Bistro 45 - What's going on?

Had a 7pm reservation tonight (Sunday) at Bistro 45 in Pasadena. Have never been there before, but heard good things. Showed empty - no sign, door locked, no live answer on the phone. Does anyone know if this is some type of glitch, or are they closed for good?. 2 other groups also arrived for 7pm reservations and walked away. Phone answers with recorded message, but no indication of problems.

Harrah's Range Steakhouse

I went this summer. Was very underwhelmed. The menu looked great.. We tried the crab dip with pita and soft pretzels...not much crab or taste for that matter. Steaks were just fair...not bad...just not memorable, or a quality like other steaks I've had in Las Vegas. Not nearly as good as The Palm or N9Ne (at the Palms), Capital Grille or Smith & name 4...and far below my Las Vegas favorite, Del Friscos. However, the price is just about identical ($35-$45 for a steak) a la carte sides. Service was nothing special. It does enjoy a strip view...but all I remember seeing was the buses with billboards passing by all night...and a hordes of cars and traffic. With all the great choices in town, I wouldn't make any effort to go back.

What menu items need to be retired?

The same 4 desserts on every menu...brownie sundae, apple pie variation, ice cream and cheesecake. That is the choice in nearly every Applebees/Outback/Chilis/local chain...and I TELL YOU IT'S GOT TO STOP. Bring in something original....corporate test kitchens!!!!

Dining Solo @ Caesar's

They have a bar at Mesa Grill, and while the last time I ate there it was a bit disappointing...the other 3 times were great. I'll give it a .750 batting average and suggest you give it a try. The bar at Spago was very friendly...and the service pretty good, as well as the food. Chinois in the Forum Shops (Wolfgang Puck asian) is also one of my favorites...and they have a sushi bar and a regular I've found it often not very busy, so a solo diner at a small table for 2 would work. Bring a book just watch the people.

Recs for Emeril's New Orleans Fish House (Las Vegas)

I totally disagree with the Emeril's naysayers. I can't stand Emeril's TV show, but we visit the MGM location regularly and think it is one of the best seafood restaurants on the strip. Also have enjoyed the Campfire steak with homemade Worchestershire as well. As for the best appetizers, I think it's hand down the barbequed shrimp. The sauces is very rich, smoky and complex...and the rosemary biscuit is perfect for sopping up the extra. One other nice note about Emeril's...after the disaster in New Orleans, they took care of a lot of the workers from the Lousiana location...and had them working in Las Vegas. As for the banana cream's not bad...but certainly not close to the best I've ever tasted.

Airport food

I'm a little amazed to report the best airport food I've had recently was in Detroit at a place call Mediterranean Grill. They had a fantastic Fattouch salad with Chicken that was better that any I've had IN Detroit. If you had been to Detroit Airport in the ' probably remember a grim experience, but since they've remodeled....the selection and ambience almost make up for the fact that you're probably flying Northwest Airlines.

looking for Thai in Vegas. [Moved from Chow Feedback]

Go to the Southwest Forum. Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas generally regarded as one of the best Thai restuarants in the United State.

Las Vegas gelato Ripoff - BEWARE

Great column in Saturday's Las Vegas Review Journal detailing a gelato stand in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace called Della Spiga Cafe that rips off unsuspecting tourists by charging $16,69 for a large gelato...and not showing the prices until the customer gets to the checkout.

The owner of this establishment sounds like a real slimeball. Great job by the R-J revealing this story. Maybe the store will be shamed into changing these ridiculous prices.

Smokey Bones BBQ

The one in Manchester CT (at Buckland Hills Mall). I ate there a few weeks back...not very impressive. Maybe the NE branches are staying open due to the lack of BBQ competition or perhaps long leases.

Osteria Mozza Party of 7

My advice...GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. This rigid thinking is part of the incredible arrogance of the current crop of overpriced, self important restaurants that has disregarded customer service...knowing that with the right 'buzz'...we will still patronize them. Los Angeles is a big city with lots of great restaurants...probably some undiscovered and without the baggage that Mario "TV star" and Nancy "Bread maker to the stars" Silverton bring to the table. You'll probably save some money. What do you remember from most parties..where you ate...or who you spent the time with that special night. Go somewhere else that WANTS your business. I'm sure some other lemmings will take your place at Osteria Mozza.

