Dinner for a large group in University City at a place with a good vibe?

Thanks! This is all very helpful, especially since I'll be in town for several days with smaller dinners to plan as well.

Dinner for a large group in University City at a place with a good vibe?

Hi, all. Every year, I plan a dinner for a large group (50-60 people) who are visiting Philadelphia to attend a radio convention that's centered around WXPN. We're looking primarily for good food and service, innovative and hip (but not over the top), and middle price range. It has to be a place with a bar. Most people attending won't have a car, so we try to stay within reasonable walking distance and on the west side of the river (though I could probably convince the group to cross the river if we found the perfect place that was still pretty close). We also like to try somewhere new every year.

As you can see, we have a lot of constraints! Are any cool spots jumping to mind?

In past years, we've tried:
Distrito
Pod
Mad Mex
White Dog Cafe
Vietnam Cafe

How is City Tap House? Might it be worth crossing the water to La Calaca Feliz or Vernick or the Dandelion?

Spiced Apple Cupcakes

I made these last night, and because of the other comments, I put the shredded apple in a colander, sprinkled the teaspoon of salt on top of it to draw out the moisture, and squeezed out the water before adding the apple to the batter. This seemed to alleviate all the problems mentioned below--the cupcakes were not overly moist, they were not uneven in texture, and the cooking time was spot-on.

Ramsay at the London vs. Jean George vs. Bouley

Wow. That's a really tough one. I actually haven't been to Ramsay, but I've generally heard not-great things. I've been to Jean-Georges and Bouley once each (J-G for a fancy lunch, and Bouley for the tasting-menu dinner). They are the two most gorgeous restaurants I've been in, hands-down. I think the food was maybe slightly better at Jean-Georges, but Bouley is a little more comfortable and intimate. J-G more formal, Bouley a bit more friendly. I think you'll be very happy either way.

best banana cream pie in NYC

I haven't had great banana cream pie in New York yet, but if you love b.c.p., you are doing yourself a disservice if you haven't tried banana pudding from Buttercup Bakery (there's one on the Upper West Side, and one on the Upper East). It is quite possibly the best dessert I have ever had.

Manhattan Seltzer Delivery?

Yes. We just signed up for it a few weeks ago, and it's terrific. It's called New York Beverage Company, 718-401-7700. They use the old glass bottles and deliver a case of 10 at a time. It's $20 a case, plus $7 for delivery, $1 Manhattan surcharge. You have to pay a 1-time $80 glass deposit fee. Just call and say that you'd like to set up residential service as a new Manhattan customer.

Hottest Table Salsa in Austin

Tacodeli is amazing. It's great for breakfast and lunch (they're not open for dinner). At breakfast, I like the bacon, egg and potato combination. The bacon is crispy and delicious, but the best part is the potatoes, which are slightly garlicky mashed potatoes. For lunch, I like the Cowboy taco. They also have yummy fish tacos.

Luncheon Recommendations

Guero's Taco Bar has a separate back room that will probably accommodate that many. And they have a fun atmosphere and great appetizers for sharing.

WD-50 - tasty or just weird?

My husband and I went to WD-50 for my birthday in May. We went all-out and ordered the full 9-course tasting menu with the accompanying paired drinks. We loved the experience of it all, and it was very New York-y feeling. But in the end, I'd say that it was more "neat" than "good." The highlight for us was probably the deconstructed steak sandwich, which was a pickled calf's tongue with little fried cubes of mayonnaise and tiny granules of onion. You can actually look at a picture of it on their web site (click the little camera): http://www.wd-50.com/menu.php. Some things weren't as successful, like a smoked eel dish with some kind of caramel foam sauce. We spent well over $400, and it was worth it to do it once, but I'd be very unlikely to go back.
