Undici White Truffle Dinner- Rip Off of the year!

Sigh. We have a $75 gift cert to Undici. We've never been there because of disappointments at Basil Ts and because of reviews on this board. What to do, what to do?

I thought that they had a limited menu out back. Guess I'm mistaken. No matter. They've closed for season.

Not that it matters but I think Irene took them out. Still miss D&Es. Got my oyster fix in NYC last night.

Beach Tavern, Monmouth Beach - now open, anybody go?

The DH and I went for lunch, for our second visit, last Saturday when the rain nixed our plans. We sat at one of the bar-height tables along the back wall of the bar. From here, we not only had water views but views of the restaurant and bar. Much thought went into the design of the place.

As we walked past the bar to our seats, we noticed others drinking Bloody Marys. My husband ordered one. I, upon learning that they use fresh-squeezed juice, ordered a screwdriver. They were served in tall glasses. My husband, who usually orders extra horse radish on the side, enjoyed his drink as served. We each ordered one refill.

At our server's recommendation, we ordered cauliflower tempura as an appetizer. Highly recommend. I commented that the serving plate appeared to have been purchased specifically for this dish. Eight large florets were dipped in a seasoned batter and fried, with not a trace of greasiness. The sauce on which the florets were arranged complimented the cauliflower perfectly. Note that I do not like cauliflower.

We ordered a cubano and a burger. The sandwiches were served with a huge amount of fries on the plate. The fries didn't look like much but actually tasted like potatoes. Turns out that the potatoes are cut on the premises and soaked in water so that they attain crispiness when fried. Color me happy.

The burger was fine. The cubano was excellent. The server mentioned something about a cooking apparatus for pork, in which pork will never get dried out. Took half of each sandwich and more than half of our fries home.

Some notes: Our cutlery was replaced, as it should be, between courses. The server brought the cutlery on a platter lined with a linen cloth. No condiments are on the tables. Without having to ask, catsup was brought to us in little cups with saucers and tiny spoons. I asked for salt with my fries. It too was served in a little cup. My server advised that I be careful with salting the fries and he was right--they were perfectly seasoned in the kitchen.

The bill came to $80 before tip.

Chef Paul seems to be positioned in front of the kitchen opposite the hostess station. I can't tell if it's because it's the best position to command the kitchen or if they expect patrons to recognize him from Top Chef Masters and approach.

The management took care to hire professionals, it seems. The staff are not all locals as I expected (and dreaded after experiencing consistent horrible service at another local restaurant, year after year, no lesson learned). I don't sense any of the newly opened restaurant confusion here.

We're going back on Friday night with friends. I asked for 7 o'clock and was offered 6 or 8. You cannot yet make reservations on Open Table. Soon I was told.

Four of us went at 4:30 on Saturday. (Four locals who spent a lot of time at Sallee Tee's so comparison is inevitable.) We were lucky to have a seasoned server, Mary. We started with oysters, which were excellent but pricey ($3.50 each east coast/$4 west coast). In addition to the usual oyster setup, they were served with mignonette, which is a requirement of mine. We shared the pork buns. They were a hit.

Entrees: Oriecchiette, salmon, scallops, and filet mignon. The filet was the winner. The accompanying mashed potatoes were dreamy. The salmon and scallops disappeared before I could taste. I did not care for my oriecchiette. I love this dish at home and at other local restaurants. It had a sweetness and brown color from either caramelized onions (not evident in the dish) or balsamic vinegar.

I'd like to see a better selection of wines by the glass. One could purchase a fair glass of wine for $8. One would need to spend quite a bit more for a quality glass of wine.

The bill was $300 for four of us including tip. We each had 2-3 drinks (low-end beer/$8 wine).

We'll probably be back because it's within stumbling distance. Will report back when we do.

La tapatiare Asbury Park?

Six of us had a delicious meal at this place in July. The DH and I had enchiladas mole, as we are mole-obsessed. We loved it.

We then read on this board about La Valentina in Long Branch. Went there for breakfast in early August and were so impressed, we couldn't wait to get back for dinner. Such a friendly place. Best green and red salsas in the area, though the red salsa differs from day to day. We've had dinner there several times and it's always a hit with our friends.

I heard that the two places were owned by the same folks.

North Beach grille in Long Branch

I have been dining here for breakfast and lunch for years. The food has always been good and fresh. They have many healthy choices, such as yogurt/fruit/granola parfaits, and some not-so-healthy choices, such as potato pancakes (an annual birthday treat). My usual breakfast is the Veggie Sandwich. The DH orders the loaded salmon bagel. You can order just about anything, really.

Though the menu did not change and most of the service staff remained (though they seem to be slowly dwindling away), something about the place is "off" to me since the new ownership (husband and wife team). They can't seem to turn tables the way they used to. The owners seem to be still green, shouting to each other constantly, even though years have passed. This past weekend, we stood in the door waiting to be seated. Every employee and the owners saw us, yet it was as if we were invisible. The new owner seated folks that had clearly walked in behind us. Just an odd vibe...maybe it's me.

Wild salmon in eastern Monmouth?

I'm craving some grilled wild salmon. I don't care for Atlantic or farmed salmon. Any restaurant recommendations in Eastern Monmouth?

Barnacle Bill's, Rumson NJ change of format/policy please read and share your opinion.........

Really? They had only had room for two boats, which was rarely available. They never claimed to "allow" dock and dine. The end of the pier was simply available to those who wanted to dine at Barnacle Bills. I assumed it was an arrangement with the marina owners.

Sadly, the "boater friendly" restaurants are slim pickins in the area...at least for waterfront establishments that I'm interested in dining at.

Soft shell crabs

Spoke with the fishmonger at Little Silver Seafood on Saturday. He had gotten his first soft-shell crabs this season on Friday, and he plans to get more this Friday. He was buying them for $8 each and selling them for $10 each. He said in Manhattan, they were selling crabs from the same lot/batch for $17 each.

I hate it when a business does not maintain its website. Tells me that they don't really care about the customer experience.