Anyone been to Del Frisco's Steakhouse in Las Vegas?

For my of the best Las Vegas steakhouses (even though it's a chain). My most recent visit was a 20 person 80th birthday party for my father. They could not have been nicer, terrific private room and extra service...and the food was excellent...especially the appetizers (shrimp remoulade was one of the best I've ever had) and the steaks were perfectly cooked and tasty. Also enjoyed the sides (chateau potatoes are really rich mashed potatoes...and also tried a very good version of au gratin...and the bread is very light, warm sesame seed studded goodness you rip instead of cut. It's a favorite of my parents...and we've tried The Palm, Smith & Wollensky, Morton's, N9ne, Delmonico's, Capital Grill, Charlie Palmer and Gallaghers over the years, and I would put Del Frisco's in the top 2 (N9ne may have been a bit better, but it's very close). Del Frisco's is about par for a steakhouse and Las Vegas...$40 or $50 a person w/o drinks...but certainly worth it.

Sensi, Tableau, Olive, Prime, Le Cirque, Bouloud Brasserie, and Breakfast in Vegas

Totally disagree on Olives. I'd heard all the naysayers, and even ate there a few years back for lunch and was a bit disappointed, but I ate there a few months ago and couldn't have been more pleased. Quality ingredients, intense flavors, terrific service and great extras like wonderful bread with a memorable tapenade and innovative soups and salads. I loved their lamb. It was a bit overprice, but that's Vegas.

Las Vegas Casual Business Dinner-HELP!!

Just had my Dad's 80th birthday party at Del Frisco's in Las Vegas. Excellent service, private room, they let us order off the menu but also offered to give us 2 or 3 choices. No minimum charge for our room, which was right off the main dining room. The steaks were fantastic. I think you might be able to get by on $40 per person, but it's probably gonna be a bit difficult. Certainly less than $4000. We got out with wine for about $1500 (including tip) for 18 people.

Piero's has closed???

They're not closed. I called there tonight to confirm. Piero's Trattoria (owned by Freddie Glusman's son) closed last year. The Trattoria was located close to restaurant row in Las Vegas...Piero's is by the Las Vegas Hilton.

Help!! Zankou/Garlic Sauce in Vegas???

I actually sent in a request to the Zankou website to ask if they planned to open a restaurant in Las Vegas. They said no, but the person (apparently someone named Dikran) who responded sent me this suggestion...."please check out this place in Vegas called "Daily Chicken".It's a FANTASTIC restaurant and grill that has the best chicken, kebobs , and other Zankou type stuff. It's near UNLV.Tell them Dikran sent you. will not be disappointed"
I haven't had a chance to try it...but maybe another chowhounder can give a report before I go back to Vegas in April.

Del Frisco's Chateau Potatoes....

I'm partial to the skillet potatoes with onions...plenty for 2 or even 3. Creamed spinach and sauteed mushrooms also very good. I really love the seasoning ont the steaks and the bread is terrific...seeded, hot, fresh.

Delmonico's or Emeril's?

Was just in Las Vegas last month. Went to Emeril's...was very pleased. Beautiful room...quailty food. They have what might be my favorite appetizer ever...barbequed shrimp which is topped with an incredibly smoky-rich sauce. Have been to Delmonico...good, but certainly not the best steakhouse in Las Vegas.

Jerry's Famous Deli

I know it's controversial...but I think they have terrific breakfasts. Great omelets, tasty hash browns, fresh bagels. Also very good lox platters. The menu is too big, and there's a lot of misses, but you can get breakfast 24/7.

Detroit and Michigan traditions?

Sorry Michiganders...but I believe the Maurice Salad, even though it was SOLD in Detroit was invented in my hometown of Pittsburgh.

Chunky Soup used to make a great one...but now they only make New England. I live in Connecticut, but can't stand that version.
