lunch in or around Sacto -- not burgers 'n fries, please

If you want Vietnamese that is not the usual pho but very good- Quan Nem Ninh Hoa restaurant off Stockton Blvd. They have really delicious rolls and other goodies like Banh Beo. When my stepdad comes to town from the east coast, he always wants to eat there.

Birthday dinner in Sacramento

Since you were not impressed with Ella, that is off the list. Grange is okay, I don't care for the food. 13 is good but I don't know if it is special enough. Enotria can be touch and go. I thought it was good but my good friend got horrible service where the server didn't know anything about the food and so so food. I haven't been to Hawks yet. Ambiance would fit the bill of special (don't let location put you off).

To throw it out there, why not drive the hour and go into the Napa Valley for a special dinner, There is a plethora of not stiff but super nice restaurants to choose from, in fact you could make a day out of it. Bottega and Redd come to mind.

This foodie just moved from NYC area to Sacramento and needs help!

Here is a post that discusses some great restos

Sacramento's strengths are the freshness of the food. Have you checked out the Sunday Farmers' market under the freeway? Also we are only 1 hour -ish away from the Napa Valley and SF for super world class food. I just went to Ad Hoc for brunch on Sunday and it was a super easy drive.

Just up the street from you is El Rey Azeteca, the food is tasty and their salsa bar is great. Also you can get a great smoked chicken and sides at El Pollo Feliz.

Downtown/Midtown Sacramento Restaurants

My favorites are Tuli bistro and Magpie Cafe. I actually like them better than Waterboy. For small plates, I would recommend Press Bistro. I do like Ella, but haven't been there since they changed chefs. Spataro was solid. Other places that are spoken highly of are Firehouse, Biba's. I didn't like Grange at all. Lots to try out. Good luck.

Black watermelons at Raley's $2.98 - Amazing find (I think)

Just bought one at my Raley's after reading this and eating it right now. It is like those Dulcinea Pure heart baby watermelons but tastier and bigger. The deep red color reminds me of old school seeded watermelons. Thanks for the tip.

Almost calorie-free savory snacks? Quitting smoking.

What about popcorn? You can either pop the corn with little oil or get the lowfat microwave kind and add spice blends and maybe a light sprinkling of grated hard cheeses like parmesan. You have to eat a lot of popcorn to get a lot of calories. It really gives your mouth something to do.

Heading to Sacramento - where to eat?

Magpie Cafe would be great. Great food local to the area, good prices, good service and next to other places that you guys could go after dinner. I also like Tuli bistro for this also. Both of these places source their food from local growers.

Only thing is you didn't say where you were staying.

What is this utensil?

That is awesome. Thank you so much.

What is this utensil?

More details. Both edges are knife sharp, The serrated edges are sharp too. I put the blackberry in the picture to give sense of scale.
The writing on it says:
A.B. Ferrator
Stainless Steel
Made in Sweden

What is this utensil?

My MIL found this in her kitchen. It kind of reminds me of something you would use to eat crab with but I have no clue what the serrrated edges would be used for.

One Sandwich for Every American City

I remember getting banh mi sandwiches in San Jose in the early eighties as a child. I remembered that I didn't like the way they smelled and wish we could have sandwiches from TOGO's instead.

Has anyone grown Kaffir lime plant/tree?

I believe the max height is 5 ft. My little guy is about 2 1/2 ft tall and I keep him pretty pruned so it looks bushy and not spindly. My pot is about 24 inches wide. Sounds like this tree will work for your HOA.

Has anyone grown Kaffir lime plant/tree?

I have a kaffir lime tree growing in a pot right now. I live in Sacramento. It is beautiful little tree and currently has little blossoms and lots of fresh growth right now. I am fertilizing it every month because it is the growing season. I don't know how citrus does in NC. You should get one if it is available. Like most citrus, they require full sun.

Bonne Maman Tartelettes in LA?

Have you checked your nearest Cost Plus World Market? I have bought them there before but that was a few years ago.

Only in California? A cancer warning on my new coffee mug

It could be lead based glaze on the mug. I bought this balsamic vinegar at Whole Foods only a couple months ago and I was just about to open it up when i looked at the back and it had that warning on it for lead in the glass container. I also have seen that sign at the dinnerware section of Target for lead in the glaze. I am already dumb don't need lead to make me dumber.

5 days in Portland for burntout restaurant folk

Just got back to Sac from Portland just a few hours ago and the thing that we loved that we couldn't get in Sac were the huge plethora of food carts and the variety of them. Unlike in CA, where the food carts move from location to location, these food carts stay in the same place.

