Champaign-Urbana Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese

What's the best sushi in town - and what are my other non-Chinese Asian dining options? TIA!

Practically Begging: Is there anything good within driving range of Boca Raton?

It's been a couple of years since I've been there, but Sublime was excellent on several visits. It's on the northern end of Ft. Lauderdale and a very manageable drive from Boca.

Cleveland - Anything East Asian?

Thanks folks. What do you think of Pacific East?

Cleveland - Anything East Asian?

I'm running the Cleveland Marathon May 16 - it'll be my first.

Need recommendations for a pre-race dinner. I'm allergic to wheat, yeast and dairy, so any rice-based East Asian cuisine is ideal. Not too spicy before the race. :) [EDIT: But as long as I can order something toned down, my "fan club" wouldn't mind spicy at all.]

Sushi, pad thai, something else with plenty o' carbs and some good protein?

Downtown preferred, but I'm okay with driving a bit from my hotel.

Do all farmers markets in Florida stink?

Well, I'll be danged.

I read about a new farm in Oak Hill that sells at the New Smyrna Beach farmers' market (Green Flamingo Farms), so I decided to give the market another try. What a change in the last year! Plentiful locally grown pesticide-free vegetables from several farmers, local grass-fed beef, local seafood from the Oak Hill co-op, enough producers with local eggs that you don't have to get there before 7:45 to get any. Plus an organic baker and the usual collection of crafts and processed foods. Saturday mornings on Canal St. Yeah!

New Smyrna Beach Restaurants

Also, what's going on with the former Mi Mexico? I heard there are new owners, they appear to be remodeling. Anyone heard anything?

New Smyrna Beach Restaurants

El Palenque. We ate there the other night. Unremarkable, fairly priced, decent Mexican, full bar, and the place was full on a Wednesday night. I would go back. But if the reason Romesco's closed was because they couldn't come to an agreement on the lease (which I heard from at least three different sources), I can't imagine how El Palenque will be able to pay a higher rent than Romesco's was paying.

Looking for Good Chinese Resturant in Boca Raton

+1 on Uncle Tai's. As close to my mom's cooking as I've ever had in a restaurant (and she teaches Chinese cooking).

Looking for great Jamaican Beef Patties near Daytona/Orlando

There used to be a Jamaican restaurant in the strip mall at Mason & Nova, AFAIK it's still there. Just a little hole in the wall but the food was pretty good. I don't know if they had beef patties though.

Do all farmers markets in Florida stink?

Are you talking about the Daytona Flea & Farmers' Market, or the Volusia County market Wednesday mornings at the fairgrounds? I've never been to the latter.

Also, what about the downtown Deland market on Saturdays? Anyone been there?

Gourmet grocery - Orlando ??

We were able to find tradizionale balsamic vinegar at Bull Fish in Winter Park. They're an odd combination - a doggie boutique with a small wine selection, a decent stock of Riedel stemware and decanters, and "gourmet" oils, vinegars and sauces in the back.

Does Il Paradiso carry decent balsamico, as well?

New Smyrna Breakfast and Lunch

What kind of breakfast? For your traditional greasy spoon, there's the Golden Biscuit behind East Canal Street (eggs Florentine, mmmm) or Ruthy's (the former Biscuits & Gravy) on West Canal. I doubt you'll find much open on Christmas Day, though I'm not 100% sure of that. Around here the grocery stores close at 9 or 10 pm on a normal non-holiday, and on the holidays the place locks up tighter than Uncle Scrooge's purse strings. 7-11 is about it when we've needed something on past holidays.

No help here for lunch. I think some of the places that have been recommended on this board for dinner are also open for lunch, but not sure as I almost never go out to lunch. NSB Steakhouse is open for lunch as is the Riverview, although neither is on my list of favorites. Scott's Bluewater and the Spanish River Grille are not open for lunch.

Pittsburgh, fine dining, jeans?

We're coming to Pittsburgh for the Springsteen concert next week. I'm perusing restaurant choices from this board. Can we eat at Nine on Nine, Kaya, Eleven or Lidia's without having to change clothes?

Looking for restaurant in Cols OH

Well, now I have to try Black Creek Bistro.

Another restaurant that features local food is Latitude 41 in the Renaissance Hotel (I think it's the Renaissance) downtown. We ate there a couple of weeks ago, had the tasting menu and the food was really, really good. Really surprising for a hotel restaurant.

The wine pairings unfortunately were just OK (acceptable, but not great), which was probably explained by the fact that our server - who chose the wines - reeked of cigarette smoke. How she could taste anything at all is beyond me.

Sushi in Columbus, OH?

25 years ago when I was in school, the "Japanese Oriental Restaurant" in the house on High St. had a limited Japanese menu and no sushi. The menu was mostly Korean and the place was owned and run by a Korean family. Haven't been there in ages - but they definitely had no sushi until well after Honda moved in.

