a little help for watermelon

Puree it with sugar and lime and make popsicles.

A Trader Joe's Care Package

Oh, and the cinnamon almonds. I actually can't stop eating them so I don't buy them any more, but I'd happily buy them for someone else.

A Trader Joe's Care Package

I like the Almondictive Bits too, but (this week) I prefer the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups. Also some big tub o'cookies (the chocolate chip with oatmeal ones work for me), and the peanut butter-filled pretzels.

Staying at the Doubletree Portland (downtown)- any breakfast recs?

I'm kind of wondering if you made a reservation at the Doubletree in Portland, Oregon--that appears to be downtown. As for whole wheat pancakes in Portland, Maine, I highly recommend The Good Egg on Middle Street.

Pear Cider , Perry Suggestions

Trader Joe's has one--I think it's called Sir Perry (I'm not sure if that's a real brand or a TJ label). Pretty good, I thought--a little bit sweeter than cider but not overly so.

Picky in Portland

Silly's is a possibility--extremely varied menu, lots of veggie options, fun atmosphere, cheap. Hot Suppa's dinner menu is basically cajun and meat-heavy, but they do have good falafel and a fried green tomato BLT (as well as salads.) But even if you think you want meat, give the Green Elephant a look--it is an outstanding Asian-influenced vegetarian restaurant, but all kinds of omnivores love it.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012

The dark-chocolate-covered raisins are my new favorite dark chocolate delivery system, but the peanut butter cups are my standby.

My Daughter's School Assignment: Dinner for 4 @ $4

I think lamb was pretty cheap too, hard as that may be to believe. My mother told me they ate lamb chops endlessly, and she only had one skirt to wear to school.

Recommendations for Somalian restaurants in Maine?

I've heard good things about Al Huda on Forest Ave, but haven't managed to convince the kids yet:

In Portland next week with our four legged friend...

Good lunch spots with outdoor seating include Duckfat, the Port Hole, and the Thirsty Pig. I don't know if the outdoor tables will be open this early in the season, though.

Hidden Jewel, close to 95 Northern Ma?

I was going to say Flatbread in Amesbury too! It's where we always stop on the drive from Portland to Northampton, lest we end up hungry on Rt 2, a fate worse than death.

Adults that have been "sheltered" from cooking?

Yeah, that's my dad too. My mom had Alzheimer's (she died recently), so for the past few years he's had to step it up a bit. He started going with her to the grocery store (because she got lost once coming home), so they would do things like buy a pound of hamburger, then call me to ask how to make it into hamburgers. He really had no idea, and she forgot. Another time they bought a box because it had a picture of a cake on it, and were dismayed to get home and discover that you had to BAKE it to get a cake. She had an excuse—her brain was deteriorating—but he honestly had no clue what a cake mix was.

Now he lives alone in a retirement community where they have dinner in a dining hall, but he has to do his own breakfast (he can handle that) and lunch. I bring him a lot of frozen stuff from Trader Joe’s.

Dinner for About 30 In Portland?

The upstairs at RiRa is very nice, great views, pretty good food. Pepperclub also has a back room and an interesting, varied menu.

Reheating a Chocolate Croissant

If you have a Trader Joe's nearby, try their frozen ones. Proof overnight and bake in the am--at least as good as day-old bakery croissants.

Trader Joe's - New Products You Want To See There

Wouldn't it be great if they could replicate Girl Scout cookies, but without the palm oil and other crap? Imagine, Thin Mints in the freezer all year long.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 1st quarter 2012 [old]

oh wow. I'm rooting for dark chocolate too.

takeout in or near Brunswick?

Good idea! We went there once this summer. Thanks.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 1st quarter 2012 [old]

Are these seasonal? And where in the store are they--over by the chocolate-covered nuts or somewhere else? I've looked but couldn't find them.

takeout in or near Brunswick?

My dad in Brunswick is immobilized with bursitis, and we'd like to bring him dinner this weekend. Unfortunately, he has the palate of a 6-year-old (as does my 6-year-old), so Indian and Mexican are out. There's that new BBQ place, but the reviews I've read have not been encouraging. Is there anything else good (Thai, maybe?), or should we just go to Whaddapita and drive like hell?

Portland NYE?

Oh, and Local Sprouts, too.

Portland NYE?

I have a third-grader, and looking at Portland Food Map’s list of what’s open on NYE, the most plausible for me would be Paciarino and Pai Men Miyake. Not fancy, the food is kid-friendly and excellent, and I assume you aren’t talking about midnight anyhow.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 4th quarter 2011 [OLD]

I agree, but I still can't put my finger on why going to TJ's is a treat and going to the regular grocery store is a chore. I will willingly go to TJ's at 8pm, but the other store? Never. And why I will buy things at TJ's that I would never look twice at in the other store--like frozen pie dough. I bought it and actually MADE a chicken pot pie.

I think it has something to do with the promise of all those dark-chocolate-covered things. I never get out without one, and I sometimes think my trips to TJ's are just a search for the perfect dark chocolate delivery system.

Private party space in/near Portland?

The back room at Pepperclub is a possibility, but 30 is probably their limit. I have also been to a private party in the upstairs at RiRa with a good buffet and full bar. Nice view, too.

Brownie question--bakers please help

That's very helpful! Thanks!

Brownie question--bakers please help

So I promised to make my tried-and-true iced brownies for yet another school bake sale tomorrow. The recipe calls for 4 oz of unsweetened chocolate and 2c sugar. I have absolutely no time to go to the store tonight, but I checked my supplies and discovered that I have 3 oz of unsweetened (how that happened I have no idea) and a full box of semisweet. If I throw in 1 oz of semisweet, how much should I cut the sugar? A half-cup? I like them not over-sweet, but then again I'm not eating them. Thanks.

Your "Get Well" Chicken Soup

Chicken broth, ginger, lime, jalapeno, carrots, noodles. Cures what ails ya.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 4th quarter 2011 [OLD]

Frozen. They make a good little appetizer or a great dinner for a little kid.

restaurant with a private room in Metrowest?

Both look good--thanks so much.

restaurant with a private room in Metrowest?

I'm looking for a space for an informal memorial service in the Natick/Wellesley area (maybe Framingham, but no farther west.) Maybe someplace that would do a buffet? Would that have to be a hotel? Thanks.

Help for Portland lunch on Thanksgiving

I was just at the Miss Portland Diner, and they say they'll be open at 7am on Thanksgiving Day. You could do much worse for a bite to tide you over.
