Eton Dumplings - New Location

I understand. And they are certainly more expensive than Chinatown. Not to quibble, but for the neighborhood the price ain't half bad. I'm pretty sure Ting Hua up the street is more $$ and if it's a choice between them, I'd choose Eton for sure.

Eton Dumplings - New Location

Just returned from the new Eton near Smith Street and I'm SO excited about the addition to this side of the neighborhood. The dumplings are not frozen--they make them at the other location every six hours and bring them over. I brought them home (pork and beer) and warmed them up in the microwave (something I'm usually loathe to do) and they were totally delicious. Also, the plum sauce they doctor up is very good too. It was a surprise to find that they'd opened a new location over here. I'll definitely back to pick up a quick meal there often.

The Wing Bar on Smith St.

Just noticed that a new place has arrived on Smith St. Has anyone been yet? Looks like it could be tasty

ceviche in Brooklyn

Couldn't agree more about the ceviche at the Red Hook ball fields! It's awesome. And the last cart toward the bqe is definitely the way to go (though frankly I haven't tried any of the others--haven't wanted to). Delicious!

What's really good in Carroll Gardens these days?

Another vote for Bocca Lupa. It's really excellent. The lamb chops in particular are delicious (and a steal too). And it's definitely a very kid-friendly spot. Fantastic cocktails too! I love it every time.

What's left for brunch in Carroll Gardens?

The brunch at Buttermilk Channel is excellent!

Prime Meats?

We just visited Prime Meats tonight for the first time. They are serving a small bar menu--all German inspired. We had a very crisp and fresh red cabbage salad with parsley. Tasty. But the real star for me was the Weiss Wurst-- homemade and very delicate. It came to the table in a pot of water and we were instructed to peel off the casing. I was a little wary of DIY sausage peeling at first, but the effort (which was minimal) definitely paid off. The accompanying mustard was tangy and delicious, and the side pretzel was pure bready and salty goodness. We also had the pork goulash with spaetzle, which was delicious. Great spaetzle. All together, it was a terrific, snacky meal and I'm very excited about the addition to the neighborhood. They say the dining room (next door) will be opening soon and will "expand on" the bar menu. The cocktails at the bar are also great. It was full, but not crazy busy earlier this evening. And the atmosphere is relaxing and nice. Highly recommend a visit!

Red Hook Soccer Fields - Any less crowded?

Occasionally there is another one down there, which I haven't tried but should. the one I love is the small cart furthest down on Bay St.

Dinner in Redhook?

Good Fork is really the best there, and one of my faves in Brooklyn...

Hecho en Dumbo--must make up for lost time

I stumbled upon Hecho en Dumbo this evening and was very impressed. I'm surprised that somehow I've missed hearing anything about it. The cocktails are delicious, but more importantly, the food was first-rate. I'm so excited to have found great Mexican food in neighborhood! My favorite dish by far was a tasty crabmeat appetizer--real crabmeat and avocado topping a delicious corn "pancake." Wow, I could have eaten several orders. Not to say I left hungry. The plates are small, but they are robust and filling and felt like the perfect amount. I will be returning, again and again!

Red Hook Soccer Fields - Any less crowded?

nip329, you are right, but I for one am happy to see the long lines and their success this summer since the process w the city took so long and for awhile it looked like we might lose them for good. My strong advice to those wary of the lines is to go to the ceviche vendor. I really think it's the best thing there this year---fresh, and absolutely delicious. Really some of the tastiest ceviche I've had. And no line, which is a nice bonus. It's a little more expensive than the other choices, but the seafood amount is impressive. You get your money's worth. You can't go wrong with the ceviche!

Degustation?

I am planning a last minute special dinner tonight and have always wanted to try Degustation. Has anyone been recently? Is it worth trying? Thanks for any and all thoughts.

Veritas

I'm planning a celebratory dinner for two this week. We thought Veritas was amazing and definitely one of the best restaurants in the city when Scott Bryan was head chef, but haven't been since he left. Does anyone have an opinion about the quality now? Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks.

