Piranha Killer sushi (Arlington): Sushi perfection

Some time ago, I dated a girl that lived in Arlington. We went to Piranha several times. I can't recall anything specifically other than I absolutely loved it. Definitely worth visiting.

Dallas Desserts

La Duni. Their Quatros Leches (or is it Tres?) cake is almost perfect. The only problem is it is so rich that it sends me into a sugar coma.

How to show a Foodie a good time in Dallas

I've said repeatedly that the best view of Dallas is from The Bar Belmont. Absolutely gorgeous. Even though I've heard great things about Tillman's, I haven't been. Hatties', on the other hand, used to be on the regular rotation. Great food at a great price point.

What are you drinking right now?

Ibstatguy, how is the Cune Rose?

1 week in Texas, help ?

Honey Bee, I'd add driving out to August E's and having their Mesquite Fired Tenderloin Trimmings Burger and sitting on the back patio. That might be one of my favorite places in the State!!

abacus tasting menu or pick and choose

It's pretty darn good, but at $50 a plate count me out!!! Ah, if only I traded energy commodities . . .

abacus tasting menu or pick and choose

I don't get Abacus. Overpriced, underwhelming food. I have been fortunate enough to get an up close and personal view to the food, the concept, etc., and I just don't think the quality matches the price point or the hype.

Just my honest opinion.

Dallas on 6 Meals

Report back on your whirlwind tour! Wow, what a series of meals . . .

Dallas on 6 Meals

There is a brand new French-Mexican fusion bistro called Sol'ey that just opened on Henderson. I ate the other day and it is inventive, fun and really delicious. I highly recommend it.

Other dinner suggestions:

The Grape (great pates, fun cheese list, extremely well-priced considering the quality of the food and on top of it all, the chef/owner Brian Luscher is a heck of a guy)
Lola's (best wine program in Texas);
Tei-Tei (overall my favorite sushi in Dallas - make sure to get some of the grilled fish);
El Ranchito (my favorite Mexican - it's not Tex-Mex - fantastic environment);
Hattie's (awesome, well-priced "Southern" cooking in Bishop Arts).

Best Texas Wine

Try Inwood Estates. Price point is higher than Becker. Quality is significantly higher.

For you wine drinkers out there....

So was it worth $42?

Where can I find the best Asian noodle soups in Dallas?

I go to King Noodle about 2X per month. I'm no expert, but the pork-broth-based-soups are delicious. I especially enjoy the Seafood versions.

The Cold Cucumber appetizer is also worth ordering. My taste buds tell me it's cucumber marinated in rice wine vinegar (or something similar?) with onions, garlic, carrots and serranos. For $2.25, it is one of my favorite dishes in town.

DFW- Best beef noodle soup around these parts?

What do you mean by "beef noodle soup"? I'm assuming you mean Asian soups.

King Noodle has excellent noodle soups with both beef and seafood. First Chinese BBQ has excellent noodle soupls as well, but I think the meats are generally pork and/or duck.

Best of the Dallas Area

Sushi Axiom is NOT open. My post says that I have heard the Fort Worth Sushi Axiom absolutely rocks. I've heard that from several people. I like The Capitol and Natsumi and have poked my head inside SA. Wow, are they ever spending a lot of money. I can't wait until it opens.

I actually ate at Tei Tei last nite. I can't believe how good it is. I can't believe how much I spent. That damn sake . . .

Best of the Dallas Area

Well, you just made it easy on me.

Tei-Tei. Outstanding fish. Incredible grilled items (the salmon collar is one of the tastiest items on earth). Red Miso Soup with Seafood is fantastic. Great people watching. Great bartenders. Stiff drinks.

Yutaka. Very tiny. Very delicious. Some of the best sushi in Dallas, if not THE best.

Steel. Super Sushi/Asian Fusion menu. Super trendy. I prefer Tei-Tei and Yutaka, but every time I've been to Steel, I always think to myself "Why don't I go more often?"

Sushi Axiom - just about to open in the new development on Henderson. I've head the Sushi Axiom in Fort Worth absolutely rocks.

Closer to you, everyone raves about Sushi Sake and Mr. Sushi.

Best of the Dallas Area

What is your budget? You looking for swanky or hole-in-the-wall?

Yutaka and Tei Tei for Sushi. Both expensive, both delicious.

The Grape for a Bistro. If you leave right now, you might catch me there. I'm having dinner at The Grape tonite.

Asian Mint for Thai. It's good and centrally located.

Cafe San Miguel and El Ranchito for Mexican. Luna Noche is OK as well.

I haven fallen in LOVE with King Noodle. I am no expert on Chinese Food, but good god are their various noodle soups delicious. First Chinese Rocks as well, but there is just so much . . . fat. Duck fat, pork fat, ribs, etc. King Noodle seems to be healthier and the broth usually has a nice flavor to it.

If you're looking for good bar grub, head to Vickery Park, The Old Monk, The Capitol or The Libertine. All have good to very good bar food and are great places to get all kinds of liquored up. Which is fun.

[DFW] Good Inexpensive Seafood

Fish City Grill (it's ok)

Aw Shucks (I LOVE the atmosphere and the boiled shrimp)

Daddy Jack's (It's on Lower Greenville. I haven't been in years, but if you're looking for something different, this could be the place)

Ixtapa Bay (It's a Mexican seafood joint on Garland and Peavy or something like that. I haven't been in a while, but I remember the Seven Seas Seafood Soup being quite tasty)

Dallas Fish Market (Downtown - might be as expensive as Trulucks)

cravin' some soul-full southern food in Dallas

I second Sweet Georgia Brown. I loved it. However, mdconnell probably should know that my lasting memory of SGB is the sign on the door that reads "No Handguns Allowed Inside".

