Ranking Portuguese restaurants
Here is my list :
Best : Le grill Barroso on Ontario http://www.legrillbarroso.com/
Worst : Tasquaria on Bélanger (just opened - I bet it closes in less than 1 month)
Montréal classic : Coco Rico (the sauce is made from the pork drippings with lemon, garlic and paprica ... miam !)
Portuguese grill BYOW - Restaurant Tasquaria
Don't waste your money here !
Just went to Tasquaria ... what a scam ! All was wrong, starting with the horrible mildew smell that jumps at you as soon as you open the door to this gloomy place. I should have left right away : from the sidewalk, the 20 - 30 $ table d'hôte seemend a bit steep for the neighborhood - but from the smelly, ugly inside, these prices are criminal ! Anyway, I stayed. What an error ! The caldo verde was a thick muck which had the unmistakable taste of Knorr leek soup mix, the calamari were grey and cold and the chicken was drenched in a cheap commercial Piri Piri paste (and cold as well) ... Ended up at Barosso on Ontario where I orded a great Menu Familial for 22$.
Mexican in Montreal?
There used to be a little place named Mi Burrito Café at 1327, rue Sainte-Catherine East. It used to have the best enchiladas verdes this side of the frontera. Went by last week and found a new name on the door : it is now called Vallarta. Same chef, different menu : it seems they are now going for the "fine cuisine mexicana". Talked to the owner and he convinced me. Have you ever been at Los Danzantes in Coyoacan ? The new menu at Vallarta feels the same ! Cain't wait to try this new version. Let us know if you go !
NY Hound Not Fooling Around
In Quebec City, I highly recommend le Moine Échanson, a little french bistro dedicated to french wine and regionnal cuisine pairing. The summer theme is Mediterranean basin ... muscats, rosés, retsina, xerès, porto, sardines à la plancha, paella, grilled squid, pissaladière...585, rue Saint-Jean, Québec (418) 524-7832.
In Montreal, you have to try M sur Masson, it is just perfect ! 2876, rue Masson coin 5ieme Ave, Montréal. 514.678.2999. Again, a classic French bistro.
Bon appétit !
Brief Review - Eleven Madison Park for RW
Was a bit dissapointed with my EMP lunch experience.
Had the seared tuna on cold asparagus potage : interesting, but nothing to write home about. Then came a horrible chicken rouleau that looked and tasted as if it had been boilled. The chocolate torte was good and so was the passion fruit sorbet.
Thank god for the beautiful setting and the excellent service !
Montrealer's first time in NYC
Thank you all for your suggestions !
I finally was able to get tables at Anthos and Maze for their NYC food week menus and will definitly try to go to Degustation, WD50, Babbo and Montparnasse.
All my meals are booked - merci beaucoup !
Montrealer's first time in NYC
Bonjour !
I will be exploring NYC restaurants during Food Week from July 21 to 24 th. Have already read all posts on the subject and wasn't able to get a table anywere.
Will be staying at The Pod Hotel on 51st Street : Le Bateau Ivre and Montparnasse are any good ?
Searching for unique, different cuisine to inspire me. Anything out of the beaten track, no glitz or fancy decor to suggest ?
Next time you come to Montreal, I'll give you my little secrets in exchange !
Merci !
