Restaurants near Douglas Theater in Culver City
Giovanni's Italian is around the corner in a strip mall, casual, but it is pretty good food and they let you bring your own wine. www.giovannistrattoria.com
Native Foods (vegan that doesn't taste like vegan), is a bit more of a walk and more casual, no table service, but good food.
Mezza - Chow Alert for Excellent Lebanese Cuisine in the Southern Hemisphere of the Westside
I was not impressed with the cauliflower/eggplant dish either. I went to Mezza just for that dish based on the raves it received on this board. I thought the eggplant was a little oily and limp and the cauliflower not as crisp as it appeared to be in the pictures somebody posted. We split the combo dish with the filet mignon, chicken, and ground beef kabob. It also came with rice, hummus, and tabouleh sides, all of which I thought were all fresh and light. I didn't notice how salty the meat was while I was eating it, as it was very tasty, but you figure it out about an hour later when you can't drink enough water to quench your thirst. I am not really knocking the food, and I'm sure I'll be back, but I will probably skip the cauliflower dish.
San Marzano Tomatoes - any deals in L.A. area?
I think i's a sort of stamp of approval or authorization certifying the authenticity of the Italian product being sold.

someone posted this link earlier: http://www.santamonica.com/cirqueoffers/
Lots of nearby restaurants are offering discounts on the day you see Cirque by just showing your tickets.
Chestnuts-Westside-in shell-cheap?
They usually don't hit the markets until November. They'll be all over, Ralph's, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Payless Produce on Venice Blvd. and they run about 5.99 a pound, maybe less at the independents.
My husband roasts them every autumn several times a week, once they hit the stores (his favorite snack from childhood in Italy). Don't forget to score the flat side with a knife, make an X, and they'll be much easier to peel. He pops them in the toaster oven for about 45 minutes. The shells dry out so they are easier to break open, but it helps to have to have asbestos hands like him.
Breakfast place between Culver City and Los Feliz
That's a wide area to cover. I only know Culver City end of it:
Metro Cafe on Washington Place
Overland Cafe on Overland (haven't been in YEARS, but a friend recently went and liked it)
Dijonnaise at Helms and Washington Blvd.
John O'Groats on Pico (I recall long lines)
S&W Country Diner on Washington Blvd (again long lines)
Cafe Laurent on Overland (mixed reviews about the service)
Can't vouch for the healthy factor on any of these, but if you choose your menu items carefully, you should be able to find something that fits the bill!
"Little Brazil", Culver City,CA-A gastronomic tour through a yet unnamed Brazilian enclave in LA
Great information. I live in the area and have only tried maybe half of what you mentioned. One of those I tried and liked was Brasa Brasil Grill. Unfortunately it closed as of the end of July. I heard the new place will serve Mexican food.

Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback
FYI-I finally found some myself at Albertson's on Sepulveda/Palms. And, I found Mexican bottled coke at El Camaguey market on Venice/Veteran and Famimi on Overland. Too close for comfort. I sense sugar highs (stupors) in my future!
Blue Cheese Dressing?
I just tried TJ's Organic Creamy Blue Cheese Dressing last week. It is kept in the refrigerated section near the lettuce and veggies. Yummy!
Pacifico's Culver City no more??
Que paso'? Went to check out the M. Chaya today and noticed Pacifico's next door was closed. A couple of posted signs stated that the alcohol license had been suspended and that K.V. Culver LLC is taking over the establishment. Anyone know what's next?? I felt a little sad for Pacifico's even though I'd only eaten there once the whole time it was there and thought it was so so.

Cozy place an Irish Coffee on a cold night?
I haven't been myself in years, and I'm not sure if you had a hotel lobby vibe in mind, but when you mentioned fireplace I immediately thought of Shutters on the Beach Hotel. We used to go there to enjoy coffee and dessert and it was very cozy with fireplaces and comfy sofas and a piano player. Also right across the street is Hotel Casa Del Mar which is good for the same.

Cafe Corsa - Clover #4 in LA!
It's a new independent shop just south of downtown on Figueroa, tucked away in a small center (beautiful old red brick with lots of arches) that's easy to miss on the first pass. Rick, the owner/operator, clearly understands the coffee-making process with all the subtleties involved, from bean selection and roast to brew time. While I was excited to see the Clover there and wondered why he doesn't promote it more, he said it's really all about the coffee (not the machine, I assume) and he hoped his customers would grow in numbers for that alone. Well, I say it couldn't hurt to get the word out about another Clover in town...so Coffee-Loving Chowhounders, go check it out:

Need help finding a "tasting walk"
Second Abbot Kinney in Venice. It does have a nice eclectic mix of dining/tasting choices. Drove through last Friday night to grab a slice from Abbot's Pizza and the street was filled with people, from end to end. Don't forget Hal's Bar and The Other Room. Actually, from Abbot Kinney, you could even walk on up to Main St. in Santa Monica or scoot on over to Santa Monica or Venice Beach walk.

New restaurants in Culver City?
It will be the restaurant space inside HD Buttercup in the Helms Bakery Bldg. I think it has it's own street entrance too next to Jazz Bakery on Helms Ave. Was supposed to open in July but I think it's been pushed back to the fall.
New Mexico Green Chili in LA
Yes that one! It's true! I just stopped by there (the one next to Costco)! They have Bueno Foods frozen Red Chile and frozen Chopped Green Chile. Change of plans for Super Bowl Halftime snacks today!
New Mexico Green Chili in LA
Woohoo! Do you know if they have the frozen red chile too? My mom pays the $50 shipping fee to get her supply and shares some with me. She swears by it (both parents born and raised in NM) and now I'm hooked too. I told her I'd split the fee with her next time. This will be great news if we can get it locally. It's about time!
French 75: Run away! Run away!
I've got to pay more attention to the "date posted"! Thanks for responding anyway! You are right, I tend to focus on % rather than overall pic...what's another 5 bucks when you're dropping $100. I was just curious as to the customer's motivation behind tips. My husband is a former waiter and now small restaurant owner so I've learned to pay attention when someone has left more than 20 or less than 15, but I have found that it is more the mindset/custom of the individual diner (like your husband) and not so much the level of service. And you're right, why take it out on the waiter if they were friendly and attentive. The best way to send a message is to never go back.
French 75: Run away! Run away!
Sorry you had a bad experience. I've never been myself, but I was wondering why you left more than 20% tip (if my calcs are correct) for such a lousy experience? Perhaps my question should have it's own thread, but is it now standard to leave 20% rather than 15% for substandard service? Just curious. Chime in anyone.
