We also have Vinny's Pizza in Alpine, which is on par with Bronx. The fact that we have epic beer AND pizza is proof that Alpine is the chosen land.
Restaurant Suggestions for a week in SD (celiac-friendly)
I am not familiar with gluten-free north of the 8, but Salad Style in downtown San Diego would be a excellent option for you.

A Chau for Vietnamese sandwiches, corner of Menlo and El Cajon Bl
Pho Hoa for Pho, Euclid and El Cajon Bl
Cafe Istanbul for Moroccan/Med, 6th and E in downtown
Red Sea for Ethiopian (I have not been there, but I know people who have and rave about it), not sure about the address, maybe 4600 University Ave
I just found a new place for Japanese breakfast, called Hinotez, and located on Balboa across the street from the Chevy dealership. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but their breakfast is delish.
I definitely give second votes for Sab E Lee for Thai and Alforon for Med. You might also like Haritna.
need help with 2-day itinerary on a budget please!
Salad Style on 800 F Street would be a good option for lunch. The portions are generous and they use quality ingredients.
Where to find gluten, soy, canola oil, peanut, egg, cow dairy, corn free breakfast in San Diego?
About a year ago I cut out wheat, sugar, and dairy from my diet. I lost ten pounds without batting an eye, my energy levels became better, my skin cleared up, and my overall fitness improved. Rest assured, I indulge in the occasional pizza and ice cream, but cutting these items out of my regular diet was an excellent choice.
The Mission has gluten-free bread for toast, and their "Zen" breakfast is a wonderful gluten-free option.
This Week According to the Superdiners
This week the brain trust is celebrating food on a stick. Are we allowed to write WTF here? Because W T F !! Welcome to San Diego! We are very excited about burgers and corn dogs!
Lunch near Old Globe Theatre?
It's not the exact cuisine you want, but Barrio Star has excellent food.
Where to eat, when you don't have to pay? I.e. it's the corporate tab.
The ONLY choice is Addision.
Gaslamp downtown ethnic restaurant in May?
I second this idea, the food and service are good, and they should be able to accommodate a large party.
Cohn restaurants are not popular here, but Blue Point could be an option. They have notations on their menu for "gluten free" items, and can handle large parties with ease.
Nice dinner in SD
I would shy away from the Gaslamp in general, with the exception of Cafe Chloe. Most of the restaurants in the 30th Street/University Avenue area would be well within your price range, in particular Urban Solace and The Linkery.
There are a boatload of Italian restaurants in Little Italy on India Street, and this area is excellent for pre/post dinner walking around.
Reuben E. Lee
Reuben E Lee? Good grief I am now spinning in a whirl of prom memories on pillows made of pink taffeta dresses from 1986. I LOVED that place.
Breakfast/Brunch/Lunch for 12 after graduation mass North Park area & beyond
mmmm, The Mission comes to mind, though it is a bit diner-ish and tends to be a crowded madhouse.
Please comment on my dining list for my 5-day trip to SD
I would add Shirahama for sushi, which is located on Convoy. This is a tiny, quiet, extremely Japanese restaurant, and the food is excellent. I am so happy to see you are going to visit Alforon. This place is way underrated. Samira, one of the owners, is a gracious and welcoming host.
Have you considered Kitchen 1540 in Del Mar? I have not been there, but it's very popular.
I have been to Market once, and it was very middling. For the price and location I expected a fairly high level of professional service, but instead it was a bit on the juvenile "how you guys doing" end and there was A TON of very annoying and obvious up-selling.
The Gaslamp Quarter is largely forgettable for decent food, with the exception of Cafe Chloe, a quaint French cafe.
Oh! Definitely consider Manna BBQ and Mongolian Hot Pot in Kearney Mesa, if you venture to the Convoy area. They are "cook your own" and offer a tasty, unique dining experience. At Mongolian Hot Pot, you boil your food, and Manna has a small BBQ on the table for cooking.
Enjoy!
Visiting and need a resto for Fish-Veggie only eater for Birthday dinner
Several people on this board are fans of The Fishery. I have not personally been there, but it receives good reviews. Sea Rocket Bistro would be a good choice. I HAVE been there and loved it. The drawback to Sea Rocket is no view of the water. The Fishery is located in PB so you would be near the water.
Dinner Rec w/Good Vegetarian Option
Hmmm...Sea Rocket? There is a new Mediterranean place on Main in El Cajon called Mezza. I have not been there but it looks like they are trying to be slightly higher end.
Kearny Mesa area dining
You will be staying in the middle of food heaven! Try Mongolian Hot Pot, Manna, Convoy Tofu House, Original Pancake House, Little Dumpling, Crab Hut (excellent for kids), Shirahama (NOT the best for kids), Sab E Lee, Yakitori Yakyudori, and if you need a fast fun dinner, In N Out.
