Agave Nectar Desserts
Yes, I have. I'm hoping for a non-veggie spot that everyone else in my party (non-veggies) can enjoy. I'm not going to use the occasion to try to convert, as great as I know Angelica Kitchen is. Thanks, though.
Agave Nectar Desserts
Anyone know of any spots—besides Babycakes NYC and Pure Food & Wine—that offer desserts made with agave nectar instead of sugar? I'm hoping for something a little higher end, and more mainstream than the usual vegan places.
Best coffee in New York City?
I second 9th Street Espresso--both locations (9th St and Chelsea market)
Also Abraco on 7th Street.
Dining w/ Views of the Waterfalls
I'm questing for the best outdoor dining spot that offers a view of the current Waterfalls installation (http://www.nycwaterfalls.org/). Doesn't really matter where as there are four waterfalls total. And to clarify, I'm interested in sitting down for a meal—not grabbing a sandwich and heading over to the Brooklyn Promenade to take the sights in from there.
ISO Subterranean Drinking and Dining Spots
These are all great spots, and I already have them on my radar—thanks so much. But anything newer?
ISO Subterranean Drinking and Dining Spots
Full disclosure: This is for an article I'm researching...not an assignment, but something I'm writing on spec.
I'm looking for underground (as in below street level) bars and restaurants in the Manhattan area. The newer the better—preferably locations opened in the last few months or so, or perhaps even soon-to-open spots. Vibe doesn't really matter so much as the theme of being under the earth.
ISO: A Cup of GOOD Cheap Joe
I just heard that 9th Street Espresso has a $1 cup of French press...THAT's what I'm talking about!
ISO: A Cup of GOOD Cheap Joe
With a Starbucks on every other corner, I realize I'm looking for a fast-fading, wondrous thing here...a cup of GOOD coffee on the cheap. I'm not talking about the 75-cent cup of swill you can get at any deli or stree-cart. I want quality, aroma, taste--and preferably no more than $1.25.

Wheat-Free Desserts in EV/LES area
My neighbor used to be a huge fan of the LES bakery "Happy, Happy, Happy" on Allen street, which closed about a year ago. His birthday's tomorrow--any alternate recomendations for wheat-free treats in the east village/lower east side area? We already tried some stuff from Babycakes. He is NOT a fan.
S'mac....are there still long lines and has it improved at all?
S'Mac's not worth the hype. It's a gimmicky mac 'n' cheese spot that should have far more hits than misses, considering that's all they serve and the different types. Go somewhere else where mac 'n' cheese isn't the only thing on the menu-- ironically, many places that have mac 'n' cheese on their menus as a side dish only actually turn some of the city's best.
Best Chinese Delivery in Union Square/East Village area?
Friendhouse would be my pick.
Good tea and/or coffee shops by NYU area
There's also Think Cafe/Think Coffee on Mercer right there on Mercer (between West 3rd and West 4th Streets).
MARDI GRAS!!! where to celebrate?
ACME this year, for sure. I had so much fun last year--and I don't remember it costing me a ton of money either. Lots of drink and appetizer specials, and I think there was a raffle to raise money for Katrina victims. They're doing the same this year.
website for menus?
menupages.com is the best. There's also the NY Magazine website: http://nymag.com/restaurants/
Gluten-Free in NYC
Risotteria is a big gluten-free place in the village--obviously most dishes are made with rice, but they also have amazing gluten free breadsticks. It's pretty popular, regardless of your diet preferences/restrictions.
kid-friendly downtown restaurants
There's s'mac (12th street between 1st and 2nd), for a variety of macaroni and cheese dishes. I'd also recommend some place with a lot of space like ACME, which also serves kid-friendly food like mac'n'cheese, mashed potatoes, burgers, etc., along with your typical cajun and southern comfort food classics. They have great drinks too, if you've had a long day with the kids and need one...
Brunch in the East Village
If you like southern/cajun food, ACME does a pretty good brunch--well-sized portions, not expensive, good space and very kid friendly too.
Vegetarian Gluten-Free Restaurant Rec in East Village?
Risotteria IS great, but again, wrong side of town. My top choices are: Counter (quite inventive), Angelica Kitchen (classic, healthful, reliable), and Lan Cafe (very good, super cheap).
Asian Noodles....Where?
Momofuku. Hit it last--anything afterwards will be a disappointment.
Mac and Cheese
Try ACME. Even though it's listed on the menu as a side dish, the portion is enormous. Nothing fancy--it's the mac 'n' cheese from your childhood (or mine at least). And so good.
Superbowl Party Somewhere Downtown
Definitely try ACME on Great Jones Street. They're having half-off of appetizers all night, and a raffle and beer specials ($3, I think). Plus, it's a restaurant-slash-bar, so you can probably grab a table and have a full meal--if you like southern comfort/cajun food. I got dragged out to watch the Superbowl there last year, and I remember how it actually made the whole experience quite tolerable for me. Very friendly people--you don't need to be a sports fanatic to go.
Mekong - Soho
I loved the Mekong on Prince and was sad to see it go--food and decor were both fantastic in my opinion. I'm going to go check this new one out.
best buffalo wings
I had pretty good Buffalo wings at ACME last week, which surprised me given it was a southern comfort/cajun place (you can choose Buffalo or BBQ). I know for Superbowl they're having a promotion on all take-out orders: free order of wings for every $50 spent. If you eat there, all appetizers are half-off (including wings).
Superbowl Party
I was at ACME (southern/cajun) down on Great Jones St last week. I saw something advertising a free order of chicken wings for ever $50 spent on all take-out orders. Their portions are huge to begin with, so they might be worth a try if you want a big spread of food for the night.
Great Jones Cafe is repulsive
Me too--the folks at ACME are much nicer too. At Great Jones, it's southern comfort cooking with a side of attitude, but at ACME they really go out of their way to make sure you're enjoying everything. Fantastic mashed potatoes and po'boys to boot.
Best pizza in Manhattan? Totonno's?
I second Arturo's. Great pizza, good location, and it's certainly been there long enough to have its own bit of historic "weight."
warm, cosy place below 14th street
I'd suggest 9th Street Market (between First and Second Avenues). Small spot, great southern-themed dishes made with really good fresh ingredients, and they have a fireplace. You might need to make reservations, depending on the night.
Acme does a mean mashed potato
Since it will probably be a while before I get down south, I decided to satiate my craving for Cajun/southern food at Acme on Great Jones Street--my first time there in years. Hands down, best mashed potatoes! Nothing fancy, no unnecessary flavors...just spuds, with some bits of skin in the mix (and a couple pats of butter, I'm sure) and a really delicious gravy.
The staff is really friendly--I think next time I'll go ahead and ask a waiter what the recipe is.
