December Visit- Steakhouse and Brunch Recommendations

I've really enjoyed brunch at Summer House and the Publican. Both take reservations.

Fabulous! Thanks, Beach Chick. We've done Talavera a few times before and always had a nice enough time. I know it's going to sound weird but after spending the entire day at the pool, we prefer to leave the resort for dinner in the evenings.

My husband and I are heading to the Four Seasons Scottsdale in 9 days. It's been two years since we've been back. Any fantastic new spots we should consider? We prefer eating casual, small portions that pack a big punch.

You went to Proof 5 years ago?? That's incredible because it's only been around for 1 1/2 years.

I stay at the Four Seasons yearly. It's not too difficult to drive into town for dinner. Some of favorites have been Citizen Public House, Roaring Fork for happy hour, Beckett's Table, and St. Francis.

Talavera is good... just not awesome or innovative. The views are spectacular though.

Florida foodies visit Chicago for the first time!

I would add Tanta to your list. It was easily one of the best meals we've ever had. The peruvian food was exciting and incredibly flavorful. Every bite was delicious!
I think Girl and The Goat is fantastic! It sits up there with Tanta as one of the best meals ever.
Other places my husband and I have enjoyed enough to recommend...
Au Cheval for the most amazing tasty burger you'll ever have. We order it with the bacon and egg.
Doughnut Vault for the best doughnut in the states. However, once they sell out, they close.
Publican is wonderful for Sunday brunch. Great atmosphere and food.
Lou Malnatis has the most enjoyable chicago style pizza, in my opinion. You must remember to order the butter crust, though. It makes a huge difference.
For Mexican street food, we love Xoxo. It's a super casual place that offers take out by Rick Bayless/Frontera.

The portions at most of these places are quite generous. My husband and I normally share a couple of items. It's still plenty of food and helps keep our cost of eating out down.

We had a meal at Hot Chocolate, including dessert. Dinner and the hot chocolate were wonderful. The $13 dessert... not so much. I know she's a James Beard award winner and people feel her desserts are incredible. I was completely underwhelmed. Maybe the price point had something to do with it.

New Scotches at TJs

I bought one of the 23 yo bottles last night. Opened it last night. I'm glad I grabbed a bottle. They had just put it out earlier in the day and there were only 3 left on the shelf. It's incredibly smooth and a great buy at $40.

Who's been to Eataly?

The good...try the gelato. the cheese selection is wonderful. as is the dried pasta selection.
The bad...It's very busy! And the staff needs a lot more training. They are like deer in headlights.

Back for a visit -- new places to try?

Everything we tried is bursting with flavor. No subtlety at all.

Niguiris nikei pobre... skirt steak, quail egg, chalaca, ponzu. Best thing I've ever eaten!!
Causitas clasica... crab, avocado, tomato, egg, huancaina Super duper tasty. It's served cold.
Pulpo... Tender, grilled octopus with potato and a variety of sauces. Simply incredible!
Chaufa Aeropuerto... pork fried rice, shrimp tortilla, spicy garlic. Deliciously rich and heavy.

I also thought the Chupe traditional was good. It's a peruvian stew with prawns, potatoes, and peruvian corn. I thought it was delicious. My husband thought it was good but not awesome.

For dessert... Los Picarones... traditional warm pumpkin and sweet potato fritters, spiced syrup. These were quite tasty and worth trying if you have room.

Help...need ideas for one or two bite appetizers for Christmas Party

I'm hosting a cocktail party this holiday season. I, too, tried to choose items I can make in advance. Here's what is on my menu.
Gougeres (cheese puffs) and mushroom puffs... I've already made these... frozen & waiting.
Little links wrapped in puff pastry, sausage stuffed mushrooms...made in advance and baked the day of.
Blue cheese shortbread with fig preserves, black pepper parmesan biscotti... made 3 days in advance.
I'm also putting out a cheese plate and holiday cookies.

Back for a visit -- new places to try?

Longman & Eagle is wonderful for brunch. Publican is another winner for brunch. Au Cheval's burger is the best in the city. I've also enjoyed my meals at Little Goat. It's not as fancy as Girl and the Goat but still super tasty.

Hoosier Mama has the best pie, imho. I've tried Bang Bang but prefer Hoosier Mama for their flavors.

If the weather warms up a tiny bit, give Doughnut Vault a try. Weekdays are better than weekends. And it's best to get there early because once they sell out, they close.

One last suggestion... Tanta. It's the new Peruvian restaurant that has opened up. It's incredible.

Out-of-towners visiting in November...recs/advice?

Publican is fantastic... especially for brunch. Au Cheval has the most incredible burger in town or anywhere for that matter. Tanta is a new peruvian restaurant. Food is incredible and different. If you get to Frontera 30 minutes before they open, you'd probably get in with the first seating. Makes the wait a lot more tolerable. However, I much prefer the more casual Xoco two doors down. Great spot for lunch. Speaking of casual, I also really enjoy Little Goat. It's been great every time I've gone.

Labor Day Weekend Chi-Town Line up

Just to add to everyone's recommendations... For a burger, you must go to Au Cheval. Best burger anywhere, not just in chicago. Brunch... Longman and Eagle is fantastic! Little Goat is good too. Go early to avoid the insane wait.

