Help! Where can I find "Il Miracolo di San Gennaro" tomatoes in LA/OC/LB?

I just saw this, I know it's a bit late. In the future, we have them at Cube on La Brea. $13 a can and 10% off the case. :D rachael

Best place for election night coverage?

I heard that Canele in Atwater Village was having an election night three course menu for $22 and that they were putting out TVs to watch the coverage.

Fermented garlic cloves?

Hi there!

I'm pretty sure that the "fermented garlic" you're referring to is the same as Koren Black Garlic. It can also be called 40 Day Fermented Garlic. I've actually started selling it at my store and we've been trying it out on all sorts of things. I think it's nice just smashed onto crostini or along side roast chicken. Please report back with how you used it. Here's a link that might help as well:

Jamon Iberico at Surfas

Hi all. This is Rachael from Cube. We do have Paleta Iberico Bellota. That's the shoulder, not the leg. We actually go it in right before Christmas.

The Iberico Bellota Ham (leg) comes in July 08, the Choizo Iberico Bellota is in soon. We hope.

It is expensive. But to be honest, it's also very rich. I few slices will do you.

Hope this helps. . .

Yeah. I was the same way. It's just a bummer, i want it to be good! Maybe I'll try and go back after the first of the year. I really did feel their heart was in the right place, it just sorta missed the mark.

Larkins in Eagle Rock

I went to Larkin’s in Eagle Rock Saturday night. I’ve talked to a few people; word on the street was that service could be slow so I was prepared for that. And honestly, slow service doesn’t really bother me. I’m with friends, we’ll chat. It’s a new place, I get it.

This is really a cozy little space, a beautiful old California bungalow that’s been totally transformed. Cute mix & match chairs and old doors turned into table tops; lots of flowers, lots of charm, a nice hostess at the door greeting guests. I also saw picnic tables on the wrap around porch. We were seated within 5 minutes and the restaurant was full. I was prepared to make this my new favorite place.

We were immediately given a black bean relish (poor man’s caviar, I think) with what I assume were pita chips. Really not enough chips for 3 people, but the relish was good and I ate some with my fork. We waited for at least 10 minutes for our waitress. We figured out what we wanted and I read the “welcome & rules” from the owner. Now, I’m all for no cell phone use in restaurants. When patrons start pointing and miming because they’re on their cell my blood pressure sky rockets. Asking patrons not to be rude to the wait staff, more than ok. Telling them not to make adjustments to the menu, hey—it’s your place. But as I watched a manager berate my soon to be waitress, loudly enough for all to hear, I couldn’t help but feel that he should read Chef Larkin’s rules.

Our waitress came, she was sweet and nice and slightly dissholved. I get it. You just got blasted in front of the restaurant. We ordered the fried chicken, the spicy shrimp and the pork chop. I got lemonade and my sister got the fruit punch. As we ordered a buss boy came and stole the empty chip basket and almost half a dish of the black bean relish. He actually made our waitress move as he grabbed the plates—right as she was mid sentence asking us questions. The food came fast. For $15 I was treated to a small scoop of garlic mashed potatoes and gravy, 1 chicken leg and a very small chicken thigh. For $20 my bf got 8 tiny shrimp and potato salad. My sister got the pork chop (they asked us if we wanted it medium rare, shouldn’t pork always be between 150-160 degrees??) with beans and rice. I’d say she got the most bang for her buck. It was a nice size boneless pork chop, a little salty, but good. My fried chicken was just average and while it had a crispy coating, the skin was not crispy; it was actually a little slimy. How does that happen? I feel like it was almost baked and then fried at the end. I can’t have shellfish, so I can’t comment on the shrimp but my bf liked them ok. Nothing to blow your hair back.

For dessert I had banana pudding, sister got the black & blue cobbler and the bf had the sweet potato pie. The banana pudding was average and had actually separated, but I ate it anyway because I was still hungry after my 2-piece meal. The cobbler was awful. And not really cobbler, more of a crisp. There was too much salt and some bites were disgusting. The sweet potato pie was really sweet and then topped with more sweetened fresh whipped cream. I would have preferred unsweetened to cut it a bit.

All in all, we were pretty under whelmed by the experience. Honestly, I can’t say I’d go back. Maybe in a few months if they have things worked out. I felt it was a bit too expensive for what it was. And when you have a place like Café Beaujolais down the street, why not just go there? It's really a bummer because the place is so darn cute.

