Martha's Profile
Best "bland" dishes in DC and MD suburbs
I've had to deal with this issue, and was successful at Central. My husband took me there in March for my birthday, and I didn't have any problems. I've also had success with quiche and cheese souffles, but I don't have any resto recs for those dishes. Sorry, and good luck. I know what a bother this can be.
Horrible excuse for a cupcake
For all of you who have had disappointing cupcake experiences, you may want to read the tasting series that ran in the Washington Post. If memory serves me right, Couture cupcakes didn't do well. Here's the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/cityguide/features/2008/cupcake-wars/chart.html
Best Cupcakes DC/NoVa
I recently bought a birthday cake at Heidelberg Bakery and was very disappointed. Their cupcakes didn't do well in the Washington Post's recent tasting of area cupcakes.
Good, Professional Coffee/Beer/Wine Bar type places in Tyson's area?
The Ritz has a lovely lounge, but if it's afternoon call ahead first. They do tea then, and it may be booked. I've noticed it's popular with businesswomen. The area by the bar is clubby, but can be filled with cigar smokers.
Three Fun Family Dinners in DC
If you go to the zoo, you're a short cab trip to 2Amy's, which my kids love. It's in neighborhood, out of the tourist area. Or if you want Middle Eastern food, there's Lebanese Taverna right across the street from the Woodley Park metro stop. That's the metro stop you'd take to the zoo. My kids enjoy the pizza from the mezze menu.
Coming for a conference and need recs
I went to Acadiana with a large group and thought they handled it well. We all liked the food and had a good time.
Three Fun Family Dinners in DC
My children are very close in age to yours and my recommendations for Georgetown would be Pizzeria Paradiso or Clydes. I would not recommend Paolo's. For dessert, a real treat would be a visit to Kafe Leopold.
Looking Ahead to Valentine's Day 2009
I agree with FoiGras, especially since 2/14/09 is a Saturday.
Sushi Virgin to Hold Nose and Try!
Even though California roll is popular, I agree with you Caroline. I'm not a big fan, especially if it has "crab" in it. Sometimes training wheels slow down your progress and just aren't as good as the real thing. BTW, you are a clear writer.
Food for the train - Union Station
Oh, I agree NYC pretzels and the ones I get home in Pittsburgh blow away Annie's,
Need great food in DC, with an infant
As I have found, you can't predict what might disturb a young child, so why add that element if you don't need it. As Dennis aptly noted, you can have a good dining experience through timing, a full tummy, and clean diaper.
Greek in DC
I think they closed quite awhile ago. Too bad, I loved their baba ganoush with pomegranates.
Need great food in DC, with an infant
As a mother of two, I'd be hesitant to take a three month old to a place decorated to the hilt for Halloween.
French Nougat
A few tears ago, the Trader Joe's in Reston sold French nougat at Christmas time. Unfortunately, they haven't sold it since. Does anyone know if the other Trader Joe's sell it. Or do you know of a place in the DC area (preferably NOVA) that sells French nougat?
Thanks
Giving Zaytinya Another Try
I recommend the rabbit if you don't have a problem with that.
DC-Style Pizza?
Is the Pi in Adams Morgan "related" to the Pi in Virginia Beach? I liked their pizza when we were down there.
Foodie Gifts From Washington
Thank you for explaining my response. I love the Cadbury bars from the UK and Ireland. You can sometimes get the Irish-made ones at Irish shops. Yum!
family-friendly restaurant in Herndon, VA
Euro Bistro on Elden has some vegetarian pizzas and pasta dishes. Herndon also has a lot of Thai restaurants, so you may want to do a Herndon search on the DC board to get recommendations. Are you looking for ethnic or more mainstream food? For mainstream fare, Reston Town Center is nearby and has added some better chain restaurants that may work, such as Il Fornaio -- you'll want reservations for that one because it's popular. If you like Indian, Angeetha on Elden is also good.
Mon Ami Gabi for lunch?
My husband and I had lunch at the Reston location today and really enjoyed it. I had the steak sandwich with frites and he had the chicken and gruyere crepe that came with a frese salad. I really liked the mustard sauce on the sandwich. My husband loved his crepe. We're excited to have a bistroty type of restaurant in Reston. Can't comment on the dining room as we ate outside. We like the urban atmosphere that is shaping up at that end of the Town Center minus the loud Metro buses.
Gtwon area / Bethesda reco for family baptism party
I concur about Filomena not being that great and the decor is just so fussy, especially compared to Divino. You may want to check out 1789. I went to a private party there a few years ago and it was a great setting/good food.
dc / md recommendation request
They may have brought your coffee after dessert because that's the French way. I haven't had coffee when I've been to Central, but the name of the restaurant and chef are French.
Piano Bars?
You may want to check out this web site and then do searches on CH about the various places listed: www.crosstownarts.com/crosstownarts/venues/pianobar/pbar.html
It has a list of piano bars in DC area. Hope this helps.
Who remembers Vesivius Pizza?
Oooh! What a blast from the past. I loved the slices at Vesuvius. For other fans of their yummy, greasy slices, you may want to check out Luciano"s when you're shopping at Tysons Corner Mall. It's located in the corridor outside of Lord & Taylor's upper level. It's the closest I've had to Vesuvius in my end of NOVA.
When you leave DC, what restaurants do you miss?
As for specific restaurants, I really missed the Peking duck and sechuen crispy beef proper at Peking Gourmet Inn. Because I live in Reston, which is not close to Bailey's Cross Roads, I miss those items here.
lunch in leesburg or middleburg
My husband and I have had lunch at the French Hound in Middleburg. Very charming setting and good food. Their web site is www.thefrenchhound.com
When you leave DC, what restaurants do you miss?
When we lived out of the DC area for two years, I missed hard shell crabs the most, followed by crab cakes. Not food, but I also missed the cherry blossoms.
Best Brunch in Dupont Circle?
I read in today's Post Food Section that Tom Sietsema will be reviewing Darlington's in this Sunday's Magazine.
