Local Produce on Monday near Norfolk?
The only place that I can think of Bennet's Creek in Suffolk, unfortunately. Sorry I'm not too much help. I'm finding the same problem for the restaurant. If you find somewhere please pass it along I would love to use it.
Chicken Wings in VA Beach area
My girlfriend and I always stop by Big Sam's after a day at the beach. They have "tiki time", their version of happy hour, every day from 4-6 I think. Clams, oysters and shrimp @ 10 cents each and hot wings for 25 cents. Decent drink selection, they actually serve in plastic cups, roll of paper towles on the tables, etc. They are at Rudee Inlet next to the parasailing dock. They have a very awkward parking area but the food and drinks make up for it. By the way it is kinda like a dive bar so go as you are.
Where can I fid the best and largest live blue crabs in Tidewater...??
Freemason Abbey in Downtown, I do a few side gigs as a personal chef when the time allows but the time doesn't allow a whole lot right now. If you get a chance come by the restaurant, I would enjoy picking your brain about the food scene in Chicago.

Ronnie, I do think the best place you're gonna find is George's Seafood, that place on Chesapeake Blvd and 26th St. in Norfolk. I really connot think of any other place that would have them unless you want to drive to pungo for something out of the back of a truck. George's Seafood does service a lot of the area restaurants with fresh fish and crabs, they have grown a lot since you were last here.
Happy Hunting,

Va Beach/Norfolk -- Thanksgiving Day Dinner Restaurant Options
If you try the Lynnhaven Fish House call ahead... due to our recent noreaster some of the Lynnhaven Fish House may not be open. Also some of the areas independant restaurants will probably be closed, but the restaurants that are in hotels, ie Catch 31, Mahi Mahs in VB or Shulas in downtown norfolk will be open. The best bet is to call ahead regardless. I have also heard that Steinhilber's in VB is very nice.
Suggestions near Hampton Roads, VA?
The only place I can think of that you could carbo load at the Beach is Mannino's italian bistro on Princess Anne Road. http://www.manninositalianbistro.com/ordereze/Directions.aspx
There really isn't a call for carbo loading at the beach, too many health freaks during the summer have affected the restaurants mentality down here. The link is for directions to help. Good luck and let me know how it is, I haven't been there yet but I have a few friends that have gone there and loved it.
Calling All Hampton Roads Chowhounds!
I don't know either, I was going to use my gps to get there, but check them out at steiny's.com for more info. They have their full menu online also. I do know that they have been there forever, I just don't know where in Virginia Beach it is. They just won the Virginian-Pilots best fried shrimp award in last sunday's news paper and I've heard that their twice baked potato is really good. They don't do anything fancy just good food presented nicely. Good luck and let me know if you go.
Calling All Hampton Roads Chowhounds!
Just heard from a friend of a friend that Bobby Huber is the exec chef at Steinhilber's, sorry if I butchered the name. For those of you who were looking for him to resurface. I haven't heard if he plans on doing anything to the menu though. When I get a chance I'm going to have to go down there and give it a try.
Calling All Hampton Roads Chowhounds!
The freemason lobster deal is only good on Wednesday, otherwise its $24.. definately worth the wait for a wednesday. Coming from the Long Island lobster is not worth $20 or more to me.
NORFOLK VA Great takeout/delivery/epicurean lunch
As a native NYer, I agree it is near impossible to find a good deli here in Hampton Roads, and let's not even mention bagels. Although, whenever the local food awards come out the 21st Street deli on 21st St. in Norfolk usually wins. They are in a strip mall between Llewellen and Omohundro across from the construction area. I haven't been in a while but I remeber it was good, but not the same as NY delis. If that doesn't work then the La Bella on 22nd St. across from the Market does some really good Italian sandwiches, fresh bread, cheeses, and meats stuff like that. Good luck and happy holidays.
Differences in oaks
I just came back from a wine festival in Va and I now have this nagging question that no one from the wine festival could answer...What is the differences between oaks. For example what makes french oak different than american or "fill-in-the-name-of your-state-here" oak? Is the diffenece that huge or is it subtle things? What are the differences in flavor and texture? Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can educate some of the wait staff at the restaurant that I work at, they have the same nagging question now.
Hampton Roads Casual Seafood
It's north of the intersection of Lafayette and Chesapeake Blvds. on the west/left side of Chesapeake Blvd. I agree they always have great deals and very fresh fish. Good luck.
Best Wine Deals in Hampton Roads?
Total Wine is going to have more of a selection but the prices between them and Harris Teeter are about the same. Your best bet is to go to Costco or Sam's Club for on the cheap. The selection is lacking but the value is there, lots of Magnums. There is also a place in Chesapeake that "makes" wine, you have the option of varietals and they bottle it for you...you could even make your own labels to celebrate your wedding. I don't know their costs or their quality but it's another idea. Happy hunting.
Best breakfast in Norfolk Hampton Roads
Favorite breakfast in hampton roads is a toss up for between Charlie's on Granby St. in Ghent or Donut Dinette on Colley Ave. Both are really good and both have hash and SOS, although I haven't tried it anywhere, too scary!! But everything else at both places is very excellent. Check out this thread for more info... http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/483120
Hampton Roads sushi quest
My fav for sushi is Kotobuki on 21st St. in Norfolk. Small place but good food. Very fresh ingredients and good service too. If you're driving to it be careful, you might drive right by it, again very small. No rolls for me though, if they're included in a sampler or part of the dish I ordered then fine. Happy hunting.