No joke!! I haven't been in 2 years or so, but did I ever chuckle when I read that. Really, the only thing that nearly killed me was my inability to stop eating. Fantastic spot.

Haven't too South Dallas Cafe in a while, either, but those collard greens are SPICY and the oxtail is so tender. Once again, great spot.

For a different atmosphere, a different crowd, a different concept and a different price point, but a concept taht shares its lineage with the first two concepts, try Hattie's. I've probably been 15 times. Great spot and Bishop's Square is a great place to spend an entire evening just browsing.

Hattie's would be my recommendation for dinner - SGB and 1DC would be perfect for a huge lunch followed by a long nap.

Happy eating!

What are you drinking right now?

Catena Alta 2004 Malbec Mendoza. When I bought it, I did not know that Wine Spectator gave it the 23rd slot for its Top 100 Wines of 2007.

Beautiful wine - well balanced, lush with notes of dark berry, cedar and spice and a finish that never finishes. It just lingers on . . .

To me, it's a wine that almost any red wine drinker will like. Great fruit, but not jammy. Woody and spicy, but not overly so. Tannic, but not overly so. It is "medium" and balanced all the way through.

Visiting Dallas for a week: Regional local/food and bars

One other thing. If you haven't been to Central Market (Lover's/Greenville), I'd recommend going. Even though I was born in DC, I have no idea regarding which type of massive, cavernous foodie joints you have access to. Great produce, nice (if a bit overpriced) wine selection, fantastic sandwiches (see my post on best sandwich in Dallas), live music on the weekends, super fantastic people watching, etc. IMHO, it's worth an hour.

If you like to exercise, go to the Katy Trail (jogging or biking). You will not be disappointed with the people watching and, for Dallas, it's quite beautiful. You can also head out to White Rock Lake. Great views of downtown.

If you want the best view of downtown Dallas, go to The Bar Belmont. It's in a super funky area of town. If you have a pulse, you'll enjoy it.

I can't believe I didn't mention this with my first post - Hattie's in Oak Cliff. Upscale, downhome cooking, good crowd, surrounded by numerous other fun spots in a walkable area. I'd actually put Hattie's on the "can't miss" list.

Anyone been to Pulcinella on Henderson yet?

Drove by yesterday and saw some little yellow signs out that indicate Pulcinella is open for lunch.

Anybody been? Is there a special lunch menu?

Seems like the reviews here were this way and that. Anybody been lately for dinner? I went to The Capitol on Saturday and it seemed as if Pulcinella had a nice crowd.

I've got to get back to see for myself if they have worked out any of the kinks, but I thought maybe some of my fellow ChowHounders could fill me in first.

[DFW] best patio drinks and apps?

Ah, now we can make some suggestions.

Go to Tillman's. Ask for Michael Weinstein. Tell him that you heard his food kicks arse and see if he can do anything off menu for you. Don't know if he can, but try.

Before you go around name dropping, head to the Bar Belmont for drinks. Best view of downtown from anywhere. Bar Belmont is tough to beat if you're looking to properly enjoy a couple of drinks.

You can thank me, the infamous EE, after your husband thanks you for being so thoughtful!!

Visiting Dallas for a week: Regional local/food and bars

When I have more time, I'll post properly.

El Ranchito on Jefferson is an ABSOLUTE MUST for an out-of-towner that wants a taste of Dallas.

For kick-ass pub food, try The Old Monk, Vickery Park and/or The Capitol. They're all within 1 mile of each other on Henderson.

If you want a neat little neighborhood bistro, The Grape is a good bet. It would also be my recommendation for brunch.

Margaritas on the patio of The Blue Goose or Primo's.

Sushi at Tei-Tei.

Burgers on the patio at Jake's.

Cafe San Miguel for regional Mexican.

Natsumi for the best gelato/sorbet in town.

If you want something more exclusive, do research on Stephen Pyles, York Street or Lola's.

If you want a trendy pizza scene, try Fireside (it's gloppy and gut-busting, but Dallasites sure seem to love it).

Dog Friendly Patios in Dallas??

Barcadia on Henderson. Nice big patio, decent-enough bar food and a bunch of old-school video games!!

Where is the best shrimp cocktail in Dallas/Plano?

Next time you make a batch, I want some!! I love me some horseradish!

Where is the best shrimp cocktail in Dallas/Plano?

This doesn't directly answer your question, but it comes close.

If you are ever going to do a horseradish-infused shrimp cocktail at home, get the Cocktail Sauce at Central Market. It may be the best cocktail sauce I have ever tried.

[DFW] Central 214 Lunch ?

Based on what I saw from the bar on a Saturday nite three weekends ago, I can only imagine it will be fairly slow. I have not eaten there in a while, but the three or four times I did eat there were all enjoyable experiences.

Not the most helpful of replies, but it's all I've got . . .

What are you drinking right now?

My liver is currently drinking the remnants of last nite's binge.

[DFW] Dali's New Chef!!!

I think they have finally done a soft-opening/investor party type thing. They should open for real in a week or two.

Sushi Axiom in Shops on Henderson

Has anybody eaten recently at the Sushi Axiom in Fort Worth? I did a search and nothing came up. I know somebody that lives close by and while he's never eaten there, he says it is always packed.

I am TREMENDOUSLY excited about the new Sushi Axiom about to open up at the Shops on Henderson. Should I be? I have walked through the restaurant space and it looks like they are spending a TON of money on the space.

Thanks!
