Have a favorite weekend Greenmarket/ Farmers' market in Albany Area?

What day and hours is the Saratoga market on?
Is it more crowded with race go-ers or are their attentions elsewhere? Silly people.

What produce is in season in NYC area now? Favorite Greenmarket on a weekday?

Thanks for the information on the markets.
Do you have any favorite tri-state regional produce to look for?
(for example in Calif, Blenheim apricots are anticipated and celebrated each year at the farmers' markets in the SF Bay Area.)

Wow - can I now get a Vietnamese sandwich in Troy? Things have come a long way in 25 years!
That market sounds great. I'll look for a link on line. Thanks.

Have a favorite weekend Greenmarket/ Farmers' market in Albany Area?

When I travel I enjoy visiting the farmers' markets and farms that sell their products. We'll be staying near Albany for a weekend, without specific plans and with a car.
Do you have a favorite weekend farmers' market in the Albany Area? If so, do you have a favorite farmer, baker, etc. there?
Also, any favorite farms (or cheese makers) in the Albany area where you can buy cheese or ice cream or pick berries, etc.? Thanks

What produce is in season in NYC area now? Favorite Greenmarket on a weekday?

I'm visiting NY next week. Here in Calif, I am a big fan of our local farmers, markets and love to wait for and celebrate the in-season produce. So when In NYC next week, what do you think will be in season next? From reading the other posts, peaches and blueberries seem to be on their way out (and we get lots of peaches here). Is corn in season? How about melons? What is a specialty of the region that I couldn't get in Calif?
Do you have a favorite weekday greenmarket on Manhattan? Thanks

Pancakes in the northern east bay (north of Oakland)?

I was going to say the ginger pancakes at La Note on Shattuck, too.

Although i don't go there for weekend brunch as it gets so busy.

solo dinner recommendations

I picked up 6 members of my family in the van after they visited the stinking rose for lunch. They thought it had been fine. I did not enjoy driving them all around in the van afterwards, 'though So if you are going to be in close quarters with folks you'd like to make a good impression with, don't eat there before hand! ......... But the garlic fries at the ball game are great!

Wedding Cake!

I was going to suggest Masse's, too. Very nice folks. Very good European-style cakes and individual size cakes and cookies. Love those Parisien macaroons! Just call soon and set up an appointment to taste a few things (one of the best parts of wdding prep), then if youlike what you taste, get on their schedule for a cake. Since you don't need a big one, i imagine (but don't know for sure) that it shouldn't be a problem to get them tomake you one. Also, if you go on a Thursday afternoon, you can visit the organic farmers market half a block away.

And for dessert - Cowabunga Creamery in San Carlos has some great ice cream with a nice casual vibe. And those ice cream pies to take home. Mmmmm.

What happened to the Downtown Restaurant in Berkeley?

I walked by the restaurant called "downtown" yesterday in Berkeley and notice a sign on the window saying, "We hope to open up again soon." Anyone know the scoop?
We've had a bunch of great meals and snacks there over the last few years. I hope it really does open again.

Dinner in Elko? Breakfast in Twin Falls? and lunch in West Yellowstone?

Sounds like some good spots. Thanks so much!

If anyone else has some other ideas, I welcome them. We aren't leaving until the 11th of July.

Berkeley Bowl West - The promised land ... west of Eden

I still find that the shopping carts are too big for the aisles. Sigh. I recommended to the customer help desk that they get those great double decker hand basket carts that Whole Foods has available. I love those teeny manuverable carts! So if you agree, I encourage you to mention it to the customer service desk when you are there, too.

Oak/Berk/SF lunch?

For happy hour at Sea Salt you can also get oysters cheap. We like Sea Slat quite a bit, as well as it's Lalimes family sibling, Fonda, on Solano Avenue. Fonda is a tapas place. COuld do kids, but not as easy as Sea Salt, where there is also a back patio.

IF you'd like to try another sibling in that group, TRex is a California Cuisine take on barbecue and other Southern items. The cocktails at Fonda, Sea Salt and TRex are interesting and yummy.
Speaking of oysters, if you go to the Thursday Farmers market in north Berkeley (2 - 7 on Shattuck at Rose St), you can get some from Hog Island Oysters. But they are in Tomales Bay, not far from Petaluma. I'm not sure what the hours are at their operation (near Marshall?) but you should call them and find outand then barbecue them in Petaluma. Hog Island does a great job with our pacific oysters.

In Berkeley, we also like Liaison for french style. Great, friendly staff. I like anything they do with mushrooms. Their Moules are great, too. They are at Shattuck and Hearst.
Lots of folks like Corso (by Rivoli Chef, is on Shattuck, too). Don't know how it is for kids.
We were at "downtown" restuarant the other night and had some great fried anchovies, deep fried olives, duck confit and a cake made with almonds, orange and olive oil. Good drinks there, too.

Regarding 4th of July - it can get a bit crowded at the Marina, and if you don't get in before they close the overpass for the freeway, you have to walk in. Bring plenty of layers in case the fog blows in on a cold wind. And be prepared to not be able to see anything in case the fog does descend.