Where to get a good Thanksgiving Turkey in Virginia Beach/Norfolk
I will agree with you on Central Meats, but also try Southern Packing Meat Co in Hickory- extreme south chesapeake, near NC. They have about the same set up and out there, there are plenty of farms for them to go to. Their # 757-421-2131, they have plenty of coices too (free range, fresh, even antibiotic free i think). This far in advance I'm sure they can come up with something that suits butget and specs for you. Good luck.
Egg Cream on Long Island
My mother is from the bygone era of soda shoppes and counters in the pharmacies and has been fiending for a decent egg cream. I have moved out of state years ago and I used to be able to make one at the Baskin Robbins I worked at by MacArthur Airport but they have gone down hill since I moved away. Can anyone help my poor mother with her search, I have a feeling she will drive distances if its worth it.
Favorite VA vineyards and weekend getaways
My girlfriend and I just got back from visiting her sisters' wedding in Annapolis and stopped by some vinyards on the northern neck. Unfortunately, the Chesapeake area in south hampton roads is bone dry of vinyards but the northern neck wine trail is quite nice. Six rather small vinyards but decent stuff non-the-less. For more info check out northernneckwinetrail.com, they even have a B&B section on their website. We didn't stop long enough to stay anywhere or eat anywhere but most wineries have cheese and craker trays available. Our favs were Ingleside and Oak Crest.
Norfolk, Va Restaurant Week
Ok 7 cities with yet another restaurant week behind us, what were your hits and misses or places that you will want to go to next January? For me, I only got to go out once, to Byrd and Baldwin. Food was top notch, GF ordered the filet and I had the tuna and both were perfect. Unfortunately, I had yet another bad time there. I have been there three times and everytime my first choice of wine was out of stock, this time my second choice wasn't available either. The service in the bar area was slow, they even sat us behind one of those really nice 100 year pillars so our server could barely see us. To top it all off the ice cream on my dessert had been freezer burnt, with those really nice big chunks of ice in it. I know we speak very highly of them but I have convinced myself not to go back there again (three strikes and they're out). I think that I should have stuck to one of my usual haunts of Bobbywood or 219. But what say you seven cities how did it go for the rest of you?
Williamsburg - Norfolk Vacation
One personal opinion, Todd Jurich's is a little over-rated but the food quality is top notch. I will also agree with your restaurants to avoid but San Antonio Sam's is a good spot to grab a beer and people watch, every second and last Friday of the month is Rocky Horror Picture Show night at the movie theatre next door, really good fun there. I have had some really bad experiences lately with the winehouse and really not that kid friendly. Cora's is closed and is now a Peruvian Steakhouse, Imperio Inca I believe. Hope this helps and have a safe trip.
Chesapeake, VA--nice restaurant to take elderly lady
For a woman with traditional tastes the Courthouse Cafe would be a good idea for the two of you to try. But I will also recommend the Founder's Inn.
Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake?
Hampton Roads, Va...where should we eat next has been a very popular thread in this area. Good luck with the job hunt.
Portsmouth, VA
The thread, Hampton Roads...where do we eat next is very popular. If you are looking for places, Stove is good, Comfort also is tasty but the food scene in portsmouth is thin, try downtown Norfolk or ghent.
New Thai in Norfolk
Don't think that it actually is. I think the Imperial Inca rest is in the space that everyont thought that said pho place was going to be.
Hampton Roads, VA: Where should we eat next?
Thanks to this thread, I have given my girlfriend a reason to eat locally in Newport News. We went to Thaijindesu last night and the best Thai food that either of us have had in years!! I had the Thaijin delight with pork and she had one of the duck dishes that I would butcher if I had to say or type. But we want to go to some other places like 99 Main and Create, what are some of the faves and must haves there? I am still trying to get her to move down here to the southside but good food is a nice little perk to the drive to see her. Thanks for the help.
Breakfasts and brunches in Hampton Roads
The food hasn't changed at all, its the same greasy spoon it always has been. In a good way that is. I have recently been to the 219 and their brunch was very good, I had a Kentucky hot brown that was awesome and I hear that omar's has a good brunch as well.
Brunch In Norfolk, Va
I was blessed with a sunday off again, this time it was to go to my friends wedding, but anyway...I went to 219 for brunch and had a really nice time. Our server was new and couldn't help with the menu or drinks but who needs it. A bloody mary is a bloody mary but their's had a lot of horseradish which I really liked and the food was really good. My date ordered way to much, Summer's Slam, tons of food and I got the Hot Brown. The hot brown had a cheddar sauce on it which was a nice touch and the applewood bacon was a fun slice of heaven on the plate. For those of you who can get a chance to go please do.
Vegan Catering in southeast Virginia?
Depending on the size of the party Gourmet Gang might be able to help you. Some others that I can think of depend on what you are looking for (i.e.: sit down vs. buffet style and the amount of creativity.) If you are looking for a catering hall gourmet gang is probably your best bet, but if you are willing to do a rest. try the boot or bardo. That's the best I can do other than to offer my services. Hope this helps and good luck.
Hampton Roads, VA: Where should we eat next?
I just recieved an invitation from a friend of mine to his wedding with the reception at the boot. Has anyone been there recently, I know there have been some not good reviews here but I have never been. Have they worked on anything, anything to stay away from, anything that is a must order? All this would be very helpful, if I should eat before the reception or not. Worse comes to worse there is a Wendy"s nearby!
Imperio Inca in Norfolk's (Va.) Ghent
Thanks for the update...I have been meaning to go there for dinner. What are the prices like, meaning do you feel cheated or slighted by portion size for the price? Any decent wines or drinks that they do very well?
