Birthday dinner in Oakland County, MI

Thank you all for your responses. So far Rochester Chop House is looking good. And thanks for the tip about the lights. Will definitely check them out.

Please note that I will be with someone who grew up in the area and knows it well so traveling around outside of AH is not an issue.

We are open to pretty much anything except seafood.
As for location, we are staying in Auburn Hills.

Thanks!

Birthday dinner in Oakland County, MI

Hello. Fiance and I will be in the area visiting family for the Christmas holidays. His birthday is on the 27th. Any suggestions for a nice dinner for 3 in the area. As for budget, prefer to keep it under $50 per person. Is that doable for a nice dinner? I live in the NYC area so I am not sure of the prices for dining in the Oakland County area.

TIA!

Looking for Dutch spekkoek for Thanksgiving

Hello! My sister and I will be hosting an international Thanksgiving meal featuring foods from the countries of the guests. Her boyfriend is Dutch and he spoke about a type of Dutch cake called spekkoek (picture attached below). Anyone know of any bakeries in the DC/Norther Virginia/MD area we can find this? My sister and I are both accomplished cooks and bakers so making the cake ourselves isn't an issue but we have so many other things to cook that we prefer to purchase this already made.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Has Tertulia opened yet?

Or does anyone know when it will open?
Also, is it crazy to contemplate a visit early in its existence?

This month's issue of Bon Apetit has an article about this. Made me want to move there.

Best Nyack restaurant for thirty-something's birthday??

I don't know that Velo is "worlds better" in every category, to be honest.
I've never had poor service at HH and I find their ambiance to be quite fun.
I like Velo very much too but I find that Anthony's menu needs to change up a bit more.
Also, I thought HH a better fit for a group. Velo is very tight and very dark. More conducive to a romantic dinner for two than for a birthday celebration.

Bringing your own condiment(s) to a restaurant?

OP, for a split second there I thought you were talking about Spirito's in Elizabeht, NJ. It's an old school, non fancy, red sauce pasta and pizza joint.
They always bring out Italian bread and a shaker full of parmesan cheese....no butter. Ever. Don't ask for it. It's one of those tough love, type places. Consequently, Spirito's regulars who must have butter with their bread have been known to bring their own. It's not frowned upon as it is part of the restaurant's quirkiness. In fact. over the years, people have joked about getting up a little butter stand outside the restaurant :)

Old world Food Market - Nyack - Any Opinions?

Have been there a few times recently and it still a mixed bag. Their cheese department isn't bad. Nothing too crazy or unusual and the people who have helped the last few times have been surprisingly knowledgeable (not like Ideal Cheese or Fairway, but not bad for Rockland).
The baked goods/pastries are also decent, although they lack a good baguette.

Stay away from the deli counter. They have only one or two premium meats/salume and the people are CLUELESS.

The meat counter isn't bad. Have gotten some nice cuts there before.

Pretty good olive bar and I love their tapenade.

Everything else is overpriced.

Best Nyack restaurant for thirty-something's birthday??

A word on Casa del Sol...their food is TERRIBLE and their drinks are watered down.

Best Nyack restaurant for thirty-something's birthday??

I would suggest the Hudson House. I had my birthday party (10 diners) there last year. The owner and pastry chef, Matt Hudson is an amazing host and the bartender, Andrew, mixes up some great drinks.
The atmosphere can't be beat: it's the old courthouse/jail and the walls and ceiling are pressed tin. The wines are housed in the old jail cell. And Matt's own photography and woodcarvings decorate the space.
It isn't cheap, but the food is good as are the desserts.
I happen to be a fan of Velo as well, but if you will be a slightly larger party, then HH might be a better fit.

Oh, almost forgot. I haven't been in ages but some people I know seem to like it: La Fontana. It's Italian food and it's a large space that is very good for groups. Their brunches are beyond forgettable, but I hear their dinner is pretty good.

Bon Appetit & Paltrow

Actually, BA has been on my list for some time now. A few years ago they started to dumb their content down a bit and I wrote to them about that. This issue, they found it necessary to define "mise en place". Not to be a snob, but most BA readers, don't need that to be pointed out to them.
Also, BA has a perfectly nice little column on the last page where they do a Q and A with celebrities and their cooking and eating habits, memorable meals, etc. I found this to be interesting and fun to read even when it profiled people whose work or general celebrity wasn't to my personal liking.
As for Ms. Paltrow specifically, I don't care for her at all. I find her to be smug, disingenuous, and out of touch. I have felt this way about her for some time. But that is just my own opinion and I know that I don't know her personally and all that, but it's just what I think based on her blog, bits of the cookbook I have read, and just general impression.