Haiku is just O.K. There's an Asian fusion place just east of the Drexel East, also, that's just O.K. (on a par with Haiku near the Drexel Grandview). We usually eat at Hama, only because it's convenient to our eastside commute, but I agree they're not as good as they used to be.

Daytona report and wish list (long)

Chase's isn't really a place for young children anyhow. It's more of a party place with much more emphasis on the bar than the restaurant. The pool is strictly for bikini-clad twentysomethings. The food is just okay - acceptable, but no better than it needs to be in a place where you can eat right on the beach. Whenever they have live music we can hear it from our house two and a half blocks away, over the ocean's roar (thankfully not loud enough to be annoying from here, but you get the picture). Honestly since I don't have kids, I couldn't tell you a good place in NSB to bring them. Probably Boston's or Teddy's, possibly the Sea Harvest. Or the best option for any age - get takeout from Ocean's and make your own beach picnic.

Review: Luma - Winter Park

I ate at Luma on Park for the first time last night on the recommendation of this board. All in all a pretty good meal, though it started a bit rough.

310 and PPG were mobbed even early on a Sunday night. I was a little apprehensive about the fact that there were many empty tables at Luma, but at the same time, had no interest in eating somewhere super-crowded.

We decided to begin with individual salads and then share small plates. Against my usual practice, I did not order my salad dressing on the side. Big mistake! Both my arugula and fennel salad and my partner's hearts of romaine were WAY overdressed.

Our snapper ceviche arrived soon after I'd finished my salad. The server didn't bring us dinner forks and didn't clear my salad plate (my partner's had already been bussed). Maybe he thought I still wanted to drink the 3 tbsp of dressing remaining in the plate. Fortunately the place wasn't busy, so we swiped clean forks off the next table.

After that, everything else was fine. Four small plates were enough to satisfy, not stuff, the two of us. The snapper ceviche and tuna carpaccio were good, prawns and mussels in coconut milk were delicious, and the pasta with mushrooms was heavenly. We still had room to share a dessert. The blood orange "sabayon tart" was more like a light cheesecake than sabayon, but still good.

The wine list is adequate - neither an attraction nor a significant weakness IMO.

FYI if anyone goes to their website [ http://www.lumaonpark.com/home.html ], (1) it's loaded with annoying flash animations and slideshows, and (2) the .pdf menu is fairly representative but not current. Happily (although we forewent the entree menu and the Sunday prix fixe anyhow), most of the fish entrees on last night's menu were not "pork-ified" as are the entrees on the download menu.

I would definitely go back, though we don't get to Orlando often and will probably try some other places first.

Help i am in Daytona beach

You misunderstood - Rain is more expensive by 1/2 than restaurants equally good in the area. Baleen is both expensive and bad.

Help i am in Daytona beach

Tarafuku at Clyde Morris & Beville has decent sushi and a limited non-sushi menu. The Indian place on A1A is not bad. Martini's on Bay St. and its sister restaurant, Chops on US1, are both good; the Chart House is a little overpriced but worth a visit on Sundays when most everything else is closed. Songkran, the Thai restaurant south on US1, has an extensive vegetarian menu as well as seafood and meat options - short on ambience, but the food's decent. Avoid Baleen like the plague. Like Baleen, Rain is SERIOUSLY overpriced for the area and I avoid it for that reason only, but the one time I ate there the food was pretty good.

New Smyrna Beach Restaurants

amendment: You can do fairly well ordering off the appetizer menu at Norwood's. I'd recommend the house smoked trout with capers and onions, and the blue crab salad. The gumbo is also very good, though sometimes a bit salty.

New Smyrna Beach Restaurants

+1 on the Spanish River Grille. So far I've eaten at Shiki twice and Dolce Vita only once, both have been very good.

Pass on Norwood's for dinner - great wine, bad food.

The Garlic is worth going to mainly for their early bird (qua late lunch) buffet (4:00 - 5:30 pm). A great deal - AYCE of two or three roasted veggies, a variety of pasta with and without meats or seafood, a salad, roasted garlic, bread and a glass of wine or beer, $12.95 I think. The Garlic's regular menu is not bad, but overpriced for the quality - long on ambience, food needs work. Don't let the waiter mash your roasted garlic, or you'll have a heck of a time separating the good stuff from the skin.

Also highly rated: Bello Valentino's, next to the tittie bar on U.S. 1. For years I was afraid of what kind of food one might get at that location, but it's really excellent.

Also: Scott's Bluewater Grille, in the same plaza as Shiki. Limited menu, plus monthly specials.

Tarafuku at Clyde Morris & Beville has decent sushi, also.
