rehearsal dinner - Salento or Porcini
Are you set on Italian? If not, Estia could be very nice. I've heard good things about Bistrot La Minette, which has a private room for 20 and is BYOB, but I'm not sure if 6th Street is too far for you.
30th Birthday Party - Private Room at a Bar
You don't say how many people it's going to be, or what neighborhood (or suburb) you want. There are lots of bars with private rooms in Center City. Black Sheep, Dark Horse, Moriarty's, the new place in Headhouse Square are just a few. I think Pub and Kitchen has a private room too. It wouldn't be an ipod, but you could pick 80s to sing in a private karaoke room at Yakitori Boy or Fuji Mountain.
NYC girl looking for food in Columbus, Ohio.....help!!!
True, Basi wouldn't stand up as an Italian restaurant, but the fact that it's off an alley with a garden is as close to a NYC experience as one can get in Columbus.
I have never had a veggie burger anywhere as good as the one at Northstar. If it were in NYC, I would go across boroughs for it. Pistacia Vera would be a fantastic neighborhood bakery in nyc. It's not a fancy French bakery, but sometimes you want a huge cake for under $60, and sometimes you want cookies that cost $1 instead of $4.
I guess I'm glad I'm not vegan if Dragonfly is as good as it gets!

Making my first food-centric trip to Philly. Thoughts/Suggestions appreciated.
Capogiro doesn't even begin to compare with Jeni's. Not terrible, but nothing special.
Garces' places are all good. Amada is my favorite. Another standard choice is Monk's for mussels (and frites). Cbus is pretty weak on Mexican, so maybe Distrito or Lolita (BYOT) or one of the more downscale places on Washington? I guess pho is mostly out if you don't eat beef.
Zahav would be different, and excellent.
NYC girl looking for food in Columbus, Ohio.....help!!!
Well, Columbus is not NYC, but it could be a lot worse.
Things that are as good (or maybe better) than in nyc:
Jeni's ice cream: lime cardamom yogurt, wildberry lavender, lemon blueberry yogurt, creme fraiche w/amarena cherries...
Pistacia Vera: lovely cakes for parties, dollar cookies, macaroons, even had yuzu mousse
Northstar: best veggie burger anywhere (I'm not vegetarian), chocolate truffle cookie. Sweet potato hash for brunch. Yummy peanut slaw is only available at the Clintonville location. Prices keep going up, but still cheaper than nyc.
Kihachi: good sushi, but great small dishes, very authentic, and WAY cheaper than nyc.
Places that would be solid neighborhood standbys in nyc:
Basi Italia, esp the outdoor seating. Very NY, hidden in an alley.
North Market
Tensuke market: homemade green tea ice cream, takeout sushi
Betty's/Surly Girl/Tip Top/etc with decent inexpensive food and beer.
maybe G Michael's, Tasi, Zen Cha for tea (and brunch)
Places that are sometimes rated as great in Columbus, but if they were nyc, I wouldn't bother:
Alana's, Barcelona, Katzinger, Dragonfly, Spagio. Of those, even in cbus, I wouldn't bother with any besides Alana's.
If you get desperate to explore:
South Indian: Udipi, Dosa Hut, etc
Somali restaurants, like Darbo
Mexican, west near 161
Vietnamese places north
Cambodian-Mexican place whose name I forget (not that great, but it's fun to say you went). Ditto for average Indonesian.
BTW, bread is disappointing. Rigsby's/Tasi sells some (the bakery in north market undersalts, and gets stale after half a day). Parbaked La Brea from Kroger's is a good alternative.

Looking for safe dinner for 8 in Pittsburgh
I didn't mention it because it's become just a dinner out. But if there is some place Thanksgiving-appropriate, that could tip things in its favor. And location is totally flexible since several people will be driving anyway.
Looking for safe dinner for 8 in Pittsburgh
I'd prefer to avoid a chain. I should also mention that this is a replacement for a Thanksgiving meal (since people are not arriving till Friday and for various reasons, the traditional home-cooked meal on Saturday was cancelled), so if there is some place that serves a quasi-Thanksgiving Dinner that Saturday, that would be perfect, though not necessary.
Italian could be fine. Maybe Mexican or Spanish would be okay too, I'm not sure. Tessaro's sounds like a place I'd hit on my own. As for the pubs, do any of them smell of stale beer? Since half the people don't drink, I'm not so keen on them, though I personally could certainly use the alcohol. They sound like some of the best options so far, though.
Looking for safe dinner for 8 in Pittsburgh
I'm looking for a restaurant in Pittsburgh for 8 people Saturday night during Thanksgiving weekend. Something safe and somewhat inexpensive (preferably
Your fave ice cream flavors from the Mtl ice cream shops
The pineapple-basil at point g.
Store-bought lime sherbet
Sometimes you crave "food" that reminds you of your childhood, like store-bought lime sherbet, the kind that is usually bright green and artificially-flavored. Does anybody know where to buy some? Resorting to digging the lime out of rainbow sherbet isn't good enough...
Surviving Columbus after Manhattan
thanks for the recs. i've been to most, but still haven't been to nancy's (strange hours), creole kitchen, or any of the somali places yet. what does mrnyc mean by appalachian places? sounds interesting. i forgot to mention the excellent fresh green tea ice cream at tensuke and basi italia, esp when their patio is open.
i wouldn't say that there's a "plethora of really good ethnic joints", more like a handful of decent ones. thank goodness they exist, of course. it's not hard to survive eating in columbus - but are there places/foods that make it really fun?
to answer boyomom, some things i miss most:
delivery!
fresh bread, prosciutto di parma, etc from the corner store
constantly researching and trying new places
lots of people interested in food (e.g. hundreds of postings a day on chowhound)
outdoor dining in summer (wide sidewalks, great people-watching)
dinner at 9, with the restaurant busier when we leave than when we arrived.
food places: fairway, h&h, donut plant, chelsea market, places hidden behind curtains (burger joint, dessert studio), max cafe, expeditions to queens (sripaphai, spicy & tasty), restaurant week (esp gramercy tavern), realizing you're hungry & walking over to the closest ethnic neighborhood (nha trang in chinatown, chennai garden in curry hill, han bat in koreatown), decent sushi all over, lots more.
Surviving Columbus after Manhattan
I was recently reading a thread "Can I survive a move from Manhattan to Pittsburgh?" The poster asked for advice how to survive post-Fairway, Zabar's, etc. So, what answer do you have for Columbus? I don't think we have anything in the high-end that can compete, but how about some really tasty unique eats? Places where you'd take your snotty nyc guests to show off (or at least defend with)?
I take people to Jeni's Ice Cream, Pistachio, North Star for the veggie burger. (And life would be difficult without North Market and Trader Joe's.) I'm looking for more standouts, not just places that are perfectly okay, even good or very good.
cafes near mont-royal
Does anybody have recommendations for cafes where I can work, read, etc, near the Mont-Royal metro stop? And are they good during the day, in the evening, or both?
Bagels in Columbus?
Are there good (or decent) bagels to be found in Columbus? Not Katzinger's, or one of the big chewy kinds with a soft crust. I'm not asking for H&H. Some place like Bruegger's would make me happy. Thanks!
Brunch in Columbus, OH
Lindey's has a good brunch. You can also order off their full lunch menu. Northstar is good for a big weekday breakfast, or, even better, lunch or a simple dinner (the most amazing veggie burger anywhere!), but it's too crowded on weekends.
