Lola attire [Cleveland]

A friend of mine ate at the chef's tasting table wearing (clean) cargo shorts and a polo shirt. It was fine.

Coming to Cleveland in May

For breakfast or lunch when you're going to the Rock Hall, try Waterstreet Grill on West 6th St. It's not walking distance, but it's downtown in the Warehouse District. http://www.wsgrill.com/WSG/WS_Main2.asp

A fun, quirky place is the Cafe at West Side Market. You can browse the market (bring home souvenir smokies).

Go to Great Lakes Brewing Co. across the street from West Side Market and have the beer sampler.

The South Side in Tremont (http://www.southsidecleveland.com/) is another fun lunch place, with a bar. For dessert, walk over to A Cookie and a Cupcake (http://www.acookieandacupcake.com/

)

If you don't mind driving out to the far 'burbs, Bubba's Q in Avon has really good barbecue (http://www.bubbasq.com/

)

Bar Cento's pizzas are the best in town. Go to Little Italy for baked goods like cassada cake.

CLEVELAND ROCKS!

I also can't recommend Hot Sauce Williams. Absolutely dreadful meat drowned in a gallon of horrible sauce, served with runny coleslaw and freezer-burned fries. If you want barbecue, drive out to Avon to Bubba's Q.

Cleveland - need suggestions

1) Lola.

2) Sokolowski's University Inn.

3) Waterstreet Grill (West 9th St.)

4) Again, Waterstreet Grill. Or Johnny Mango in Ohio City.

5) I'd say Crop Bistro, but you're going to go over $60. Other options are Lolita (Michael Symon's other restaurant) and South Side in Tremont.

The Dressing Room, Westport

We were there in March for my dad's 70th birthday. The food was wonderful, the portions generous. The service? Inattentive. We spent 10 minutes trying to flag down a staff member so Dad could get a drink. But speaking of drinks, the pomegranate-blood orange martini was amazingly good.

Next Iron Chef Finale [Spoiler inside]

I think what made the difference in the finale is that Symon ventured out of his known style - Mediterranean/Midwest - and tried different techniques and styles such as using the sous vide. Besh, however, stayed too comfortably in his French/Southern zone.

Going into the finale, I honestly thought Besh would win and that the judges were biased in his favor. His style is French, something the ICA lineup is lacking. He's telegenic and handsome. He's got the "support New Orleans" vibe going as one of the visible leaders of the dining revival in the region. Also, I think he appealed to Donatella's and Andrew's snobbery - New Orleans has cuisine in their eyes, while Cleveland does not.

But I think the right chef won. Besh was consistent, but consistently second place is still second place.

Going to a Wedding in Westlake, OH

I can vouch for Bubba's Q. Good, good stuff.

Luchita's is good for Mexican. It's about a 15-minute drive east towards Cleveland to the West 117th St. exit, then drive south less than a mile.

http://www.luchita.com/

Another good place in Swingo's Grand Tavern in Avon Lake. Their menu is reasonably priced and their wine collection impressed a wine writer I dined with.

Have fun on the visit and at the wedding!

Any must-haves/eats/trys on Cape Cod?

Just got back from a week there.

The Friendly Fisherman in Eastham has wonderful seafood in its market for you to bring home and cook. They also have an outdoor clam shack. The fried clams were the best I've ever had - sweet and so not greasy. My sister raved over the lobster roll.

Marion's Pie Shop in Chatham has delicious pies. We had their peach and razzleberry (raspberry, strawberry, apple) pies. Totally homemade and taste like yummy fresh fruit with no cloying oversweetness.

A tasty souvenir can be found at Chatham Jam and Jelly Shop - everything from the classic beach plum jelly to cranberries in habenero pepper jelly is made on-site.

CT Hound seeks I-80 road food on drive through PA

I do the trip once or twice a year, going from Cleveland to visit my family back in CT. There's not a whole lot along I-80 outside of fast food and Dutch Pantry, TravelAmerica and Buckhorns truck-stop type places.

It's more like 15-20 minutes off I-80, but Baby's in State College, PA is a nice stop. It's a retro-looking 50s-style diner with good food right off the Penn State campus.

There's a Wegmans grocery store off I-81 in Wilkes-Barre that is a nice stop for the restroom, lunch and shopping. I miss Wegmans.

Lola in Cleveland - What to Order?

I was just there this week and had the duck leg with a cherry reduction, pickled cherries and sauteed endive. Dessert was the "strawberry shortcake" - almond shortbread topped with a mascarpone/cream mix, macerated strawberries and balsamic vinegar jello. Not crazy about the balsamic jello, but appreciated the sweet/sour intention.

Best ICE CREAM in Ohio??

I'm in Northeast Ohio. The best local brands I've had are Mitchell's and Woo City. I get Graeter's at Heinen's and like that a lot, too.

New York Times article about tweaking recipes

"An utterly simple Epicurious recipe for pan-fried romaine (ingredients: romaine, olive oil, sea salt) prompted these comments: 'I like it with crumbled bleu cheese on top,' from a cook from Washington, and 'I sprinkle with freshly grated parm cheese' from a cook from Kansas City.

An equally minimalist recipe for asparagus wrapped with prosciutto from Allrecipes drew over a dozen suggestions to add cream cheese or Alouette to the mix."

It's things like this that make me scratch my head over the recipe-tweakers. Why do vegetables always have to be topped with cheese? They turn perfectly good dishes into slop worthy of "Taste of Home."

Barefoot Contessa

It was a good article. I respect the way she balances her business, her personal life and her independence. She's smart and not burning herself out chasing fame.

Help!!! Where are those mid-priced HOME COOKING GREAT Cleveland Ohio Restaurants???

Jane, I also like the Waterstreet Grill downtown on West 9th Street. Lots of well-made basics - pot roast, meatloaf, pot pies, burgers. Their chicken paprikash soup is good.

Best Hotdogs in Conn.

Oh, I miss Saints! Every Friday, my boss would say "Let us adjourn to the Sainted Venue" and we'd all troop over there for lunch. I live in Cleveland now and have to visit Saints next time I'm home.

Cleveland anyone? [Moved from General Topics]

Is Waterstreet Grille in the Warehouse District still open? That would be a good breakfast/brunch/lunch option. It's reasonably priced and the food is good.

If you want to cross the river into Ohio City, I recommend Great Lakes Brewing Co. for a beer sampler and Johnny Mango for dinner. Johnny Mango is a casual sort of place with dishes ranging from Asian- to Caribbean-influenced.