Oh, there is also Gregoire with food to go on Cedar just above Shattuck. Great french style food. Not cheap. very very good sauces... and the potato puffs! Oh the potato puffs!

Where in Twin Falls? I know it's not Southwest, but it's on our route

We are headed from the SF Bay Area to Yellowstone so I'd love to hear your ideas for Elko or Winnemucca, too. Got a reply about dinner at basque places in Elko, just the other day here. I expect we'll try to make it as far as Twin Falls our second day out, so if we get back before you go, I'll glad to let you know what we find (but we aren't getting back until August).
I did see on Yelp that there is a coffee place that seems to be well-liked called "Java".
Here is the link www.bowlofsoul.com
That's where we may go for breakfast if we don't get any other ideas.

Dinner in Elko, NV?

Thanks for the tip. Haven't had a Basque meal in a while. And haven't had tongue since I was in school and living at home. When we new my mom was cooking it, we'd ask friends to stay for dinner. Once they accepted, we'd show them what was in the pot. It was always fun to see their response!

Dinner in Elko, NV?

Ah yes! Basque! Thanks so much for the tips. I haven't had tongue since the 70s when I was in high school. We loved inviting friends over for dinner and after they accepted we'd show them what was cooking in the pot. Always a great response!

CHEAP eats in SF/Berkeley

We like Cancun Taqueria in downtown Berkeley, at 2134 Allston Way between Shattuck Ave and Oxford Street. It's been reviewed on Chow before. Great selection, and it is right near BART.

Another great pizza place, about a mile or so from North Berkeley BART (Monterey and Hopkins neighborhood) is Gioia. Never know what 5 or so combos they'll have available, but all of them are good. It's at 1586 Hopkins ( gioiapizzeria.com ). Not a lot of choice and few seats, but a local favorite.

Food near BART

How about Pleasant Hill BART. My hubby had to take a job out there and he really misses lunch time south of Market in SF. Any ideas for places within walking distance form Pleasant Hill BART? (of course, we know it takes about 20 minutes just to cross an intersection on foot there!)

Dinner in Elko, NV?

This July we are driving from Carson City (NV) to, perhaps, Twin Falls (ID) in a day, taking Hwys 80 and 93. A long day. And the next day we will head up hwys 84, 88, 15 and 20 through West Yellowstone on our way to Tower Junction/Roosevelt.

Anyone have a recommendation for simple good spots between Winnemucca and West Yellowstone?

We are especially interested in a good local lunch or dinner place in Elko, a dinner or breakfast gem in Twin Falls (see "Other Places in America" list), a lunch place in West Yellowstone and any suggestions for Yellowstone Park.

Seen mixed reviews for within the park and are planning on simple food, snacks and soda fountains there. (We'll save our fancy dining for here in the SF Bay Area)

Hints on other fabulous spots along the way are welcome, too!

Has anyone been to Sydney's Mountain Bistro in West Yellowstone this year?

Thanks!

Thanks for the warning on Signal Mountain Lodge food. We are staying there, but I'll look for Calico Pizza for dinner. Any other note worthy spots between there and Salt lake City, for the drive south?

Anything New I-5 from SF to LA?

Not new but a confirmation of previous posting. About two weeks ago on a Saturday morning we had breakfast in Bakersfield at the 24th Street Cafe, The complimentary brekfast at the restaurant next to our hotel was eggs and bacon with no substitutions, so we went tot he cafe. It is a great local place. The line of empty chairs on the sidewalk with a big caraffe of coffee waiying told us that folks liked this spot, and later it would be crowed. We went inside and they let us sit at the counter. The food was fine hearty breakfast stuff with lots of choices for pancakes, waffles, etc. The old custom of turning your coffee cup over if you want some was in practice. Turns out we had inadvertently upset the tradition of who sits where for the regulars at the counter, but folks were very friend (not overly so). I had a short stack of pancakes and my DH had stuffed french toast which was two fabulous pieces of french toast with a slab of cream cheese between them! We'll be back if we are ever in the area around breakfast time. Thanks to whomever posted it in the first place!

New Farmer's Market-Little Italy SD

I'm so glad you posted about the San Diego farmers' market. Here in the SF Bay Area, I love our farmers' markets and wait each year for my favorite produce to come into season and to get them form some wonderful and friendly farmers. Nothing like fresh unbruised white nectarines, a whole box of fresh blueberries, heirloom tomatoes (without processor contamination) and fresh field greens (without processor contamination). Anyhow, enough about the health pluses of shopping at small scale farm stalls - I'm really excited to check out the new farmers' market you spoke of in San Diego. When we go on vacations these days, we google for farmers markets on our route. My kids and I love them. Its an important part of our vacation and food experience. It also leads us to on-farm farm stands run by the market farmers. Some of those have been out of this world. (Hmmm......There was that pie place near Whistler, and that ice cream "farm" near Parksville (both in British Columbia); and at the markets, the crepes and melons in Paris,....The berries at the U District market in Seattle.....and roasted corn in Boulder, CO..mmmmmmm!).
Thanks for posting! Do you know what time the San Diego Little Italy market closes on Saturdays? We'll be getting into town that day.
