good brunch near the Embarcadero
My friend and I are looking for a good brunch place before we hit up the Ferry Building Farmer's Market this Saturday. Any suggestions in that area? Thanks.
East Bay Restaurants: please help me expand my eating ways
maybe they realized they needed to bring their prices down to get more butts in the seats. With the quality of food that runs up and down Shattuck, they needed to do something! Go there and enjoy.
East Bay Restaurants: please help me expand my eating ways
If I remember correctly, we were comparing it to Le Liason and a Tapas place up the street from Downtown, and Downtown had the best prices hands down. I think my lamb dish was in the $15 range. Yes, I just checked the menu, it was the Lemon Thyme Papardelle with braised lamb for $15.50 and it was OUTSTANDING. We were there later in the evening, so our server wasn't too busy and we got great service.

I had a great dinner a couple of months ago at "Downtown" on Shattuck in Berkeley. Not too expensive, great service and really good tasting food. I had a lamb and fava bean stew and my bf had a spectacular steak. Give it a try.
Suggestions for Chocolate Tour?
It took us a while and we wound up taking a cab to Northbeach where we sat and had some lunch and then a bus to Union Street. The Ferry building downtown area took us about 2 or three hours. (we windo shopped along the way)
Suggestions for Chocolate Tour?
I did a chocolate walking tour 6 months ago through San Francisco. Here were our stops...
Ferry Plaza - Ricchutti - REALLY good chocolates and truffles, tasting, little sample boxes.
Scharffenberger - Just ok, I didn't buy much of anything there.
Fog City news - My friends didn't know about this place! Chocolate Bar Heaven!
Teucher - on Sutter near stockton - Just ok, definitely not worth it for the price.
Richart - on the same block of Sutter - Exquisite boxes of handpainted truffles. Theyy come in boxes of "fruit" "Tea" "Spices" etc flavors. Not cheap, but absolutely beautiful.
XOX - By far our favorite stop on our tour. Get a coffee, you get a sample and 20piece boxes for only $8. My friends liked the quality if chocolate and flavor the most.
Cocoa Bella on Union - We were a little chocolate-ed out at this point, but the selection was fantastic, although the service was very slow.
Other places you may want to try -
Moonstruck Chocolates on Union St.
Five Star Chocolates on Divisadero at Oak - Santos th owner used to work at XOX and now has his own store, great coffee too.
I hope that helps. :)
"Only in San Francisco" Restaurants
I second or third Burma Superstar. I've taken visitors there and they LOVED it. Also, for a more upscale experience, try Harry Denton's Starlight room. Located downtown, at the top of a hotel (I can't remeber which one) you can get coctails, food and some dancing in. No sneakers allowed though.
Yellow tomatoes!
Also, try finding a tomato bisque recipe.
Personally, I like slicing them up, getting some really good mozerella cheese and balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper and basil and making a caprese salad. There's NOTHING like a good tomato. Mmmmmmmm.
Fish tacos in SF
I have no idea about the quality at this place, because I've never had a fish taco anywhere else, but they have good fish tacos at a place called Amante's in Northbeach. You can sit at the bar and have a coctail and two fish tacos (made with shredded cabbage) for $8 or $9. Amante's is on Green between Grant and Columbus
Looking for a great cake in SF proper
The Saint Honore cake fromVictoria Pastry Company in Northbeach is wonderful. It has cream puffs and custard and strawberries and a fluffy cake with flaky cake layers to serparate everything. It is very good!
Top 5
Ok, here are MY top five. A few in my neighborhood, go figure.
1. Mamma's - the best darn breakfast you'll ever wait in line for. Shrimp benedict, cinnamon chocolate french toast, nelson's rancheros. YUM! But seriously, there's always a line. Just bring a newspaper or chat it up with people in line. On Francisco and Stockton in Northbeach
2. Sodini's - American Italian food, run by Native San Franciscans, delicious food. "No reservations, no decaf and no dessert" is their Motto.Their seafood linguini is GOOD. On the corner of Grant and Green streets, also in Northbeach.
3. The House - insane asian fusion food. Search them out on this site for more reviews. On Grant and Vallejo, I think. In Northbeach.
4. Burma Superstar - yes, I get out of my neighborhood sometimes - see above recommendation..... try the tea leaf salad and the sambusa soup.
5. Pancho Villa - burritos the size of your head. 16th between Mission and Valencia.
I hope this helps!
Baby/Toddler friendly restaurant near Ft. Mason
There is a good place in Fort Mason calles Greens which is a vegetarian and oh-so-tasty.
You may also want to try along chestnut street. There's a place on the corner of Fillmore and Chestnut called Circa which may be good, although I've never been.
Recommendation for dinner - SF - 12 people
Il Fornio could do a good dinner for a group your size in your price range. good Italian food, and located just at the base of Telegraph Hill near the Embarcadero. 986-0100
how to make pulled pork?
HI all. I'm interested in finding a recipe for pulled pork. Does anyone have an especially good one? Can I make it in a crockpot?
sears fine food or mama's on washington square for breakfast??
I wholeheartedly recommend Mamma's instead of Sears. I've been to Sears twice and the last time we got seated in the very un-charming lower-level, it took 10 minutes to get anyone to pay attentions to us, they had the music playing so loud I couldn't hear my boyfriend from accross the table and the food was really bad.
