Houston! Show a So california Chowhound (in town for 3 days this weekend ) some love.

I have been reading your boards so I don't overdo the redundancy , but I still need some up to date info: I will be staying in the northwest area near Willowbrook but I am mobile and like any good chowhound ready to drive if need be,for some good grub. Saturday night is the big family night Dinner. I was originally thinking Steakhouse, We have Flemings out here and that seems to be the level of some of the steakhouses I have looked up: Pappas, Vic and Anthony's, Perry's Steak house etc. If we do choose the steak route I want to find the one which gives Bang for your buck , don't really want to go the total high end if I can help it . the other option is Hugos Mexican for Saturday night , sounds like a must visit place.. other than that I don't know what kind of time I will have but I would love some Great casual Tex Mex ..........I am Looking at Gatlins, The brisket house or Rudys for BBQ ..., a great place for some pecan Pie. and maybe a rock solid soul food joint and just a plain old fashioned Great Cheeseburger . sheeesh a pretty touristy list I know but the rest we can get out here in LA.

So Cal Chowhound with girls soccer team looking for the good stuff in Murfreesboro

We wIll be in Murfreesboro Tn. for a soccer tournament for 4-5 days. Looking for a place that does well with groups and if we can grab some of the local (BBQ) flavor as well so much the better... I also am looking forward to ditching the group for some solo trips . Trying to stay away from chains (Unless they are southern based and REALLY good). I will have a car but our time might be limited.

Also any must not miss (Please steer us clear of the tourist traps) Nashville suggestions would be greatly appreciated since we are flying in and out of there.

Oh and GREAT pizza suggestions are ALWAYS welcome....... lol

Great Eats-San Fernando Valley

Red Zone Lounge / Golden State Pizzeria

I knew this was a set-up, I sensed she was a shill ... but it was pizza, possibly very good pizza, in my neck of the woods! I just couldn’t help myself; I had to try this "great pizza joint."

Well to Carter, Debra and Diana and all my other fellow Valley chowhounds, save your money, do NOT go to this quirky, twilight zone inspired mess of a Russian mafia bar / pizza joint / hookah lounge.

As a chowhound I usually love quirky but this is right up to the edge of scary, although I was eyeballing some sort interesting looking, Russian potted meat for 7.00....

I won't go into much detail about the pizza itself, but suffice to say.. I think this pizza is vying for that 2nd to last pizza spot right next to lamppost or papa johns. The bread ... I mean crust is almost inedible, far worst than most of the better frozen varieties available. The sauce actually wasn't that bad but then again along the same lines as a good frozen pizza.

All in all it was an adventure that I don't want to repeat for awhile.

Oh there was one bright spot; the special is a "large" pepperoni pizza for only 6 dollars, so while it isn’t quite worth that much, 6 bux isn’t that bad to take one for the team.

Jersey-style Italian Hero (AKA Sub)

Matt and Tony's isnt bad but if you want to upgrade, just a 5 minute drive away is one of the SFV 's best hole-in-the-wall delights, Italia Bakery & Deli on San fernando Mission and Balboa. The bread is made fresh, you won't regret it.The best subs in the valley !!

Any good Chinese restaurants in SF. Valley?

Mandarin Deli is good for the Beef noodle soup, scallion pancakes and potstickers as WHills said, but there really isnt ANYTHING else in the SFV , I can make my usual trek to Mei Long Village in the SGV in about 20 mins from Mission Hills. it is worth the drive trust me.

My new favorite pizza--Redballs Rock & Roll

Red Balls has some pretty good pizza I have been there 3-4 times and I recently slid them into my top ten favorites....the crumbled sausage is tasty but I do prefer the big juicy fennel flavored sausage at other pizza joints. The sauce is the weak link in the chain for me kinda bland ....can't touch Vito's, But the Crust is really nice and they use good quality cheese. Easily one of the best in the Valley

Bahn Mi newbie

I love it because it was a new culinary experience to me awhile back too and it still brings a different approach to a sandwich that a subway/quiznos can't match. Don't do Lee's

I am not sure but I think the SFV area might be the closest to you, try Sherman way and Reseda , (2 blocks west on Sherman Way) Sandwich Express, I like the grilled pork and the meatball as well as the cold cut.
Really good stuff especially for the valley.

Fredo's Phillys - and Bar-B-Que!

yup that was me... I know many chowhounders go there so I thought I would leave my mark.... I gotta say if I lived nearby, going 2 or 3 times in a row would be the standard for me.

A humble primer on Mei Long Village

No I havent tried it yet... any rec's ? .....I recall people saying it was similar to MLV. I think I might be able to make my car take a right turn instead of a left turn... it won't be easy but I'm up for the challenge.

A humble primer on Mei Long Village

Spot on for the most part. .. But I have to say MLV IS orgasmic to me; I love all the bold flavors, and as an admitted newbie to Shanghai style cuisine, I am working my way through the Mei Long menu and have yet to have even a slight disappointment. I guess the main thing I want to know is where can I go for better Shanghai cuisine? With or without XLB (errr.... preferably with)

Searching for the Best Xiaolongbao (Soup Dumplings)???

To me Mei Long has the most flavorful dumplings I drive from the valley 2-3 times a month . You have to get the lions head meatballs !!! trust me on this one.. they are balls of savory goodness. Their won ton noodles are also very very good , house pork pump, their spicy beef noodle soup, spare ribs, jade shrimp etc.... I really could go on and on, I love this place I start with 2 orders of XLB everytime I go.