I’m interested to hear what others have thought. . .

I think you should give it anouther whirl. Buy a hand made jam (the chef makes his own pectin from Apple Seeds) and try the quiche.

Homemade Grape Juice

I bought a 20# case of Concord Grapes today from the Farmer's Market. I'm wanting to make my mom's grape juice:

1 cup of grapes
1cup to 1/2 cup sugar (depending on sweetness of the grapes)
placed in a 1/2 gallon canning jar
filled with spring water
topped with a hot canning lid and ring
boiled for 20 minutes
Let sit for 2 months before drinking
Strain Grapes out of Juice before serving.

This recipe seems too simple to be true. I remember my mom's Grape Juice as being out of this world but, out of curiousity, does anyone have any other recipes?

Thanks!!

Gourmet Markets

I'm driving up to SF from LA this weekend. All set to visit the SF Farmer's Market, eat at Zuni and with friends at Perbacco.

I'm wanting to do a little gourmet market tour. Anything specializing in Italian and/or cheese. Anything i shouldn't miss? Staying near the SF Farmer's Market--willing to drive, prefer to walk.

Best coffee beans in Los Angeles

agreed best coffee! I love going to the SF Famer's Market and getting a cup from them. Last time we went we bought 6 bags.

Auntie Em's cupcakes are overrated

Wha-wha-what? I love Auntie Em's. I've always had great food there and I've never had the experience of a dry cup cake. I'd suggest giving them another try. In my opinion they're tops--much better than Sprinkles or the like. Maybe it was an off day. What does that mean, "Auntie Em got what she deserved in the Throwdown with Bobby Flay, the loser title."

Cheese Suppliers -- Local Restaurants?

Cowgirl Creamery/Tomales Bay. I think the Beverly Hills Cheese Shop also supplies to local restaurants. I don't know if these companies (or any company for that matter) provides cheese plate service. They don't make the plates. But I suppose they help smaller places with their selection. I think most chefs perfer to choose their own stuff though.

Authentic Full Fat Buttermilk?

There is a raw milk vendor at the Santa Monica farmer's market--you could ask them to bring you some.

Ditto on Galco's. They are so nice, if they don't have it, I'll bet they'll want it and try to find it. Keep us posted if you find it!

Savoury Chocolate Appetizer Ideas

I love chocolate mixed with rosemary. The buttery/herbiness of the rosemary balances a really good dark chocolate. I made chocolate rosemary brownies and they turned out good. What about a chocolate rosemary fondue with vegetables? Like zucchini?

Am I overreacting about a birthday dinner slipup?

As someone who runs a restaurant, I agree that you should write the owner. I would definatly want to know if something like that happened. We get so excited when people call us and tell us it's their anniversary or birthday and that they've chosen us to celebrate with. I'd be mortified if I were that restaurant owner to find out your experience. I wouldn't walk into it expecting to get anything free in return, just a sincere apology. That way when he does give you a free meal (which he should!!) you can be pleasantly suprised. I thought you handled this well. I'm the same way, I often feel had I been more forceful in situations people whould have responded the way I expected them to--but being "forceful" just isn't in my nature. I won't change my behavior when other aren't acting the way they should. I'm glad you didn't get pissed--you'd probably be feeling worse because you did.

Where to take a London food-blogger?

We were running late (she was taking pictures of our store) so we walked over to Mozza. Walked in and got a seat at the bar at about 7:30. I have good luck with that. We got the English Pea and Ramp Pizzette. I liked the crust on that better than a large pizza. It was really good. Also got the caramel dessert which was out of this world. I also took her to the Little Next Door and she flipped out. It's beautiful there. We'll probably head back to get some jam. Hopefully they'll let her snap some pictures.

Where to take a London food-blogger?

Hello all!

My friend, a london-based food blogger is coming into town and we're taking her to dinner tomorrow. Last time she was in town I took her to Lucques, got her the cookbook--she was thrilled. Where should I take her? Someplace fun, pretty, (obviously yummy chow). A place that would let her snap a few photos would be a bonus.

I was leaning toward Hatfields but someone said Nook is good. Any of you food bloggers out there have any suggestions?

Oh-if this helps: www.nordljus.co.uk is her blog. She's into desserts so that would also be a plus!

thanks!