On the other side of the spectrum, we go to Mamma's all the time. We've never had anything bad to eat there, enjoy chatting with people in line and enjoy the friendly service. Try the special shrimp benedict with avocado and grilled tomatoes, or the pancakes, or the nelson's rancheros. The cinnammon chocolate french toast is also especially good. The blueberry coffee cake, mmmm mmm. I'm getting hungry.......
best (lower cost) vietnamese in/around SF?
You'll have to adventure into the Tenderloin, but it is well worth it... Bodega Bistro on Larkin street (at O'Farrell?). They have great Bun.
Also, try Bodhi, on Valencia between 13th and 14th. I've only been there for lunch, but the food is fresh and very good.
Kennedy's Irish Pub and Curry House
I think their Vegetable Korma and lamb curry is good.
Workday lunch places near Pier 39?
There is a new cafe on Mason and Chestnut, I don't know the name but they have lunchtime sandwiches and curbside seating. There's also Il Fornio across from Fog City Diner, a lot of the business people from LEvi Plaza go there. If you want to go for a longer walk, try Kennedy's on Columbus and Taylor (an Irish Pub and Curry house combined). They have a good lunchtime Indian buffet for not too expensive.
Impressing our Spaniard Guests
Do you think they would like French Basque tapas? If so, try Illuna Basque. I haven't been in quite a while but I remember it being oh-so-good.
New Guy Knows Nada and Needs Non-Pricy Nourishment!
Try YumYum Bangkok on 9th (and 47th?). They have a really good flat noodle with basil beef.
Also, go out on a limb and try some ethiopian food. SO GOOD, and cheap too. Meskerem on 49th and 10th ave. Try their lamb watt (a spicy-ish red sauce called berber) and don't be afraid to use you hands.
Cheap eats in NYC
I haven't been un such a tight budget since I was a student in NYC back in the mid-90's... I'm visiting NYC for a few days and need some up-to-date recommendations on some CHEAP EATS all around Manhattan. Is there anywhere good I can get out-the-door for under $10 for lunch, $20 for dinner?
Limo in Napa for 5 hours, need itinerary help!
I second staying on Silverado for the duration. Mumm is beautiful with sit down table service and a flight of full glasses for 10-15 dollars. I've also really liked Clos Du Val and my favorite is Luna Vineyards. They are all within 15 minutes driving of each other but Luna and Clos Du Val are closer to Napa and Mumm is closer to St Helena. Luna makes an excellent Cabernet and Pinot Grigio and CDV has an excellent Chardonnay.
Great Cheap Eats recommendations in SF for upcoming visitors?
Burma Superstar on Clement at 3rd Ave has great food, not too expensive and very tasty Burmese food. Try the Samusa soup and the tea leaf salad. Also, try the India Clay Oven, also in the Richmond, I think around 27th Ave and Clement. They have a luch buffet my boyfriend swears by. For Italian I would try Firenze By Night or Sodini's, both in Northbeach and good quality for not too expensive (and also not too touristy). My favorite Burrito place is El Toro on 17th and Valencia.
japanese non-sushi, non-sashimi
Ten Ichi on Fillmore and Clay have wonderful donburi, sukiyaki etc.
Dinner near Clay movie theatre on Fillmore?
I like Ten-Ichi, but 'm not sure if they're open on Mondays. There is a place accross the street called Vieni Vieni that I've heard is good.
Which of these wineries would you go to?
one more suggestion although I'm sure you're spinning... I LOVE Luna Vineyards on Silverado trail. They aren't as big and fancy as all those others, but they have very tasty wines and a few different "menus" to choose from. They're doing a Cabernet that just scored 93 points, a fantastic Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese, and they have a tower you can go up to that overlooks the valley. It is one of my faves (their wine is so good to me I joined their wine club... I'm a Lunatic!)
I have been to St Suprey witch was a little commercial and Peju. Out of the two, I liked Peju better.
Enjoy your trip!
Recs for central SF: Italian, Chinese and Seafood
Hi there,
You may want to try Firenze by Night in Northbeach, on Stockton at Columbus. They are a fun neighborhood Italian place and with a reservation could easily sit a group your size. They have great stuffed mushrooms, gnocchi, and grilled swordfish.
The Hyde Street Seafood House and Raw Bar is also good for a delicious seafood meal. I went there for the first time a couple of weeks ago and the food was great, with a wine list to match. What's so great about it is that it is in a fun, non-touristy neighborhood and easily accessible by the Hyde Street cable car line from Union Square. Then you can walk up Hyde to Union street and get some home made Swensen's ice cream. This was the origional Swensens, and they have their huge ice cream making machine in the window. (fun for kids)
Citizen Thai and the Monkey, also in Northbeach, would be large enough to seat all of you and they have great Thai food.
I also second XOX truffles in Northbeach for dessert.
Also, you may want to try the Slanted Door for some Asian Fusion food. Located in the Ferry Building, you could try to eat there for lunch and then walk along the Embarcadero to the ballpark.
nob hill dining?
Luella on Hyde is also great and tight on the cable car line. Their Coca-cola braised pork shoulder is GREAT!