Our faves were Nong's Khao Man Gai for chicken rice, Whiffies for fried pies, and the porchetta sandwich from People's Pig.

www.foodcartsportland.com is an excellent resource for the food carts and what they serve and their locations. I also did searches on this forum and took notes. Good luck and wear elastic pants.

ChemoHounding

+1 for this topic. It does bring so many memories back. When my stepdad AKA My Extra Dad was undergoing chemo and radiation, my mother had taken time so much making calorie dense food for him such as soups and some of the same things others have mentioned. Unfortunately for us we were the ones eating it not him. He ended up not only with the fatigue and nausea but ulcers that encompassed his entire mouth and throat making swallowing anything impossible including water. He ended up with a NG tube, which was a blessing because he could just syringe the 500 calorie Ensure-like product 4-5 times at day and water to maintain his energy without the pain. We also added additional Omega 3-6-9 oil to that.

Before the ulcers came, ice cream was the only thing he wanted to eat. So we bought the most calorie dense we could find and mixed some protein powder in. Carbs are great but protein is what our bodies use to heal.

In my personal experience when feeding someone under going treatment, it is getting the most bang for your buck because they might not be interested in eating a lot. My mother and I came up with an order of operations. Most calorie dense first, if that is consumed, then the fluff.

My thoughts are with anyone having to undergo treatment. Stay strong. My Extra Dad is still cancer free over 5 years after treatment.

Allergic to gorgonzola cheese

My husband has a penicillin allergy and ergo he is allergic to many cheeses. He can have a small amount but too much and he breaks out in a rash. I agree with jules with trying other cheeses.

Haunted Restaurants?

We ate at the Asylum a couple years ago and yes the place does feel creepy. I went to the ladies room and it was painted 1950 mental hospital lime green and I swear there was definitely a "presence" in there. In fact the whole town of Jerome has a creepy feel.

Lemon leaves

When I was growing up I remembered it was hard for my mom to get kaffir lime leaves so she used lemon leaves instead. If you do make sure you use young and tender leaves and chiffonade very finely. I have a kaffir lime tree now so I can use the leaves for cooking anytime I need to.

Just Desserts 6: I want a retraction

I did like her in the beginning but Heather needs to go or at least get an attitude adjustment. I feel like she is a sore loser even when she is in the top three.

Boo too on Erica going home. The judges could seriously say her dessert, while it wasn't the tastiest, was worse than Danielle's? Who made pedestrian number cookies that didn't even layer together as a true plated dessert.

Chicken Skin Candy ... get it now, all the kids are doing it!

I wonder if you put the skins on a bed of hot rock salt and cooked them that way, how that would be? or would they pick up too much salt?

Tomato fruit eating critter

That is hilarious and just what I would do too. You figure if the little squirrel enjoyed the lettuce so much that he should just have it. It is like a bird feeder.

Road tripper needs Veg grub suggestions in CO, WY, UT, and ID

As someone who lived in WY just a few months ago, if you want to travel through WY in Dec

1. have winter survival kit in car. This means water, candles, blankets, clothes, food, tow rope, de-icer fluid rated -25, kitty litter or sand, and snow shovel. NOT A JOKE. Wyoming has huge distances between towns and if a storm hits you will have to be able to survive in car until someone comes and gets you.

2. Plan extra travel days in case storm is coming and you should just stay in town until storm passes.

3. Ideally never let gas tank get 1/2 empty in WY. Gas is in towns that are few and far between. When I lived there out nearest town over 1000 people was 70 miles away and that was on interstate 90.

The weather can change so fast. I don't mean to scare but just be prepared.

Now about food. The others were right bring a good size cooler and pack food you bought in Fort Collins, there is a nice Whole Foods there and lots of other options. Wyoming is a chain restaurant waste land and a meat and potatoes place. Let's just say the whole time we lived there, I didn't know anyone who was a vegetarian.

If you want to stop in Cheyenne, I suggest the Little America. Nothing decent that isn't fried or starchy for a veg to eat but nice place to stop.

There is lots of good food options outside WY so just plan accordingly.

Our friends used to joke that whenever we decided to leave town and go down to CO for a weekend it would almost guarantee a snow storm.

Just Desserts Episode 4: High drama

maybe she expected him to tell the judges that she did the centerpiece and IIRC when he didn't she felt that she was not given due credit.

Along the same vein, what about a miso and honey?
