Favorite Chocolate Bar

Oh man, I've been wishing for a dark chocolate Almond Joy forever. It seems like such a no-brainer! What's taking them so long? I even wrote them requesting that in the 80's. Got a form letter back saying something like thanks for your interest-- we're always developing new products and that may or may not be one of them. But now when dark chocolate is hotter than ever, why aren't they?

Doylestown-Breakfast

I'd say give Cross Keys Diner another try. The food is really, really good. They're serious food people. They smoke their own meats and use real butter (a little too much of it, maybe) and have excellent specials.

Down To Earth Cafe in Perkasie- sigh, shrug

Another annoying thing there is that they don't post the prices for any of the specials on the board. Service is slow, too. And it's very cold and drafty in there! I still wish the food were better, but some of it's good. The owner seems decidedly non-pro, though nice and well meaning. Hey, howcome this thread isn't on the Philadelphia board? Anything else I can gripe about?!

Food Terminology that makes you CRAZY!!

Ditto ditto "cooked to perfection". Ditto "gourmet", whether on a label or not. Also "touch of...", as in some sauce or other (I'm talking lousy places in the 'burbs) having a "touch of butter" (when you know it's some version of a beurre blanc). Why not just say "ton of butter" instead?

Montco or Bucks Local Ice Cream

I've been there a lot of times. It's a wonderful place. Not all the flavors have the perfect balance in my opinion-- some are too weakly flavored, but if I were grading the place (sorry-- used to teach), I'd give it an A minus or an A. That's still pretty damned good.

Is White Horse scotch available to you?

I don't know- haven't had it years, and that's because the quality really declined, so I moved away from it. I thought maybe my taste had changed, but then I got an old bottle from someone whose husband had died- his stash, and it was much better. Not worth seeking in my opinion. It did come with a cute little white horsey around the neck, though. I used to collect them as a kid (my father drank it).

Where in brooklyn should we stay (for good food)?

Hi- we're from the Philadelphia area. We have a gift certificate good at a bunch of B&Bs. We don't really know Brooklyn, but we know there's a LOT of good food there. We have a choice of different areas of Brklyn, but where to go? We tend to like downscale but very good food places. We're old hippies. What's a cool area? We love good good and music and nice, downscale atmosphere. Thank you!!

It's so bad... and I love it!

McDonalds once in a while for a hamburger and a small fries. I love those skinny fries out of the little paper bag when they're hot and fresh and crisp with just the right amount of salt....

Black Sesame and Mustard Popcorn

Hey, you know what's another nice thing to do with flavored popcorns like these? After you mix the popped corn with butter and flavorings, put it in a shallow pan in a low oven for 20 minutes or so, stirring often. That way you still have the butter flavor, but it dries out the popcorn, making it crisper and less greasy on your hands.

Looking for a retro cocktail book

+2 on Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails. I am a novice, though, so I don't know the majority of what's out there. I do know that I'm having a whole lot of fun with it, trying many of the drinks. I like his taste, and it's great to learn of new-to-me ingredients and then track some of them down. It's a nice-looking book too, and has lots of photos of cocktail accoutrements and memorabilia.

Nice breakfast at Domani Star in Doylestown

I don't know if it's new for them or if I just discovered it, but it's a nice brunch place. The coffee is good and strong, it's cozy and bright in there, and the omelettes and other options were good. I had an omelette with tomatoes, goat cheese, avocado, and baby arugula. My dining companion had a special ham hash with eggs on top. If I hadn't had what I did have, I'd've had the "eggs in purgatory", which I think was eggs cooked in tomato sauce with parmesan and maybe another cheese on top. They have healthful options like egg whites, oatmeal, and half a grapefruit. Prices were I think $5.95 or so for eggs with toast and home fries, and the other egg dishes were $9.95.

Down To Earth Cafe in Perkasie- sigh, shrug

Givemecarbs, unfortunately you missed out on a whole wonderful incarnation of Cross Keys. After Charlotte there was Terry (not good), and after that (around 12, 13 years ago) it was sold and reopened as Cross Keys Diner. THAT was some wonderful food. A year or two ago those owners sold it and now it's still really good, but not exactly the same. I recommend the cornmeal buttermilk pancakes and whatever else strikes your fancy.
About Down To Earth, I've been there a bunch of times now and it's a nice option for once in a while, but I wish the food were just a little better.

Maize Restaurant in Perkasie

Ha! I thought the same thing when I saw the menu. That one made me laugh out loud, but who cares (if the food's good)? It's not like we have that many good places around here. Maybe they're pretentious and out-of-date/ out-of-synch with their town ("Maize"???), but food is the important thing.

Where can I find fresh tamarind?

Hmmm.. I was going to suggest those places, since I've seen it there before. You might try another Asian or Hispanic market if there is one near you. If that fails, since it's for chutney (which is generally cooked to a semi-mush anyway), might you be able to use one of those tamarind bricks of compressed flesh and seeds? Might be easier to find.

Copper Leaf Grill (ex-Just Eat By Brown Gold)--Buckingham

I'm glad to hear that it sounds good so far. I can't not comment on your saying that the grill chef will need to learn to determine doneness without touching food on the grill. As far as I know, that IS how you determine doneness on the grill. He could wear a glove, though, so it looks better.

Havana in New Hope - Impressions? Recommendations?

If you want to sit outside in NH, I'd recommend Wildflowers or even John and Peters. I know they don't have great food, but it's not bad, and Wildflowers has a lovely atmosphere under the trees there and a good soundtrack, while John and Peters has a good people-watching spot. Neither one breaks the bank, which is more than I can say for Karla's.

Cote and Company Doylestown

I don't really know, but I was in there around a month ago and there was a LOT less on the shelves, and they'd made the shop area smaller. It didn't look good. Then last Friday I happened to be passing by and saw that Saturday was going to be their last day. Does anyone know what the old owner, Brian, is doing now?
