fershore's Profile

First trip to the Atlantic Bar & Grill in Seaside Park this year....and learned something new about one of the specials that was offered.

Escolar is often served as "white tuna" at sushi restaurants. I used to always order 2-3 pieces of white tuna sushi (tastes like butter). I had the reaction noted in the article only once after dining at a chowhound-favorite Monmouth County sushi restaurant. I googled the symptom and came upon the article in the link above. I did not eat over 6 ounces unless the scallop appetizer that I had had escolar substituted for the scallops bits (not an impossibility). That night, we noticed that the restaurant had taken a number of cost-cutting measures (cheaper napkins, no bean sprouts). The experience ruined me for sushi.

Where to watch soccer (Premier League football) on Sunday?

D'Arcy's in Bradley Beach

Place to celebrate my 35th birthday in Northern NJ?

Don Pepe is a fun atmosphere for a birthday gathering. Is Pine Brook too far from you?

Best Breakfast Monmouth County

Agree with all of Papa Bing's recommendations though I haven't had the pancakes from the Broadway Diner in RB. For pancakes like Nana made, I go to Richard's in West End. For funky, thicker pancakes, I go to Kitchen Witch. North Beach Grill was my standing breakfast favorite for years because of the fresh ingredients, including fresh juices, and the diverse menu. Plus they would make anything you ask for with a smile. I haven't been to NBG since it's been under new ownership (not a fan of the new owner so may not be back for a while) though I hear nothing has changed - still all good. The River Front Cafe in Sea Bright is a recent discovery and my current favorite.

Newark near Prudential Center, pre-concert suggestions needed...

I second Fornos of Spain. We parked in their private gated lot while we dined before a Pearl Jam show. When we asked if we could leave our car there during the show, they agreed. We walked straight up the road to the Pru Center. It was perfect.

Ideas for dinner this Wednesday please

I suggest that you search this board for ideas in Cranbury.

Ming Ying Long Branch suggestions please

Did you search for "Ming Ying" on this board? We tried the dishes recommended in those threads and our personal favorites.

We enjoyed the spicy shrimp dumplings and volcano beef particularly. It's all usually good to excellent, but as with some local Asian take-out places, we have...once or twice... endured oily, subpar food. The occasional bad day in the kitchen.

BYO recommendations needed

Belford Bistro, Belford
Bay Avenue Trattoria, Highlands

The Avenue in Long Branch, NJ

I'm sorry that the bartenders weren't doing much tending during your visit. I had the same experience the first time I went there, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Every visit since has been surprisingly pleasant. The DD usually has only 1 cocktail and then we tempt fate. We don't eat in PV.

Pizza in Monmouth County

Drooling for the octopus salad. Can't wait to try this place.

The Avenue in Long Branch, NJ

While I agree that Avenue is overpriced for what you get on the typical menus and I would absolutely never sit for a meal there, I have to disagree with you about happy hour. The oysters have always been served exactly right and are above par (I'm betting Lusty Lobster). They have been consistently shucked perfectly, perfect accoutrements, perfect temperature, and the piece de resistance - mignonette...made perfectly...and tiny spoons! The bartenders can be indifferent one day and attentive the next. But $5 for top-shelf martinis? Color me there! It's also a pretty place, nice to bring out of town friends.

Did you mean the Sitting Duck? If yes, apples and oranges. Of course you get more value there. It's a pub. No snark intended.

My point is that Avenue can serve a purpose...for me it's to fill the oyster craving with a cocktail in a beautiful atmosphere then I'm off to dine someplace else.

Ideas for fresh strawberries

A thick syrup-y balsamic vinegar. You can find them in all of the local gourmet food stores.

I recently received a chocolate balsamic vinegar as a gift. That would be perfect!

Rooneys Long Branch. Really?

What was your opinion of the food?

Seafood or Generally good restaurant in/near Tinton Falls NJ

JustJake: I have dined at Portofino 2 or 3 times. Each time, I enjoyed my food. I recall enjoying the salads. I know that I had some type of white fish and wishing that I had had the branzino that table neighbors had ordered. The service was at times over-attentive and nonexistent at others (like when you needed a wine refill). It struck me as a little expensive.

I live within walking distance of Portofino's. But like you, I just don't think of it. In this category, I enjoy Piccola Italia in Oakhurst more (but forget about it too). I have had outstanding meals there and still I don't think of it... I wonder why that is.

Seafood or Generally good restaurant in/near Tinton Falls NJ

I second Ray's and Navesink Fishery. I hear mixed reviews on Blue Water Seafood in Red Bank. All are BYO.

Best Olives?? Central Jersey Area

Sickle's in Little Silver has a nice olive bar.

Mossuto's in Wall has a lovely selection of jarred olives.

Where is the best cannoli in Monmouth County?

LaRosa's Italian Bakery in Shrewsbury
Ferrucci's in Little Silver

Place to watch the superbowl

Charley's, Long Branch
D'Arcy's, Bradley Beach
Sallee Tee's Monmouth Beach

Where can I buy Honeybell oranges in NJ?

Confirmed. Sickles has them for $1.99 per pound.

Disappointed by Nicholas

Of course some requests are hard to accommodate. Is it a tall order to simply answer a regular customer's request in a timely manner? It's not as if only one phone call or email were not returned. Seal was strung along for months. That's just plain rude.

Disappointed by Nicholas

Welcome to Chowhound, bones. I look forward to hearing more about your meals at Nicholas. Wish I could dine there twice a month rather than two or three times per year.

Za reopening

=mark: points for trying...

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 1st quarter 2012 [old]

TJ's Gyoza dipping sauce goes perfectly with their potstickers. Delish!

Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fries coming to Red Bank

Jeez. The burger joints are soon going to outnumber the amount of Italian restaurants in this area!

Moving to Long Branch- Where to eat??

A friend just told me that El Rancho is no longer honoring Restaurant.com certificates. They were no signs posted about the change and they were quite nasty about it.

Guess we've brought them so much business that they no longer need the promotion.

Where can I buy Honeybell oranges in NJ?

Sickles in Little Silver probably has them.

Blue Water Seafood - Red Bank

Keeping the thread alive. A friend recently told me that she has been loving this place. Has anyone dined here recently?

Anyone ever try the Navesink Fishery?

I too have been very satisfied with Lusty's oysters.

Anyone ever try the Navesink Fishery?

Second the grouper francaise. The portion is large enough that I bring home half for the next day. Yes, it's delicious the next day too.

Sea Bright Pizza - are they reopening?

It really is the best in this area.

They moved one door down to a stone storefront.
