my initial, ( ...favorable), impression was that this new space allowed for broader "expresssion" ...
vis-a-vis the former eponymous locale.
Minetta Tavern - Photography Now Banned
rights be gone ... a veritable, single-handed, culinary contrapositive … bravo!
Best sushi/sashimi these days
"...and love having a sushi bar to myself too."
and w/ threads like this, go figure.

My understanding is they have 8 chairs w/ two seatings per evening.
Were you early or late?
At his former venue, the bar crowd varied over the evening.
On my visits, businessmen followed by a more casual, younger clientele as the night progressed.
If he has been given free reign, this is indeed good and welcomed news.
Soft shell crab sightings?
As egit mentions below, 7th ave south of 3rd (mid-block) ...
5$/shell and they will do the prep if you wish ... try these "aqua pazza".
Is "Lucky" the only place to get a decent tomato "out of season"?
Soft shell crab sightings?
It was.
There are good prep recs on-line.
Do note, most restaurants go a step further and fully eviscerate beyond the apron.
I favor saute over fry at home ... a light touch works wonders.
Soft shell crab sightings?
Dumont .... over arugula, roasted pineapple, jalapeno, salsa verde

Too kool!
I'm shaving my midriff ...
shopping for that perfect tube-top ...
and dreaming of how Robuchon is going to pair my Zombie.

"I don't remember seeing anything in the menu that would fit either of these descriptions" …

"ex-Masa" ... impressive.
did any offering capture you .... "neba neba" or "tsuru tsuru" - like?
Soft shell crab sightings?
I had them two weeks ago at LittleNeck; served with sauted ramps.
Their well chosen, albeit limited, selection of oysters ( I've never come across Olympias in town ) and featured specials keep drawing me back.

I've noticed this appearing as an element in quite a few cocktail line-up's this past season.
The most interesting coupling w/ a beet infused vodka ( ... squeeze of lemon & ).

Best sushi in Manhattan

name a course ... who brought it on for you?
15 East: A truly impressive all-out meal from start to finish
No buri, mirugai?
Do they ever get tarabagani here this time of year? ... I love kanimiso gunkan off a fresh steamed crab.
How about SB uni ... murasaki ... softball-sized ... served whole?
Sake bars with amazing food/tasting menu
Zenkichi:
The private booths, downstairs, *could* be "a good place for a date".
I've never thought of this place as an izakaya.
Food-wise, their "chef's" menu reaches for comparision to Kyo-ya.
A recently featured course, shirako/shungiku tempura, was outstanding.
Sakagura:
As noted, probably the best selection of sake in nyc.
And, yes, do ask about the evening's "specials".
In spite of this, i would only consider this an izakaya in the most literal terms.
"date"? ... tried robata-ya on e9th? not too far off the l!
Of course, if it's rolls you want, there's Momo in Bushwick.