Bon Appetit & Paltrow

Actually...last month's is quite memorable because it had the most delicious looking plate of spaghetti in red sauce on it! Lol!

But I see your point and I still don't want her or pretty much anyone else on that cover, to be honest.

Before I even saw this thread yesterday, I fired off an email to BA about having Gwyneth on the cover (it was a bit snarky, to be honest) and they actually wrote back!!

Chelsea

You should try Le Maison du Macaron on 23rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. Delicious French macarons and other pastries.
Also on 23rd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues is Doughnut Plant. They are sort of "nestled" outside the Hotel Chelsea. Very tasty doughnuts.

As for street food: the Souvlaki truck is usually on the NW corner of 21st and 6th next to Trader Joe's. Their souvlaki is ok, but I really dig their Greek fries.
There is also a really yummy taco truck parked on 19th close to the corner of 6th Ave called El Carrito Rojo. They have delicious tacos.

Right up the street from them is Boqueria which used to be really good but I haven't been there in a few years so I don't know how they are doing these days.

Also, it's not technically Chelsea...more like Union Square, but the Big Gay Ice-Cream Truck is usually on Broadway and 17th by the NW corner of Union Square Park. He has some really cool flavor combinations.

If you are looking for a cool place to have a drink, Flatiron Lounge is also on 19th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. It's in the middle of the block and from what I recall, doesn't have a ton of attitude.

Have fun!

Vegan/non-dairy black and white cookies?

I want to get some black and white cookies for a party. The hostess is breast-feeding and her son can't consume any dairy. Does anyone know of a bakery in Manhattan that makes them? I already checked the Babycakes website and did not see them listed. They don't have to be fully vegan since my friend does eat eggs. Only the dairy is a problem.
I suppose I could bake them myself, but I am making other things and don't feel like adding to my workload.

Thanks!

what to do with eggplant?

My favorite way of doing does involve a tiny bit of oil: I slice it in not too thick rounds and then dredge it in a bit of flour seasoned with some salt and pepper. Then I saute it in some caola oil until cooked and golden. I then dust some powdered sugar on it. I got the recipe from Epicurious and although it sounds odd, the flavor combination is very delicious.

"Half Birthday" party food ideas

My friends are using their baby boy's half birthday as a good excuse for the first potluck bbq of the season. The theme, in honor of the occasion is half-foods...oysters on the half shell, Arnold Palmers, half rack of ribs...
The only other thing I can think of are black and white cookies.
Do you CH'ers have any fun suggestions?

Note: this a a very food savvy but not snooty crowd. Also, the mother of said child is on a restricted diet of no beef or dairy due to the baby's reflux issues. It isn't required that everything on the menu be beef and or dairy free, but she is a very good friend and it is at her house so I would like to bring at least one item that she can eat.

Thanks!!

Need a recipe for sharp cheddar

Macaroni and cheese? Martha Stewart has a pretty good recipe and it freezes well.
I also tend to make quesdaillas a lot. My toddler loves them for lunch and they are quick to make when you are very hungry.
You can also make Welsh Rarebit...found the recipe here, on CH.
I have a very tasty recipe for some crackers from Epicurious...Poppy Cheddar Moon Crakcers.

Good luck!

I also make a delicious Cheddar, Corn and Potato Chowder that I got from a Whole Foods flyer a few years ago.

Rec for nice dinner with one picky eater

My boss has decided to take my coworker and I out for a really nice dinner as a reward for a huge project we have been working on for several months.
My boss and I are both food people; but the third person has a very limited palate. This person's diet routinely consists of turkey sandwiches, boneless chicken breast, pizza, mac n cheese, chocolate chip cookies, and Diet Coke. She does not eat any meat other than chicken, fish or seafood. She does like vegetables.
Our budget is about $60-$75 person not including wine. We are not HUGE drinkers, but it's been a stressful few months and we all like wine.
I would like to keep it below 23rd Street if possible.

Thanks!

Recipes found in fiction books...have you tried them?

I've always wanted to make the food from Like Water For Chocolate. The only problem is that they don't have the steps explicity written out. The method for each dish unfolds with the story. However, any experienced cook could probably figure it out.

Chicken Under a Brick

Don't know if you are willing to head across the TZ Bridge, but Velo in Nyack does a delicious pollo al mattone as well.

Restaurants in Rockland

I think you are talking about San Juan Cafe, and they are no longer open.

For pub-like food, I recommend The Olde Village Inne.
I totally agree with the Velo recommendation for a splurge. I have also heard wonderful things about Cafe Barcel, but have not been there myself.

Interesting WSJ story about picky eating as a type of disorder

It makes a lot of sense. We have a disorder and usually a corresponding drug for everything these days.
