Best Sushi Bar
I also recently tried Doma for mostly nigiri and was pleasantly surprised. I had pretty much given up on affordable, good quality sushi in Philadelphia but this might just fit the bill.
Authentic homestyle Japanese in Philly?
Thanks! This seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. I'm going to try and head out there this weekend!
Authentic homestyle Japanese in Philly?
Having moved here a year ago, I have yet to find a good place for homestyle Japanese food. Does anyone know a good place for this? I like Mormimoto a lot but it's a bit expensive. What I'm really looking for are basics like donburi, Japanese curry, and sukiyaki... Any suggestions appreciated!
Cooking Schools in Chiang Mai?
Hi Dave,
I don't know anything about CMTCS but when I was in Chiang Mai I took a cooking class with Orchid Cooking School. There were 6 of us total, each with our own wok, and a very engaging instructor who also took us through a market beforehand so that we knew which ingredients we would be cooking with and what they looked like. It was probably not the most "authentic" experience, but the nice thing about having some substitutions (like chicken stock instead of Nam Pla) was that it made it easy to translate the recipes when I returned to the US. Our instructor also made mention when non-Thai ingredients were substituted in. Class was complete with a nice recipe book and so so much food that we were all able to take leftovers back! It's been about a year, so I don't remember how much it cost, but it seemed more than reasonable at the time. Hope you find a good class - it was definitely one of the highlights of my trip!

Need recs for sushi dinner in center city Sunday
Wow! I wish I had seen more of these before yesterday! Ended up going to Haru (I think I might have gone anyways because mixed reviews always make me curious!). I have to say that I wasn't impressed with Haru either - it was definitely better than Pod but fell quite short of my expectations - the unagi came to the table cold, the uni had a slight "crust" over the soft interior, and in general I was missing the melt-in-my-mouth feel that goes with really great sushi... Next time I think I'll try Zento or Uzu (Uzu was closed on Sunday unfortunately). Thanks for the suggestions!
Need recs for sushi dinner in center city Sunday
I have a dinner date on Sunday and am looking for a place that serves great sushi and good service. I've done my homework and narrowed the field down by what is open and in the area - the problem with past boards is that everyone has a different idea of what "great" sushi is... so I'm hoping a few criteria will get me steered in the right direction!
I prefer nigiri sushi over maki sushi, loved Morimoto, didn't like Pod, I'm hoping for a cleanly restaurant where you can have a conversation (instead of blaring music), but the atmosphere can be modern or more "traditional". The restaurants I've found so far are: Genji, Fuji Mtn., Shiroi Hana, Raw, Haru, Shinju, and Zento. Thoughts??
Dinner recommends in Atlanta, vegetarian friendly near CDC?
Several of us have a short trip planned to Atlanta for just a day and am looking for good dinner recommendations in Atlanta. We're staying near the CDC, so that would be ideal, but I'm open to any suggestions. One person in our small group is vegetarian, so I'm hoping for something vegetarian friendly, although the rest of us eat everything. Our budget is moderate ($10-15 per entree, roughly) and we're really more interested in good food over ambiance or atmosphere. It would be nice to get a variety of suggestions in types of food, since I'm not sure what people like/don't like (Indian, Mexican, American, whatever...). I pulled a couple of ideas from previous posts, but most of them leaned towards Italian (Osteria, Fritti, Ecco). Thanks!
Japanese in Salt Lake City
I add my kudos for both Takashi and Kyoto. Takashi is not great for big groups, though, since the space is open and gets fairly noisy particularly on the weekends. They don't take reservations on the weekends either.
I've also been to Ichiban since the switch over and have been disappointed. It has joined with the Mikado empire known as the "Latitude Group" which is quickly aquiring restaurants to become the next Gastronomy of SLC. A lot of the long-time staff at Ichiban have taken off (or been let go?) and have been replaced by staff that seem to float between the other Latitude restaurants. I think that Ichiban's unique menu has been taken over by many of the Mikado classics, while eliminating a lot of my personal favorites. In essence, still a cool locale but a lot like going to Mikado as far as menu and staff are concerned.
