe actually worth going out of the way for if you are looking for a traditional type of ice cream. No idea about the kulfi but I've tried some really good flavors the past few summers.
Jean-Talon Market 2012
Local strawberries are in, first batch already excellent with the warm weather. Will only get better I'm assuming.
BTW, lobster at Atkins 10.99/lb.
Spicy Island is back!
The chicken roti was missing some kick from the previous location, I guess we should have requested "extra spicy". How did you guys find it?
Jean-Talon Market 2012
Yup, what maximilien said, NE side of middle or last lane.
They had yogurt, Feta, Graviera cheese, baklava and other baked goods, trahana, candles, soaps (from what I noticed).
Jean-Talon Market 2012
The Greek nuns from Troupeau Benit have set up at JTM, they will be there for at least 1 month is what I was told. Their cheeses were discussed on this thread a few years ago. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/650367
Their website is---

Spicy Island is back!
Cool, is it that location next to the Couche Tard where there was an Indian bakery?
I was talking to the owner of Carib Tasty Treats when he first opened and he mentioned that the woman who ran Spicy Island kind of regretted shutting down at the original location and actually changed her mind but at that point it was already rented out.
Jean-Talon Market 2012
Ok, I tried a macaroon at the Point G stand at JTM, it was worth the $1.85, I take back my original post.
Mirror's Best Of Montreal 2012 ...
I picked up the paper this morning to have a laugh as I do every year, it didn't disappoint. Best Greek: Arahova, Best Mexican: 3 Amigos. Enough said.
Where to eat with clients and vendors...
I smell expense account...Milos it is (as Porker and Max suggested).
Should we assume location is not an issue?
Le Gros Jambon
The hot dog and burger buns are made in house and are awesome. The burger was ok a bit too well done, tasted like a homemade burger (a good thing of course). Their hot dog (I believe they use Nathan's) would have been enjoyable had it not felt like you were biting into a stick of salt. The fries were decent but their gravy tasted like they added a ton of garlic powder.
Jean-Talon Market 2012
Where did you look for burrata? I saw it advertised out front at Qui Lait Cru on their sandwich board today.
Yup, tried to get halibut too today, nothing. I think June is when Halibut is more widely available, the guy told me last year that later in the summer they catch it "accidentally" so one day you'll see it and the next you won't.
Yah, you should have eaten the shrimp cold, I got the shelled ones a few weeks ago with eggs galore and they were fantastic I only noticed the unshelled ones today.
Local fiddleheads were also available today.
Last-Minute Itinerary Advice
Definitely skip Chez Claudette, I went there once and they took my order out of the freezer and nuked it (Shepard's Pie or Tourtiere, I can't remember).
I'm a St Viateur over Fairmont bagel person but if you try Fairmount you can grab an ice cream at Kem Coba which is literally right next door (not that St Viateur is that far away). You must try the soft serve at Kem Coba.
Jean-Talon Market 2012
I would definitely pick up some Halibut filets, Crab legs and shrimps from Atkins.
Cheese from Buckland, if he's not there on Friday go with Zachary Cloutier cheese at Hamel. Bavette or onglet from St Vincent.
Chorizo and Prosciutto (the smaller cut, I forget the Italian name right now, IIRC it's $80/kg sliced) from Cochons Tout Ronds.
Enjoy!
49th parallel coffee in Ville St-Laurent !!!!!!!!!!!! Could this be true?
Finally tried this place, excellent coffee right up there with Myriade (but a touch below). Noticed the gelato and was told it's all made from scratch (no powders are used). Will have to go back to try it.
Where is the best West African restaurant in Montreal?
The place in VSL is called Chez Khady and seems to be Senagalese based on this blog, http://lesdessousdemontreal.com/2011/03/10/dafa-nekh.
It's right next to Tache de Cafe.
Anyone been?
Where is the best West African restaurant in Montreal?
I was driving along Decarie in VSL earlier this week and noticed an African resto in the old Ma's location. I don't remember the name and I didn't notice what region they focused on. I might be in the area today and will try to get more info.
Layover Montreal
For those who haven't seen it on online or on The Travel Channel in the US back in December it will be airing tonight on Travel & Escape in Canada.

Restaurant suggestions near Trudeau airport?
I keep meaning to try Aryana ever since Sarah Musgrave reviewed it but have not had the chance. I will try to make it this weekend.
Empanada Boulengerie
Maybe I give them another try but I don't think they would have changed up their recipe since last year. IIRC the owners background is not from a traditional empanada cuisine background. That's not to say of course that one needs to be from South America to make a good empanada but it would be a start.
Chelsea Market
Made it a quick stop at CM on my recent visit. I enjoyed my visit but it was way too chaotic on Saturday afternoon, it would have been much more enjoyable at a non peak time. I didn't know what to try in the midst of the chaos and crowds and ended up having a crab club at The Lobster Place. It did the job and the crab meat was very fresh, others in the group grabbed some italian pizza from Buon Italia which also hit the spot.
Chobani yogurt - available in Montreal?
Tau carries the Skotidakis 9%. I'm pretty sure I've seen it elsewhere too, I think Mourelatos. Mourelatos of course has Skotidakis in bulk at the deli counter which is up there on the fat content.
Let's not forget how good Beurrerie du Patrimoine plain 1% yogurt is.
What's so great about Schwartz's?
"I do admit I like Coorsh smoked meat"
That explains a lot and should pretty much end the discussion.
How many people buy supermarket chicken and meat?
Tom, are you referring to baby chicks having traces of antibiotics but are then raised without them? I agree with you but at least some farmers are making the effort to raise them to slaughter without antibiotics. I posted about this last year, see thread...http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/765471
I agree with you about the farmed fish, shrimp swimming in lice infested waters in Asia and nasty Tilapia.
Jean-Talon Market 2012
I asked someone today and was told that next Monday 4/30 will be the start of the outdoor season.
Jean-Talon Market 2012
Anyone try the macaroon stand next to Olives & Epices? I'm having a hard time justifying the $1.60 for a bite size portion.
Grumman 78 Food Court @ Faubourg
4 Tacos for $20 (possibly more), hard to justify. I had the Ancho beef taco when they were outdoors in Feb during Mtl Lumiere for $6 and the beef included was minimal. Does anyone know where they source their meat from? Is it locally sourced, is that why they charged premium prices. I would think this would be advertised if that was the case.
Shallow Part of Garden
Our garden bed is on a bit of a slop so the first foot doesn't get very deep. Does anyone know of what I can plant that doesn't need roots going as deep?
Last year I had jalapenos, regular green peppers and basil up front and they all somewhat struggled to flourish. I'm thinking lettuce would be a good idea in the shallow part.
TYIA for the feedback.
Grass Fed Dairy Products Montreal
Stairsholme for pastured beef, he sets up shop in St Anne de Bellevue every Sunday, year round. Also in NDG and I think Plateau during the summer.
