Hookah Bars on LI

Been to one on Jericho Turnpike in South Huntington. BYOB. We had a great time.

huntington station area

I think you mean La Piazza.

Where to eat in or near Plainview and Massapequa, Long Island

All American on Merrick Road in Massapequa is an old fashioned burger spot, reminiscent of an original McDonald's.

Cooke's Inn closing

Just a heads up to all Huntington local foodies, Juanita Cooke is retiring again and will be closing her Cooke's Inn on June 20.

So this is the last week to get your fill of her fried chicken.

LI Strawberry festivals?

We picked up our share on Friday from the Hamlet Organic Garden in Brookhaven and were super-pleased with the strawberries. All of them had great flavor; red throughout the berry, very little white. There sizes ranged from large to small; Driscoll's Strawberries are more extra-large.

We were concerned that with all the rain that the crop would go to waste, but so far it has been very good.

Phenominal sandwich in Garden City

Unfortunately, I have to agree with MrPhil.

I read this post right before leaving to try to an Ascoli sandwich, described as "slowly roasted suckling pig with fresh mozzarella, broccoli rabe and spicy red peppers on round rustic bread."

I don't feel as though the pork was from a suckling pig (little piglet); texture and taste seemed just like roast pork to me, while suckling pig tends to be a little bit more, well, succulent? I feel like for $8.50, the sandwich could have been a tad larger, that the spicy red peppers looked like jalapenos (definitely green in color) and that while I did taste them, I probably wouldn't have remembered to mention them when describing the meal. Ultimately, this was an $8.50 roast pork pannini with fresh mozzarella and broccoli rabe.

I'd be interested in finding out what DC3 or the Seventh Street Gourmet would charge for this sandwich. I have a feeling that if it was the same price, it would definitely be a larger sandwich.

Was it good; sure. Was it great; meh?

Huntington/Northport Area

Fonda Coyoacan closed over a year ago and was replaced with El Picacho.

Johns Farms .........Plainview

Have you seen the chicken aisle? I don't think I've ever been grossed out more in my life. Chicken labeled as Perdue even though it doesn't have a Perdue sticker on it; Chicken that's labeled Grade A (by the store, no USDA stamp) with nasty blood marks on it.

Was good 20 years ago, but I wouldn't shop there again if I was paid to.

Natural on Seven Street in Garden City?

The old Food Basket had a sign installed above it recently. Rumor had it that some organic market would be opening in it's place.

GC Guy - you have any details?

Anyone?

Casual Al Fresco Dinner for 5 couples - Nassau

Sure Prime in Huntington would fit your criteria, although it is a little bit more expensive ($$$-$$$$ instead of ($$-$$$).

And the bread guy is now back at the Huntington Farmers Market:

The White Nectarines at the Orchards of Concklin were amazing this week. Best nectarine I've had in two seasons. The sour cherries are also great.

Retail Location for Satur Farms and Others

I'm not sure how many people know, but J. Kings Food Service (a commercial food distributor) has contracts with numerous Long Island, Jersey and Pennsylvania farms including Satur Farms and Catapano Dairy Farm.

They run a Farmers Market, open to the public Wednesdays through Saturdays, 9am - 2pm.

They are located in Holtsville.

Sunday morning bkfst question: Toast vs. Munday's

I'd always choose Munday's over Toast. Something about Toast is a little pretenious for my tastes; Blue Honu crowd for breakfast while Munday's feels like the locals diner.

Huntington Farmers Market

Here are some photos of the fresh blueberries and produce at this past weeks farmers market:

Huntington Farmers Market

Glad you asked. I always pick up some cider from the Orchards at Conklin and 5 of those honey sticks that they sell (5 for $1). I get the cinnamon ones which are redder in appearance than the plain honey. They're a great little alternative to candy. This week their blueberries and cherries were amazingly fresh and delicious.

The farm fresh eggs have been great for three weeks now. Also, the produce at the organic booth is amazingly fresh.

Stop by the cheese guy and pick up some of his feta. Also, if you give him a wink and a nod, he may offer up some of his raw milk cheese varieties.

Whenever I run out, I restock with Miss Amy's Preserves. Can't get anything bad here; jams, jellies, tapenades, spreads are all great.

Occasionally, we pick up some ravioli from the pasta guy or some fresh mozz.

Definitely support the farmers market, so that the vendors will keep coming and maybe even attract some new ones.

Healthy foodstuffs on Long Island

What's the story with the organic market that is supposed to be opening across from Key Food?

Huntington Farmers Market

Has anyone been going? Started two weeks ago. The new cheese guy is a welcome addition; the feta is excellent.

Glad to see that the Orchards at Conklin are back and are now selling farm fresh eggs, $2/dozen.

Wish the seafood guy from the Lynbrook Farmers Market would be added to Huntington. Otherwise, things have been busy so far. Been getting their by 9:00am and the place is hopping.

Has anyone else frequented the Huntington Farmers Market?

Long Island Local Strawberries -- any ready yet?

Friday was our first week's pickup from our CSA, the Hamlet Organic Garden in Brookhaven and we got strawberries.

Plus, on Sunday morning at the Huntington Farmer's Market, local strawberries were very available.

I'm wondering if the Mattituck Strawberry Festival will be bringing in California berries this year.

Bakery Near Melville

Reinwald's Bakery is not far from Melville; it's in Huntington on New York Avenue.

North Fork excursion - so many wineries! How to choose?

I'd like to recommend two that haven't been listed:

The Old Field
Raphael

Raphael is beautiful. They really paid attention when building the chateau. The reds are really attainable and can be enjoyed on their own or with the properly prepared meal.

The Old Field is a more homey location. It's our favorite picnic spot. Unpretentious, although their sparkling Blanc de Blanc is $40/bottle even if you buy the whole case. It's really that good.

Long Island Vineyard Wedding~ Cheap Options with Great Food?

Try the Old Field vineyard. Not some big corporation, so the fees might be a little bit more reasonable. They're the only vineyard with it's own stretch of waterfront, which is nice. Also, their sparkling white wine (champagne technique) is very, very good.

Huntington Station Farmers Market?

A little digging turned up the following information:

Charley's Farmers Market will be opening in Spring 2008 and will be run by the Mirando family who own and operate a produce distribution company in Huntington.

New Honduran in Huntington Sta.

The wife and I ate here for the first time the other night. I must say that we were very pleased with what we were served and the environment we were served in.

The restaurant is very clean and well decorated with appropriate art from Honduras. The food we were served was freshly prepared and delicious. The chips and salsa were not bagged nor jarred and came to the table freshly fried. Like sbp, we also had the Boleado which was really good.

The dish that we loved the most, the one that we will be coming back for, even if it's just for take out and the need to satisfy that seafood soup jones, was the Mariscado Sopa. In speaking with the owners, I was very pleased to hear that the clams in the seafood soup came fresh from a Long Island clammer.

I've scanned their menu and posted it on my blog, links to the menu can be found here:
