Hollywood Area food shopping, retail seafood and restaurants

Thanks so much.

Good recs. I actually happened across the H/H wine bar the other day and loved it. It seemed like such an oasis in all the H/H craziness.

Will check out the Thai markets and restaurants in the coming weeks. I'm also intrigued by Vivoli. In LA, being in a strip mall is almost a recommendation.

As for seafood, I guess I'm going to have to travel, unless Silam looks good. I got Trout at Mayfair this weekend, and one of the trout I was given was way over the hill. My own fault for not being more aggressive about seeing everything before I buy, but I'm suspect of a place that would even try to sell a fish that looked like that. The eyes were beyond cloudy, and there was even a small dried hole in one. For that price, forget about it.

Moving to Hollywood Sunday - Where will I shop?

What about retail seafood? I just moved to this area too.

Hollywood Area food shopping, retail seafood and restaurants

I just moved to the Hollywood Highland area, which feels like a dead zone for all things culinary. I'm looking for any recommendations in the area. Specifically, any place to buy decent seafood (thai town area?), meat, restaurants, etc. I know there is Beard Papa, so that is something. But, are there any other hidden gems in this touristy mess?

Best restaurant pastry chef in LA?

I'm looking for the best pastry chef in LA, not including bakeries and cafes. Rather I want a plated dessert pastry chef. I feel sure that there have been other chains on this, but I couldn't find something to fit my needs. Price and location do not matter. I am looking for the best chef and not the best dessert - I've found a couple of best dessert lists. This is a chef who consistently puts out delicious desserts - preferably with a changing rather than fixed menu. Recommendataions I've received so far include Hatfields and Spagos. Surely there are more than this. Help!

Reasonably priced omakase west hollywood or surrounding area

Thanks to everyone who responded. I certainly have a lot of places to try. I ended up going to Hirozen - Gourmet Market (such a strange name), which was amazing. Got a little nervous when we walked up and only the "G" was lit on the sign, but I shouldn't have worried. What it lacked in atmosphere it totally made up in food quality. They have a $48 omakase, but the food was so good we forgot ourselves and kept asking for more. All told it was $170 including two bottles of saki, which while not cheap is not bad eithere considering we ate a LOT of sushi. I think the $48 is for 12 pieces. Really delicious fresh fish.

I also heard good things about Asame omakase, but they are closed on Mondays. Next time.

This was my first omakase experience, so I don't have much point of comparison, but I promise you I'm going to be trying all these places now. If they are anywhere near as good, I'm hooked for life.

Thanks!

Reasonably priced omakase west hollywood or surrounding area

I'm looking for a reasonably priced place to go for Omakase. I live in West Hollywood, but I'm willing to travel a bit, as long as it isn't too far. Anything less than $100 would be great. I'll be going on a Monday. Thanks so much!

Damiono's Mr Pizza on Fairfax does incredible whole wheat pizza and great pizza in general. They also deliver until 3:00a!!! I really can't say enough about this place. Some of the best pizza in terms of price and convenience I've had in LA. They also do a mean cannoli

If you've read Omnivore's Dilemma...

Wow. This post could not be more appropriate for me right now, as I am in the process of finishing Omnivores Dilemma. I wanted to add that I've visited Windrose Farms, and I know that they are very passionate about the way their plants and animals are treated. They are actually the ones who recommended Omnivores Dilemma to me! They have wonderful produce as well and are currently selling heirloom tomato plants. Can't recommend them enough as a source of anything. Here's a link to a good article covering the farms already mentioned:

Where can I buy head-on shrimp?

Thanks for all the suggestions. This is great.

Where can I buy head-on shrimp?

Recently got James Peterson's seafood book, and he frequently refers to a shrimp broth, but you need head-on shrimp to make it. I've checked the LA Farmer Market fish shop and Whole Foods, and neither have it. Live in West Hollywood area, so I'd prefer something in that neighborhood, but I'm willing to travel a little ways to find. Thoughts?
