Best store/bar to buy/sample microbrew beers

Ginger Man downtown has loads of local taps. Whip In liquor store also sells draft beer in pints and growlers. B.B. Rovers has hundreds of beers, albeit most in bottles. Dig Pub in Cedar Park also has an extensive menu: http://www.thedigpub.com/Pages/Beer_Menu.pdf

Fajita Recipe

Here's another vote for H-E-B premarinated, but marinade additionally over night with a can of chipotles (smashed up) in abodo. The heat really seems to tenderize the tough meat, not to mention add more flavor.

Achiote paste - recado rojo

Central Market has it, too.

The new (to me) Opie's

Thanks so much, mkwng.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the *lettuce garnish* and French fries with that heavily sauced slab of ribs. If you're correct, and I'm sure you are, anybody going expecting something like the photos is going to be in for quite a surprise.

The new (to me) Opie's

OK, so I haven't been to Opie's barbecue in Spicewood since well before they moved. And now I'm really confused by this photo:

http://opiesbarbecue.lbu.com/aboutus.html

It shows tablecloths, silver and china — and a sauce much thicker than the old Opie's/Cooper's thin stuff.

I'm contemplating going there tomorrow but if it's radically changed I might not. If I want tablecloth barbecue I'll just go to County Line. Or am I just really confused?

Thanks to all.

Brooklyn Pie Company?

It's OK but: The first time we went there they screwed up our order and it happened maybe four or five subsequent times. Once I picked up a pizza and was home eating it when they called the house and asked if I was coming to get it. The last time, a Saturday, we went for slices for lunch with a tight time frame because of a function at Anderson HS at which we were due back. Waited 45 minutes for two slices. My younger kid ate so fast he puked. Obv., that's not their fault but it is their fault that can't complete a simple order. I gave them too many chances. After that last vomity debacle I sent an e-mail detailing our consistently less-than ideal experiences. I never heard back, which tells me everything I
need to know. So Brooklyn Pie is officially dead to me. If you order from them, be prepared to take the day off waiting.

ACL food options

You simply can't leave ACL without trying the hot and crunchy chicken cone from Hudson's. It is, as they say, the only time you can eat at Hudson's for seven bucks. El Chilito is there for the first time and they're supposed to be having cochinita pibil, one of my favorites. Have fun.

Guanciale in Austin

Thanks, all. I'll check out Fiesta and CM. NirvRush, I believe it's guan (as in "Guantanamo)-chee-AA-lee. But it's been too long since I was pressed to speak much Italian.

Guanciale in Austin

Thanks for the kind offer, Rudeboy. I'll see if I can't scope out the right guy at Mandola's. It's listed as available on their board, or at least was last week. Meanwhile: Mmm...fat...

Guanciale in Austin

One of the posts about Primizie reminded me — I,too, am on a quest for guanciale to make bucatini all'amatriciana. I heard Mandola's had it, went, was told them were temporarily out and had to settle for pancetta. The next time I went, I was told they couldn't get it any more. Any word from the Hounds on whether they'll ever have it again or if I can get it somewhere else in Austin? Thanks.

Mirabelle recommendation

They have a lightly smoked and grilled pork chop I have a hard time staying away from. A cup of their incredibly rich duck and sausage gumbo is a great way to start.

BBQ-THE REAL DEAL?

Twill speaks the truth. You must go to Lockhart, specifically Kreuz Market. No sauce, no plates, no forks but great brisket, sausage, spare ribs, chops and more. Minimal sides. In town, if you want ribs I'd recommend Iron Works on Cesar Chavez a few blocks south of Sixth St. County Line also quite good but definitely less rustic than Kreuz/IW. Enjoy.
