Saturday walk-in anniversary dinner
We ended up having a wonderful anniversary day! We had drinks and a few small plates at The Bar Room near our hotel, saw a show at City Center and then sped downtown to an amazing meal at Lupa. We sat at the bar and had a great experience. The lamb's ear, peach and herbed ricotta salad was perhaps the best salad I've ever had. The sweet and salty, with a hit of pepper at the finish was amazing, as were the sardines with cracked wheat and a terrific oriccheta pasta with chicken. The finishing touch of sweet and salty biscottii and vin sano made the night. We can't wait to go back again!

Fresh Figs - Who's Got 'Em?
I know they're not local, but Whole Foods (aka Paycheck) in SIlver Spring had them on sale for $2.99. Tons of them - Black Mission, Brown and Calmyra. I bought some and am making them tomorrow. Hope they're good!
Saturday walk-in anniversary dinner
My husband and I have planned a last minute fifth anniversary trip to NY for the night. We don't want our day to be constrained by reservations, but still want a good meal. Not necessarily fancy, but something exciting and a good culinary experience. We like great food in a not too stuffy or pretentious atmosphere. We are happy to sit at the bar at a place we otherwise wouldn't get a reservation at this late date.
We're staying at 53nd and Madison, but are up for traveling (more likely to go downtown than up).

Fish Grill in NE Philly-Simple Turkish BYOB
If you've enjoyed eating in family owned and operated restaurants in Europe, you'll love Fish & Grill Mediteranian. Every member of the staff is a family member or friend, and they welcome their clientele as members of their community. Ask for recommendations, and you'll receive good advice. But everything is fresh and tasty. They specialize in fresh fish, but my lamb chops were excellent. I've eaten there three times and had three wonderful meals. I'm going back. Bring your own wine, and finish with a cup of Turkish coffee and a home made traditional Turkish dessert. The prices are so reasonable. There is no charge for sharing the large portions. Tell them I sent you!
Niagara Falls/Niagara on the Lake
I just came back from a full week in NOTL, and I found that across the board the food was way over priced and not that good. I also spent a week there two years ago. And have gone for many weekends for the past 15 years.
After trying lots of places, we ended up eating many of our meals at the Pie Plate. It is fresh and flavorful. It is simple soup, salad and sandwiches, and they don't serve dinner, but the food is fresh and good. And the pies and pastries are excellent. I would just rather have a healthy and tasty meal, than a not so good expensive meal.
That said,
We had a good meal at the Stone Road grille, however, the portions were tiny and it was pricy. But, the staff was wonderful and the service excellent. We did not have a reservation on a Monday at 6 pm, and I had my infant son with me. We promised to be quick, and they squeezed us in. And never once did we feel rushed. This is not a restaurant that I would normally bring a baby to, but they were v ery accommodating and we have a great experience.
The Epicurian was good too.
Be aware that the Angel Inn is under new ownership. The fish in my fish and chips was overly breaded and very greasy. Good, casual place though, especially for a pint before or after a show.
We also had a meal at the Peller Winery. I was very diappointed. I got one of their specialties, a veal loin with veal bacon and corn and peaches. It was flavorless. And expensive.

I am making a dinner tonight that requires fresh figs. I have come to find out that they are not quite in season (I found out by taking trips to buy them Whole Foods in Silver Spring and Balduccis in Bethesda). Despite this information, I have not yet given up hope in finding them. Does anyone know where I could get fresh figs for tonight?

I know you tied up this topic, but I thought it would be good to report that we just had a nice dining experience at Dino with our 5 month old this past Sunday evening. We sat upstairs and there was enough noise that no one noticed any peeps that our son made. Plus, I noticed that they had stacks of highchairs in storage. When we called for a reservation I asked to be seated upstaitrs.

I used to live in the apartment building that Pesto is located in, and really wanted to like it. It was SO convenient. But I went once, and never went back. Best bet is to walk a few blocks up to Cleveland Park for your pick of good places.
Gift basket for new baby
I am looking tohave a gourmet food basket delivered to a friend who just had a baby. They live in Oakland. I would like to try to give them "substantial food" vs. snacks. Perhaps pasta, sauce, olives, salami, nuts, etc...something that they can actually make a meal out of. I have been looking online for gourmet markets, but I am coming up empty handed. Any advice?

Crossfire is perfect for the fast, inexpensive burger. Lots of topping options. And very good fries, especially if you get them with the garlic topping. And they serve beer and wine. However, you will smell like the restaurant for the rest of the day.
Dinner Recs in Silver Spring
Jackie's is very good and a first choice for a chowhound recommendation. I second Mandalay if you are looking for good food, with little ambiance. We eat their ginger salad and sour mustard chicken on a regular basis. Cubano's for a bit more atmosphere and tasty cuban food. I have had mixed experiences with Ceviche, but I would recommend giving it a try.
Best sushi with a little bit of scene?
I would agree with recommending Oya. We recently had a foodie friend in from out of town and his new girlfriend is on a raw food diet. We went to Oya thinking we would all be satisfied, and we were. I was not expecting much more than a scene, but the sushi was quite good, as were many of the small plates. And it certainly has much more ambiance than most of the sushi places in DC.
I've never actually eaten the sushi at Saki Club, but it is attractive.
Where do I find a cup of Illy or Lavazza Coffee in DC
Last night I went to Coppi's on U Street and they serve Illy. It's not too far from Logan Circle or Dupont.