Need Easter Brunch Suggestions

Thanks ttoo! I saw the opentable list.
Since I'm Greek orthodox, I don't celebrate Easter that weekend. So I'm not particularly looking for an "Easter" brunch. Really was hoping for an amazing breakfast place that would be open. Obviously being able to make reservations is best, but I'm open to other options too. I've read so much about Clinton St. Baking Co. I called and found out they are open. I'm a bit afraid of how busy they will be but I might make a go of it. We love pancakes!

Need Easter Brunch Suggestions

I'm taking my husband to NYC to celebrate his 40th. It also happens to be Easter Weekend. I had made a reservation via opentable for Rubirosa but they called the other day and canceled. They said they will be closed on Easter Sunday. So, back to the drawing board.
Can anyone suggest some place that will for sure be offering Easter brunch?

Surprise trip for husbands 40th

Kathryn,
Do you think MoMa will be too busy? Should I save it for Saturday?
It's good to know about EMP and special occasions. I have made a saturday evening res at JungSik f for now.
I'd still like to try for EMP and will decide when and if I get a reservation. It's 28 days out at 9am eastern time, right?

I don't have the most sophisticated palate but I know when I love something. So I really appreciate your feedback. Plus, I didn't realize how close JungSik was to where we're staying. I love after dinner walks.

Surprise trip for husbands 40th

Funny enough, we don't dine out very often here at home. We save it for traveling. I guess it's a bit shameful since we live in such a great city.
I had a reservation once at Schwa but had it canceled on me which put a bad taste in my mouth. Last year for his birthday, I took him to Avec which we enjoyed. We've frequented Frontera and Xoco many times over the last few years due to multiple trips to the Merchandise Mart. But other than that, nothing else that I can list to influence suggestions.

Surprise trip for husbands 40th

Hi everyone!
I thought I could do this on my own this time, but I can't. I'm once again overwhelmed and need your help.

I'm surprising my husband with a trip to NYC (his first) for his 40th in April. I've already booked the Andaz Wall Street. I'm not concerned with distances to restaurants. We are coming from Chicago, getting in around lunch time on Friday and leaving Sunday afternoon. His birthday is on Saturday. Even though we aren't big eaters, I have a tendency to over plan meals. With a goldfish mentality, we can easily over eat and feel crappy the rest of the day.

Friday afternoon, I was thinking we go to MOMA and then going to the Bar Room afterwards.

When I was in NYC last summer with my sister, we went to WD-50 and had a good time. My husband loves the whole molecular gastronomy movement so I thought about taking him there. However, reading all your amazing reviews and looking at your pictures, I was thinking of trying to get reservations at EMP for his birthday lunch or dinner. I also keep coming across posts about Junsik which looks amazing. Looks like I can get a reservation there for Saturday evening.
Since we are light eaters, I was planning we do one big meal on Saturday, either lunch or dinner. Can't squeeze in both without popping a couple buttons.

We enjoy big flavors, unpretentious ambiance, and less formal is better. At the same time, I'd like to choose something he will remember forever. Something he'll be blown away by. I know what I am asking is subjective. I've just been going in circles this last week and don't know my head from my... well, you know. So, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I also want to try to squeeze in a visit to Shake Shack, Donut Plant, and Spot, Chickalicious, or Milk Bar... you know, for dessert.

Dinner in Yorkville/Geneva Area

I used to live in the area... here are a couple suggestions.
There is Francesca's in St. Charles. Food is consistently good and there is something for everyone. Plus, children won't be out of place. Plus, they take reservations.
I also really like Bien Trucha in Geneva. I've seen children there, so that shouldn't be an issue. However, the waits can be ridiculously long.

Planning our yearly trip to AZ

We got back last week from our 6 days in AZ. It was so unbearably hot during our stay that we had to push dinner reservations to a later time than we normally eat... simply to try and avoid some of it. Overall, even with temps over 110, we had an amazing time!

Here is where we ate...
When we got off the plane,we had Brunch at The Mission It was wonderful, though a little pricey. The pork was so amazing, we considered going back for dinner one night even though we both hate repeating. That evening, still full from brunch, we went out for ice cream to Sweet Republic. Wow! Best ice cream we've had. We had the White roses and fresh strawberry flavors. Together, they reminded us of this pastry we had in Paris.

The next night we went to Cowboy Ciao. What can we say? It was good... but since it was a repeat from the previous year, we were a bit bored.

On Tuesday evening, we decided to go to Beckett's Table. This was our best meal in AZ this year. From the biscuits to the green chili pork to the mac and cheese... everything was fabulous! And dessert was not only delicious but memorable too. We tried the pecan pie and the chocolate bacon smores! My husband is still talking about the chocolate covered bacon.

Wednesday evening, we canceled our res at Citizen and decided to trek out to Pizzaria Bianco. We walked in and got a table right away. If I had waited for a table, I would've been very unhappy with the meal. But considering we got a table right away, I found the pizza's to be decent enough. Worth $16? No. Actually, now that we've tried it, we aren't quite sure what all the hype is about.

On Thursday, my husband wanted more green chili pork so we found ourselves at St. Francis. We had the pork and the Moroccan meatballs. We arrived right at the end of Happy Hour and were given HH menus. However, when our server finally came around, he said, as he took the HH menu off our table, "HH is over, sorry". We understood but it left us with a bad taste in our mouth, none the less. We found the food we tried to be tasty. And if you can get past the cool people sit down stairs, and the uncool upstairs, it's worth a visit. Oh, the bread was good too. I was tempted to grab a baguette for the trip home the next day.
