Last Dinner at Magnolia Grill
Tonight we had our last meal at Magnolia Grill and I can sum of the dinner experience in one sentence. It is all about the food.
We have been promising our 10 year old daughter for the longest time that we would take her for dinner there one day. Well, it was either tonight or never. I am still not sure what I enjoyed more -my food or her reaction to her meal.
For appetizers my wife and daughter each ordered the grits souffle, my wife still refers to it as the best food item she has ever put into her mouth. I ordered the soft shell crabs. As always the grits was excellent, and what I was able to eat of the soft shell crabs was truly great. What I was able to eat is due to my daughter stealing half it from me. The crab was perfectly fried and the slaw served with it was just the ideal accompaniment.
For my daughter's main she ordered the pork chop, I ordered the short ribs and my wife the grouper. Once again everything was perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious. I always thought that one of their greatest strengths was how they paired sides to the protein in their mains and tonight was no exception.
Since tonight was our last time we decided to splurge on the calories and each of us had our own dessert. I had a goat cheese panna cottta that was simply divine and oh so light. My wife's chocolate chip pound cake and my daughter's chocolate waffles were also great.
I am so going to miss this place. I have never been served anything there that was not well executed. I have also never been there without seeing Ben Barker in the kitchen. I will miss his dedication to quality and continued service in the kitchen when so many chef/owners have left the kitchen to become "restauranteurs".
Thank you for many wonderful years, Ben and Karen Barker and staff.

Tilted Kilt
Wow, just checked out their site, replacing the L of their name with another T, would be more descriptive.
Visiting vineyards in Israel
I will be in Israel this Summer and wanted to visit some wineries, any recommendations on good ones to tour.
Natural Flavor Bacon Salt is now available pareve
It is great to add to items like potato salad and even do a mock German Potato Salad. Have also used it to make a fake spaghetti carbonara using only egg cheese olive oil and bacon salt.
Real kosher (lamb) bacon
I just made a batch and used a pork bacon recipe out of Ruhlman's Cook Book. I used lamb flap or lamb belly and because it was a lot thinner then it's pork counterpart it was over cured and why too salty. Next time I will cut back on the cure time by a few days.
Under the salt there was a nice lamb flavor and nice smokiness from the cherry wood smoke. I am planing on using to make pasta sauces that require bacon such as amatriciana or as a seasoning in cooking vegetables.
Magnolia Grill in Durham is Closing
This also explains why they were not participating
Is there any source for Kishka made with beef intestine?
That is how it looks to me. Reading another posting on the FDA site indicates that only a section of the small intestine can transmit Mad Cow. The new regulation allows for removal of that section.
Please remember that this is my lay interpretation of the information I found and in no way am I an expert.

And, I think it was originally done due to Mad Cow

I e-mailed and received a response, there was nothing listed about financial need, only about your commitment to sustainable local agriculture. I decided that I am truly not in need financially only resistant to the price increase, and have decided to skip the event this year.
While in principle I believe in the idea of eating locally grown food, in reality I realize that it is a luxury for many Americans.
Molten chocolate cake for Shabbos evening
The tubs and the sticks will have a different water content, this can affect the recipe.
BBQ IN NC
Not the Eastern v Western thing again, you sound just like the ex NYC folk who complain about bad bagels.
BBQ IN NC
Most of whats listed is good, the top ones to try would be
Allan & Son's (the one listed and not the one near pittsboro)
Lexington #1 for western carolina style (not on the list but should be)
Skylight in Ayden, a bit of a drive for you.
While Hursey's is close they are not one of the best.
BBQ IN NC
NC is a big state, where are you planning on being and how far are you willing to drive. This is a good place to start.

Restaurants in Durham?
In all the years I have been going to MG only once did they not have my first choice. And, have always found the food to be wonderful never mediocre. Just curious, but what Durham restaurants do you enjoy.
best BBQ in Raleigh NC
Skylight is some of the best BBQ I had in state, but I don't know what to make of that cornbread. I love that you see the guy chopping in the window as people order. Is B's BBQ open on Monday? If so that may be a good bet also very good but better choice of sides.
Sangria made with Kesser...is it possible?
If you want to give it a kick you can always add some slivovitz
AdinaA-- Blue eggs :)
You only get the large splotches when you have a Rooster, Cappucino your grandmother must have had one, many of todays backyard chicken crowd don't. Crowing at day break doe's not make neighbors happy.

diverting to the greenville area might be an idea you have skylight and B's there
AdinaA-- Blue eggs :)
Also, our chickens lay Brown Eggs, we rarely see a blood spot. We do see the protein spot that the article talks about and that many confuse with blood spots.
