review: urban tea loft - chandler, az

i met a friend here for lunch today. outside the restaurant hung a sign that said Phoenix magazine called them one of the top 25 new restaurants. i was so excited when i walked in and when i saw the cute modern atmosphere and that the menu had "tea sandwiches", i tweeted right when away that i loved the place. maybe i jinxed it and jumped the gun, or maybe it would have been bad anyway. i tend to believe the latter, definitely not wanting to accept blame for the disappointments that followed.

my friend was running a little late, so i tried some of their tropical iced green tea. ($3.50), wow, kinda steep for iced tea, and i swear it tasted the same as the one from einstein's bagels. when my friend arrived, she ordered a water. the server (Katie, I believe) informed us that the soup of the day was vegetable beef. i was a little disappointed by the soup choice... seemed very blah and boring and not very urban tea room!

my friend wanted to order the half salad and soup with the panzanella salad, but when she asked the server informed her that the salad did not include the steak when ordered with the combo. she ordered the salad ($16) instead and asked the server to leave out the tri-color pasta. the server seemed to think this was strange and asked her if she just wanted the steak, spinach, vegetables etc. instead. my friend was like, uh yeah i want the salad without the pasta. that seemed reasonable right?

i ordered the half sandwich and soup ($10) with the caprese sandwich. the server informed me that the caprese was not available in a half sandwich, but the tomato mozzarella sandwich was, and it was the same thing. why are you even mentioning it then katie?

of course, i found out the answer when the food arrived. instead of a yummy caprese sandwich with balsamic tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil on ciabatta, i was served mozzarella and plain tomatoes on soggy white bread with no basil and no balsamic. the soup was served in a container that i can only compare to a ramekin and it was full of fatty beef, potatoes and carrots. it was beef stew, not beef vegetable. it would have been nice if katie had mentioned that the sandwich would be sans basil, ciabatta and balsamic.

my friend's plate was not much better. she was served a steak with a small side of vegetables. it wasn't a salad at all, and explained the server's strange questions when my friend asked her to leave out the pasta. of course, she did not mention that the dish was a slab of steak with a side of vegetables that they decided to call a salad.

i tried to eat my sandwich, but i couldn't bring myself to eat soggy white bread with cheese and tomatoes. i ate a bit of the soup, but who am i kidding a bit was all that was there. the soup wasn't much better. it was just the lesser of the two evils.

when katie came to check on us, i mentioned to her that the sandwich didn't really seem the same as the caprese, and her reply was that they had a different chef today and the other chef usually makes them the same. she offered me a scone. no thanks!

the bill arrived, and she had charged us for 2 teas bringing the total close to $35 for lunch in a terrible tea room!

starbucks green tea latte is really gross

Yes, the matcha powder is mixed with sugar so the calories come from there and the syrup (which switched from melon to classic). And yes, they use a vanilla soymilk.

Indy chow worthy spots for lunch/dinner?

I don't see Indy mentioned on this board that often, but I travel there frequently for work. I was just wondering what some of the spots are that the locals love? I only have $30/day, so I'm looking for pretty moderatly priced lunch and dinner joints. Thanks!

starbucks green tea latte is really gross

I'm not sure where to tell you to go, but I do know that the matcha powder at starbucks is mixed with sugar so it will be difficult to duplicate the exact consistancy and taste even if you do find the matcha powder. All I know is I'm so sad about the discontinuation of the melon. Please call or write to starbucks to tell them you want it back! If enough people complain, maybe they will bring it back!

I agree! Chi Thai is delicious, and I hope more people will check it out! I've had both chinese and thai dishes, and everything I've tried has been great. this is also a perfect place for vegetarians as they have many great tofu dishes.

Lunch near Utica, OH?

No but I do have a recommendation for Lancaster. Have you ever tried Annie's Cheesecake and Tea Room? Delicious "ladies lunch" spot with homemade soups and great mini croissants (chicken, egg, and tuna salad) and the most wonderful cheesecake!
