birthday dinner in St. John's Newfoundland

Chinched is my favorite spot for a fancy place. For more casual I like Piatto. Raymonds pricing is just too high. Same for Bianca's.

Coffee Roaster in ABQ

Well since I started this thread 4 years ago a lot has happened. But I can't say that it is all good. Reading thru the commentary on ABQ coffee one thing is apparent: 3rd wave coffee still has not made much of a presence in NM. What I see here are multiple reviews and comments on espresso blends. Coffee in America has moved well past this point. Excellent coffee is now generally found in single origin espressos that display the varietal characteristics of the bean. A sort of terroir for coffee. Last year we visited Iconik Coffee in SF and it is very good. It was the only decent coffee we had in NM. I realize that NM can be provincial. I live in Florida and there are only a handful of shops in this populous state that meet the 3rd wave standard. So if you're in SF check out Iconik and ask for a single origin espresso. You'll be glad you did.

No call back on that reservation?

Maybe I'm just late to the dance but lately I have not received call backs on my phone request for reservations. So I wonder is this the new standard? If the restaurant does not call me back does that mean I do not have a reservation? And if this is true then I am going to stir up a wasps nest. Basic courtesy requires us to return calls. Even if it is just to say: "I'm so sorry we can not accomodate you tonight. Please call back tomorrow and we will try to get you in. Thank you for your patronage." Am I out of touch? Or have I touched a nerve?

U of A in Tucson for 1.5 days

Time Market near the campus has excellent pizza and wine in a nice casual setting. We had a terrible experience at Cafe Poca Cosa. El Charro is always fun and tasty.

Tucson Suggestions? Looking Specifically For...

On our February trip to Tuscon we really enjoyed the pizza at Time Market near the UA campus. El Charro is always fun and authentic.

Anything Chowish between Albuquerque and Roswell (maybe via Socorro)?

We really enjoyed tamales at Frank & Lupe's El Sombrero, 210 Mesquite, Socorro, 505-835-3945 & green chile cheeseburgers at Manny's Buckhorn Tavern, 68 U.S. Highway 380, 575-835-4423, San Antonio. Ruidoso was pretty mediocre except for fantastic breakfast at Tina’s Café, 522 Sudderth, 575-257-8930.

Newcomer to St. John's

Looks like you have made a great start to finding the best that St. John's has to offer. I think the bagels at Georgetown are as good as any I had in Montreal. Piatto and Chinched are very good. I would add just a couple of spots to your list. India Gate has excellent, albeit expensive, Indian food. Beachy Cove restaurant has good fish and chips in a beautiful setting near the Bell's Island ferry.

best restaurants in Santa Fe

La Boca is outstanding. The Inn of the Anasazi and Il Piatti are very good. La Chosa has excellent New Mex. Pasqual's Cafe is very good especially for lunch. Clafoutis has excellent pastry and breakfast. In Taos we always go to Orlando's for the best New Mex in the state. Reservations are needed everywhere.

What part of town are you in? Jax is so big you have to pick your spots. Best restaurants are in the Riverside/Avondale neighborhoods: Orsay, Brick, 13 Gypsies, Biscottis, Tres Leches.

St. John's NL restaurants & Pricing

Thanks Meghann. We must be on the same page because I have already made reservations for Chinched Bistro for our visit. I think the prices at Raymonds and Atlantica are just off the charts.

St. John's NL restaurants & Pricing

We are making our annual visit to St. John's to see the family and are looking for dinner recommendations from our fellow "hounds." As Newfoundland prices have skyrocketed in recent years I tried looking at the menus of some the better restaurants and found that they now omit the prices. So if you could give me a little help I would be most appreciative.

We have been to Bianca's many times and consider it a good value if on the pricey side. Can you tell me if Raymonds and Atlantica are more expensive than Bianca's?

Are there any other spots to consider? Thanks much.

PS
IMHO, the best restaurant in St. John's is India Gate!

Amelia Island Recs

Glad you had a good time in Fernandina! Please come back and try Arte Pizza (across the street from Cafe Karibo) and Lulus. You will not be disappointed!

Best New Mexico Restaurant Not in ABQ or Santa Fe?

Orlandos in Taos.

Must eat on Amelia Island?

You are on the right track. I think Lulu's is the best restaurant on the island for lunch or dinner. Arte Pizza on N. 3rd has the best Italian style pizza I have had in the USA. Arte is open for lunch on weekends, dinner Wednesday - Monday.

Fernandina Beach/AI Update?

You are on the right track with all your picks. I continue to believe that Lulu's is the best restaurant on the island. Arte is excellent. We dined very well at Merge this past week. New burger place called Tasty's at the corner of 8th and Atlantic is very good, very casual. For southern food I like the Marina, try the flounder.

There are many problems with 29 but it call comes down to inconsistency in food quality and service. And the patio is gross. They seem to be incapable of cleaning it. Rumor has it that Chef Scotty has moved to JAX to open a new restaurant.

I hear good things about Horizon. Check out Jacksonville/Fernandina Beach on Urbanspoon for lots of good info. Enjoy your visit! And avoid Jack and Diane's and the Beach Club at all costs!

Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach

For casual you can't beat Arte Pizza on N. 3rd. Excellent pizza and pasta. Espana is very good for Spanish/Portuguese fish dishes. Merge is outstanding. They have a seasonal menu and a great wine list.

Is there anything decent in Amelia Island??

Best restaurant on the island right now is still Lulu's on S. 7th. Nice but not fancy interior, if that is important to you. The daily specials are very, very good. Excellent local fish. Arte has excellent Neopolitan style pizza in a casual family setting on N. 3rd. Tasty's is a nice new addition for casual hamburgers.

St. Augustine FL faves?

My general experience in NE FLA is that if you can see the water then the food will be mediocre.

Tell me abut Lulu's....lunch or dinner?

Lulu's has indoor and outdoor seating. Heaters are available for the exterior. A little more about the food: Lunch usually follows the online menu with excellent sandwiches and creative salads. The Po'boys are very well liked. Dinner continues the lunch menu and adds daily specials based on what Chef Brian can get locally. The seafood is especially good. Brian is very flexible and willing to help you get what you want (within reason of course.) Enjoy your visit!

Tell me abut Lulu's....lunch or dinner?

LuLu's may be the best restaurant on the island. I would recommend a lunch and a dinner. You can certainly get TRay's to go but no beer. There is a new burger place at Centre and 8th called Tasty's Burgers and Fries which is pretty, well tasty. They have craft beers and interesting fries to go with excellent burgers. I agree with you about Salt. Le Clos, Espana and Merge are very, very good. 29 South has been getting mixed reviews. As you know Arte and Moon River are two different things. Tonino at Arte has been offering some interesting specials. Bon Apetit!