Clover Club

We went last night and really enjoyed the atmosphere and the very tasty cocktails. I tried the Clover Club as well and really enjoyed. We are theorizing that it may have egg white, which gives it a slightly creamy top. Honestly, compared to cocktail prices in the city these days I thought the prices were very reasonable. The food bites were nice too. All and all, fun to have a new place to try in the neighborhood. We'll be back.

Lucali's closed for lunch, Grimaldi's line too long, Franny's boring, DiFara mobbed, Tottono's too far...Try Sam's

Honestly, I think Sam's is the most under appreciated pie in the neighborhood. It's really first rate and you can't beat the throwback, one-of-a-kind charm of the place. It's funny I noticed the "special menu" last time we were there and had to laugh. But really, to anyone in Carroll Gardens who hasn't experienced Sam's and it's awesome pizza (all i really get there)--run, don't walk.

Any one check out Eton for dumplings yet?

Tried Eton last night with a few friends and we were in dumpling heaven! It's kind of a brilliant concept--with its unlikely pairing of (short) menu items. There were no noodles and no tofu/lentil dumplings. But most of us ordered the pork/beef dumplings, and we were not disappointed. They were truly made to order--I'm not sure whether that was intentional as we hit during a rush and soon after they ran out of shaved ice. But the brief wait was well worth it--fresh, juicy, tasty goodness. Perfectly browned. We couldn't try the shaved ice because the aforementioned depleted supply, but I wasn't too disappointed. The dumplings are what will keep me coming back, personally, and II will definitely be back, and often.

Thanks for the link. Frustrating that there's no time table. I really hope they aren't stalled through the summer. What a mess.

Red Hook Ball Fields

I was just over there and no sign of them yet. There is a sign that says "red hook food vendors coming soon" but it's almost July! Does anyone know the scoop?

What to order at The Good Fork?

Completely disagree. The Good Fork is one of my favorites in Brooklyn and I've always found it reasonably priced. Try the crabcakes--they are out of this world. The scallops are also first rate if they have them.

Bday dinner--a good place for venison?

Thanks for all of the feedback! I haven't seen Grocery's menu in awhile -- good to know! I think we will probably give Henry's End a go. The Elk sounds too intriguing. It's going to be a tough choice. I've also been wanting to try Dressler though, so that will have to happen soon.

Bday dinner--a good place for venison?

My boyfriend's birthday is this weekend and his one request for a dinner out is that he'd like the restaurant to serve venison. I know that Henry's End has rotating game entrees this season, but we've never been and it seems to get mixed reviews here. Has anyone been lately? My boyfriend is a former chef and so I have to be just a tad careful about where I take him. Is there any other place, either in Brooklyn or Manhattan, that anyone could recommend for venison? Thanks!

Bagels-Where, oh where, can you be(in Brooklyn)?

Windsor Terrace bagels are my absolute favorite. May be slightly less authentic, but boy are they good.

Chance, Carroll Gardens

Maybe I should stick to dim sum next time. We did have a crab pork dumpling appetizer which was pretty tasty. I got their entrees the last few times I went though, and was impressed. This visit was very surprising.

And thanks for the China Hong recommendation, jeffy--I have to admit that after many bad experiences I had pretty much given up on takeout "fast food" Chinese in NY, but it's good to hear that this place is reliable. I'll add it to my list! I love Chinese food but I find there's slim pickings out there, especially in this thai-centered neighborhood. If anyone has other suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Chowhound Post

Chance, Carroll Gardens

I went to Chance last night with my mother last night (visiting--we just wanted a quick, simple meal) and we were very disappointed in our dinner. I haven't been in awhile, but used to enjoy the entrees and dim sum quite a bit. I always felt I could rely on them for a tasty meal. Chinese food in Carroll Gardens is tough, but they were my go-to place. Has anyone had similar experiences? I'm wondering if something has changed there. The restaurant was even more empty than usual.

Fried clams in the city?

Thanks for the suggestions! I haven't been to Ed's Lobster Bar yet. Ditch Plains is another good thought. I like the strips and the bellies!
