Is Gemelli's in San Diego still open?

Walked by a coupe of days ago and it's posted for a new liquor license - new name, new owner.

New, unique in San Diego

Finally made it over there a few days ago - good recc! We did one flank steak salad - great beats and radishes and the lettuces are perfect - and one Cobb. The way their line is set up is not optimal - we might have ordered differently if we had been able to see the wonderful grilled veggies and the rest of the makeup station *before* we ordered, instead of between the order station and the cash register. Their house-made peach cobbler was to die for, too. You can really taste the difference in the ingredients these folks are using:farm fresh and just wonderful.

Your favorite food spots in San Diego?

Oh, and I'd also second the Cafe Chloe and Better Half suggestions, and add Cowboy Star (near Cafe Chloe) and Basic Urban Kitchen (for great pizza).

Your favorite food spots in San Diego?

If you really don't want to make i Trulli too crowded, and want to enjoy the same level of food without driving so far, Buon Appetito in Little Italy is owned by the same folks and is a lot closer to downtown.

Roseville -- New in SD -- Anyone been?

Oh,my. Been a long stretch of kids, parents and grandkids visiting - finally we have a chance to get back out to restaurants. This looks like it might be first on my list. We did try Tender Greens in the same neighborhood for lunch last week - great for casual lunch. This does look like the old Laurel though. Is George present and accounted for at this location?

There is good Thai food in San Diego

Whoa - this sounds like a great tip - thanks! It's gotta be good for me to drive, but this might do it!

Looking for delicous handmade pasta North County Farmers Market

We had been getting Peggy's at a couple of different markets but just got Delaney's at the Little Italy market a few weeks ago and now pick it up every week. It's great, lots of good varieties including whole wheat. We haven't seen her sauces yet. What kinds does she offer? I've heard good things about your market by the way - lots of folks looking forward to it. Too far away for us to do regularly but we look forward to checking it out.

Del Mar area casual but good?

There are a few farmers markets in that area - I think the best up there is the Del Mar market on Saturday afternoon. Not huge, but lovely offerings. There are markets in Encinitas and Solana Beach on Sunday but they're tiny. The La Jolla market on Sunday morning is more food court than anything IMO.

ooh, and Laurel does a veal tenderloin - they might do a chop if you gave them a day or two heads up.

I thought of Cowboy Star too, and Better Half. Neither list it on the menu, but I'll bet either would do it by request if you gave them some notice.

New Farmer's Market-Little Italy SD

Thanks for the recap, picky. I love the Ferry Farmers' Market myself, and a couple of Seattle markets. I live in Little Italy and I like the way that market is developing. More farmers and real food, less kettle corn and trinkets. Meat, more fish, wine and more cheese, plus more really great food (not gyros - not that there's anything wrong with that) to eat there while we people watch and it could be just about perfect. Yup, room for baby strollers and wheelchairs, and (ducking because I know some folks hate this) I like the dogs being there. It's just all part of a real life scene.

Cafe Du Monde coffee w/chicory in SD

Just saw it at a coffee cart at the Ferry Landing complex on Coronado. They serve it in a cup - not sure if they sell it ground in bags.

Weekend getaway between San Diego and LA - Where?

We love Ramos House in SJC for a day trip - take the Amtrak up for brunch or lunch and stroll around, then hop on the train and come back. I think you could combine the Coaster and MetroLink and do it even cheaper. Of course, we live close to the train station. However you get there though Ramos House is worth the trip.

Ditto the rec of Montage in Laguna. Jimmy Boyce is the Man

Sweet spots in San Diego

Just drove by a spot under construction at University and 5th Ave in Hillcrest - Mille Feuilles, chocolates and pasteries I think the sign says, coming in August. Anyone know anything about it?

New Farmer's Market-Little Italy SD

The Little Italy market is open until 1:30 on Saturdays.

I'm so sad I missed the farmers' market thread from last week - being a market fiend, someone just told me I should check it out, but I was a day late I guess. Is it lost and gone forever? Anyone want to do a reader's digest condensed version, free of whatever sin got it pulled?

Best Frozen Yogurt locations in San Diego / SoCal?

"How many yogurt places does it take to fill a Hillcrest?" Funny!

Here in Little Italy, we have Red Mango, and rumor has it someone else is opening soon.

My take on Cowboy Star

We ate here during Restaurant Week, but ordered mostly form the regular menu - loved it. Very professional service, wonderful sweetbreads, perfectly cooked steak, even though they were very new at that point. We've recommended it a lot and we'll go back. Great interior design, too.

Where is the Amazing Coffee in San Diego/Coronado?

I've always loved Blue Bottle in SF for their coffee, ground and pressed one cup at a time. Are you looking for coffee or espresso/drinks? Odd but true, some terrific coffee places excel at only one or the other - answers might be different if you're looking for coffee vs ristretto.

Pannikin at 6th and G is actually in the area you asked about - downtown - and while it may not be Blue Bottle, it's a much better and more local experience than Starbuck's or Peet's.

Ditto Blue Bridge Coffee Roasters on Coronado - can't remember where they are but I'm sure you can find them on the web. They're family owned and will press a cup of any of their roasts to order.

San Diego Cupcakes

No problem. My husband got a red velvet and a carrot cake cupcake from Parker at the Little Italy market this last Saturday and also picked up a molten lava cake from them that was absolutely deadly (and not in a bad way). ;-)

Cuban sandwiches, baked goods in Ocean Beach

I think the owner posted that the OP was a friend of her husband and she had been testing recipes on him or her. The website - great website - says they're open now, but did it always say that. No phone number on site.

Fish and Farmers in San Diego

Little Italy also has a good size farmers' market on Saturday mornings, but they're brand new and still building their selection of farm stands. They had 40 some booths last week but maybe only 8 farmers and one fish guy, along with flowers and plants, olive oil, salts, pastry etc

I'd second the Catalina Offshore recc and also Barry of Milpas at Vista on Saturday.

San Diego - Need restaurant recommendations

Ooh, I'd like to hear more about the trip to Laja. Reports are amazing but I always wind up back in Rosarito when I head south of the border. ;-)

Great list. Laurel is doing a small plates menu with great prices and live music on Tuesday nights right now.

Oh, and there's always Lucha Libre in Middletown for an experience that you probably won't find in Canada. Reserve the champion's table 24 hours in advance to really feel it.

It actually went up Date Street from below India to all least State yesterday. All the certified farmers were probably in the India to Columbia block though.

Recc a North County SD caterer for relaxed babyshower.

Waters Catering could be right up your alley, and they use a lot of organics and local sources. www.waterscatering.com

Chile Co Catering is big on organics but their menus might be a little too too for you.
