Best meal I ever ate:
Breakfast every day in Costa Rica and Thailand: climb a tree outside my thatched-roof hut, crack a coconut with a machete, and hold it above my head, pointing my thumb at my mouth, then hack it open and scrape out the flesh with a spoon. Repeat.
My current drink of choice:
Old Raj gin martini, atomizer of dry vermouth sprayed on top, ice crystals on surface. Or Jean Marc XO, served in a jigger of solid ice
I really wish I could:
When people ask me what superhero ability I'd like to have, I say "Eat anything and not gain weight/have it bad for my health". I'd be EATING MAN!
My "Go-to" dinner party dish:
Pousse-cafes. I float 4-5 liquers/juices on top of each other in tiny champagne flutes. Secret: use a baby food syringe to float the liquors.
My favorite comfort food:
Pho, chili cheese fries, or a very exotic cheese plate.
My top 5 favorite restaurants:
In no order: Urasawa, Golden Deli, taco truck in front of Nishikawa Auto Service in Pasadena (voted best truck in LA Times...and it's within a short walk!), Terried Sake House, Langer's
My most tattered cookbooks:
My mother's exchanged recipes from Cub Scout pot-lucks, printed on faded mimeograph paper. Also, an antique book of elaborate cocktail recipes, written by a snooty English Colonialist plantation owner in the 1920s who collected the recipes as he yachted around the world.
