campfire ideas please -- foil packets

My Boy Scout version was sliced carrots, sliced potatoes, sliced onions (a good serving of each), with a fat hamburger patty on top. The potatoes and carrots on the bottom can burn, but that bottom layer buffers the rest. And the juice from the burger moistens the whole thing. Geez, I want one right now...

Restaurant near Little Italy

Out of town guests are looking for visit to Little Italy. Based on posts, I think I'd do better taking them elsewhere and then stopping by Mulberry Street for cappucino and cannoli. Any suggestions for good eats--at moderate prices--within walking distance of Little Italy? Thanks, hounds!

Detroit recipes needed, please.

I'm from Detroit, and I know city chicken well. I usually associate it with Polish restaurants, though don't know if it's of Polish origin. Speaking of which, however, he might be partial to other Polish treats, such as kielbasa, pierogis, and stuffed cabbage, which are eaten by many Detroiters, Polish and non-Polish alike. Never heard of Travis burgers; will check 'em out. But you gotta give him Vernor's ginger ale to drink. If you don't have it locally, you can find it online--my wife orders it for me as a treat. Saunder's chocolates and hot fudge are other local favorites you can find online.

Depending upon his religion?????

Hell's Kitchen Sunday brunch?

Old college friend in from out of town. We're looking for a nice brunch where we can linger and talk, and, if we can manage, give her a nice New York eating experience. Any ideas? Thanks.

Alma de Cuba

Wandered into Alma de Cuba on Saturday night, and managed to get a table. Were knocked out by the Cuban music--apparently they have live music every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, according to what we were told. Recognized one song from Buena Vista Social Club, and the rest were of that ilk.

But it wasn't just the music--the food was wonderful. I had the roast suckling pig, with mojo, and my wife had the mariscos in a light, flavorful green salsa. We also ordered green plantains, which were delicious and remarkably un-greasy--almost as if they'd been baked.

The atmosphere was nice, noisy but not too noisy, our waiter was very helpful and pleasant. All in all, a great find, we thought.

Pasties in Michigan?

Spending a week in Michigan in July, mostly around Cheboygan. Any suggestions on a good place for pasties?

Bubble tea outside Chinatown? Any updates?

I see various posts talking about St. Alp's on Third and the sad closing of the place on Sixth and 12th, or thereabouts.

Just wondered what anyone's found since those earlier posts. Any new places?

Thanks!

Five Points

Great meal at Five Points this week. Pistachio-crusted soft-shelled crabs. A nice, original take on a classic. Maybe the best I've had. Good service, and the waiter went into the kitchen to answer our question about how the crumbled pistachios stuck so well to the crabs (flour and egg wash--nothing fancy).

Watch out for the espresso ice cream--delicious, but we're pretty sure it was the reason we were both bolt awake at 2 am.

Seventh Ave South restaurants

Last Sunday's NYT list--Central Kitchen, Hurapan Kitchen, Ostia, Pardo's, Tasca. Any thoughts?

Grand Sichuan: Hells Kitchen

Is it the same outfit as the Grand Sichuan at 9th ave. and, I think, 24th? Better-than-average neighborhood Chinese--I wouldn't travel across town for it, but I might drop down from Hell's Kitchen.

Similar to August?

We've been to August and love it. Looking for something else, similar price range, and similarly fresh, good food. Suggestions in lower Manhattan?

Dinner with music?

Any ideas for a nice dinner with a pianist or pianist and bassist, playing jazz or standards or show tunes? I know about the jazz clubs; I'm looking for a good restaurant with nice music to accompany good food.

Thanks all.

Late dinner near Ferry terminal?

In from out of town, and our conference event ends at Ferry Terminal at 9 tonight. Where can we go for a good dinner nearby? Tnx.

Pearl Oyster Bar -- Review

I find service middling at both, but have usually felt awfully cramped at Pearl's, more so than Mary's--which is saying something.

Paczki? OK, I confess I had to look up the spelling

Thanks all! I'll try your suggestions.

Lunch near Columbia?

I know Ollie's...any other suggestions? I'll be up there around lunch time today.
Tnx.

Mary's Fish Camp

I think it's outstanding. What beats it?

What's your go-to spice?

Pretty lame, I know, but ground hot red pepper, and tabasco...I know I sound like some poor Emeril imitator, but a little heat improves almost anything.

Paczki? OK, I confess I had to look up the spelling

Where can we get paczkis in NYC? Lenten treat for Polish-Americans, and a big thing in Detroit, where I grew up.

Tnx.

Ideas for pomegranate seeds?

We use them in salads with smoked trout. But what do we do with the leftovers? Ideas?
Thanks.

Best Soppresatta

Faicco's (sp?) on Bleeker Street has very good sweet and hot sopressata; I recommend it

Hole in the wall Mexican?

In town for three days on business. Where is your favorite little Mexican dive that's great for tacos, huevos rancheros, anything? Thanks.

Groundhog day dinner

Figure we should make goundhog day dinner at home tonight, especially since he didn't see his shadow and spring is on the way. Any menu suggestions?

Tnx.

Buy Indian spices, Chelsea, Village?

Agreed re: Kalustyan's--outstanding selection of Indian foods, and nice little hideaway counter eatery on second floor. I was looking for something closer when I need to run out for something I need; but I doubt anything could beat Kalustyan's. Tnx.

Buy Indian spices, Chelsea, Village?

Thanks, all! Great suggestions.

Buy Indian spices, Chelsea, Village?

Does anyone know a place where we can buy whole brown mustard seeds, gharam masala, etc. in Chelsea, Village, or nearby? Thanks.

Vernor's Ginger Ale

VERNOR'S FOUND IN MANHATTAN! This ex-Detroiter stumbled on Vernor's at Kitchen, a good Mexican takeout place at 218 Eighth Ave between 21st and 22nd. Please go and buy enough to encourage them to keep carrying it--but please leave me a couple of cans.