WineSeller and Brasserie
Yeah, I figured there must have been a bad patch. If I was going to nitpick, then I could say, okay yeah, the food was fairly traditional. However, the quality of the ingredients is what made each dish. I mean, leek puree? Who cares right? But they must have used the greatest leeks ever because the entire flavor spectrum of this rather humble vegetable was completely exploited.
WineSeller and Brasserie
Just returned from dinner.
The greeting, low key, unobtrusive.
The room, understated and attractive.
The service? Ummmm...excellent. Quiet. PROFESSIONAL. No, "hey guys can i getcha sumthin ta drink?" Rather, "Good evening, may I bring you a drink?"
And the food the food the foooooood. Oh yes oh yes oh yes.......
We shared the Foie Gras with maple syrup, banana, and pancakes. I was a bit apprehensive, as I do not generally care for Foie Gras being mucked up with a bunch of stuff, but this was served with juuuust the perfectly sweetened banana, and the perfectly delicate pancakes, and the right amount of maple syrup.
Dinner? I had the duck confit with mushroom risotto. The duck was wonderful, not overcooked, juicy, crisp skin, and the risotto was a great balance between creamy goodness and earthy mushroom humility. Husband had the filet with leek puree. Hands down, one of the best filets we had ever eaten. The leek puree was excellent. Leek puree? Excellent? Huh? Yeah, it was excellent.
Dessert? The profiteroles with homemade ice cream. Did you know that if you served their caramel ice cream at the UN, you would have world peace in 5 minutes?
Frankly, I don't know why this place is not bursting with clientele, though I must say, we loved the abundant parking, the quiet room, and the spot-on dining experience.
So, go, if you must. But keep it on the down low. We don't want the Gascrampers to migrate north.
Looking for Chowhound fare in Downtown San Diego
Well, as far as I am concerned, our poor OP has unknowingly asked for the Chupacabra.
mmmm Gascramp recs, if we must...
Cafe Chloe
Cafe Istanbul
Sultan Shwarma
Panevino, though I have not been there in a long time
Asian? Get thee to Convoy
Pho? Pho Hoa, Euclid Avenue at El Cajon Boulevard
Everything else is a loud burger joint incarnation of Dick's Last Resort; with stupid names like "Wet Willies" and "Whiskey Girl."
Let's Play Burger Bingo
I can't decide if that long list is wonderful or depressing. In Washington DC, San Francisco, New York, Portland, and many other places, that would be the list of epic places to eat. sigh....
Red Light District / Gaslamp
Yes, agreed. I love excellent food, but is really asking so much to also feel relaxed and happy? We ate at Urban Solace one night and were (at first) seated at an outdoor table, in the winter, between two large groups, in metal chairs, at a metal table that was rickety because of the uneven ground. I thought, are you joking? I was angry that I had to complain about what was such an obviously crappy, crammed-in table.
RL sounds like it is geared toward the current crop of the majority of the Gaslamp customers, which is really loud, really drunk, overly spoiled kids. It sucks the OP and his wife had to withstand a weird dining experience to obtain interesting food.
I miss the more quiet Gaslamp days when Fio's ruled the roost. sigh.
WineSeller and Brasserie
Thank you all for the replies. We are going to give it a try. Our work schedules are opposite right now, so we have each taken a day off to get our taxes done, and have dinner. We want quiet and intimate, solid service, but are not willing to deal with Friday night parking-crowd-waitlist headache. WB seemed to fit the bill. The menu is not as progressive or creative as we would prefer, but it looks like there are some flavorful options. Far be it from me to argue with good old fashioned French.
The Super Diners do East County
Come to think of it, they missed a TON of places. Sab-E-Lee in Santee, there is place called Michael's Grill in Santee that I have been to, but I know a few people that love it. We have Vinny's Pizza here in Alpine, which gives Bronx a run for their money. Also in Alpine, Salsa Mexican, which makes a mean Albondigas.
The Super Diners do East County
No problem! I have also have it on good authority that Valley Foods, the Mediterranean grocery store, makes Naan bread to order.
WineSeller and Brasserie
I looked for reviews on the San Diego board and could not find one. Their menu looks basic but good. Opinions? We are considering them for dinner next Friday.
The Super Diners do East County
They failed to mention the line of Mediterranean restaurants in El Cajon! I am partial to Sultan Baklava, which yes, makes their own Baklava in house. The owners are Turkish and they make excellent food.
Also a hidden gem: Thai Time on North Johnson across the street from Parkway Plaza. Wonderful Thai food that is presented beautifully.
Eats in and around Julian?
The small cafe at Cuyamaca Lake has good pie, homemade chili, and good bratwurst. It's very casual and diner-ish with interesting locals and atmosphere.
Sea Rocket Bistro Review
Husband and I just had dinner at SR last Wednesday night. The meal was wonderful, we were so excited to have such a quality meal, and then....
I just read the chef is leaving to go work for Brian Malarkey at his new place polyester or cotton or whatever the heck it's called....;((
