Plaka the Greek/Mediterranean restaurant in Jackson Heights / East Elmhurst shopping center

It took me longer to try the place than it should have. After giving up on Rosa's next store and their horrible downturn I finally gave Plaka a try and now kicking myself that i waited so long.Ordered spinach pie which was fresh and not microwaved like the other places in Astoria or bayside. Good not bad but the highlight was the Chicken Souvlaki sandwich. Finally a fresh warm, toasty pita bread that didnt taste old or stale. Chicken was excellent. Juicy and tender and the white sauce was homemade and very good. Reminded of the fresh ones you get at the street fairs. For 5.50 its a bargain and puts all those gyro spots in Astoria on standby. Strange location and its a formal restaurant but they do the traditional greek fast food grill thing very good. Might be better than Gyro World and definitely Gyro Corner.

Riverdale Restaurants

I cant believe you guys are complaining when you have the best chinese in the boro in Golden Gate. The ribs are sublime, the shrimp toast melts in your mouth and their lobster specials are outta this world. They just renovated this place to boot and it looks amazing now. Im surprised nobody else appreciated this gem that blows away King Yum and could give Lums of Flushing a run for thier money in its heyday!

Gloria pizza heads that think Amore pizza are the same owners?

I tried La Vera disgusting. If that was Gloria's your sadly mistaken. Amore's is Gloria's. Talk to the old man and his two sons. Even Blue Eyes the pizza guy whos been with family for 25 years worked at Glorias as a kid. The old lady is gone but her pizza lives on thru her family. Maybe Glorias was better cuz of nostalgia or better ingredients at that time in the 70s. Pizza and Chinese food was better in NYC from the 50s-80s. Long live Lum's and Gloria's. Flushing food icons....

Best pizza in queens??

The old man let the place go to sh*t. Real sad cuz they were top notch back in the day. Bar none the best regular in Queens is Amore aka Gloria's. Dont even bother looking elsewhere. I tried and failed. For the best square I would give it to either VIP or Cascarino. If your a fan of the rare Sesame Slice I would give Caruana's a try in Maspeth. For the record Rosa's id overrated and has suffered from over expansion and trying to be everything to everybody. An honorable mention goes to Carlos on Metro for a regular.

Wanted to try Sage in LIC but got turned off, quick. Was I wrong?

Your very wrong and should not judge a book by its cover. That goes for Sage as well as Difara. I guess you havent been to Dom's cuz you would think Sage is luxury compared to his shop. For the record the food and sweets are excellent and they are in the process of moving to their new state of the art flagship location with cental AC. It will be down the block by Court Square with expanded hours and menu. They are even adding brick oven pizza and rotisserie chicken to the lineup. As you can see they have outgrown their current location and were supposed to move last month. It is the best bet in LIC and Queens for that matter. They are so popular that lunchtime draws lines into the street. It would be empty if it was bad. If you want to wait until they move be my guest but your missing out.

Try Corona Queens. All Dominican from 108 to Junction and back. Sure you will find it there along Roosevelt between those intersections.

Gloria's Pizza

This would be Amore's M.O. to a Tee. The old man in Amore and Glorias is one in the same. Can any oldtimer really explain the difference between a slice from Amores and Glorias. They sound exactly alike! Could nostalgia be playing a factor here in Glorias is glorified to Difara proportions.

Fontana Famous Pizza & Gyro (Bayside)

With all due respect if this was 1988 you might have a point. Fontana as well as Romano have been downhill for a long time. Gyro Corner passed them by years ago when they fisrt opened and Gyro World down Northern is miles ahead of them. Trust me Im a gyro fanatic. Even In Astoria its hard to find an authentic gyro spot that's not using Kronos and inferior ingredients. Two other rec's in your area of Bayside are Kati Allo and the new spot on Bell that just opened. If your still using Fontana you need to get with the times.

Chinese American in Chinatown Flushing for sit down or take out?

I believe I have found a winner (s)! Joe's Shanghai Flushing and Tung Yi Fung. The funny thing is that I tried Tung without knowing it. Everything I had which was the Cantonese American standards of fried rice, soup, chicken, rolls... was fantastic. Now I come to find out the place is well know for dim sum and authentic chinese cuisine. Go figure. I got the classics all done like it was 1988. Joes Shanghai another pleasant surpise. I went to try the dumplings as a first timer and noticed the menu had the chinese american classics that I was in search of. Tried them and everything was very good. My plan now is to stick with these two and work my way thru the menu. So far the shrimp lo mein, fried rice, eggplant garlic sauce, general tso were all on the money. Thank you Flushing for not forgetting about us gweillos who crave that classic Chinese food with an American twist!

Di Fara's: How much is the best NY slice of pizza worth?

This is great news! Should have happened along time ago. I told Dom he needed to raise prices just to be fair to himself. He would always complain his expenses were high but he felt bad raising prices. A slice should be 5 bucks at this point. Its simple economics, the demand is greater than the supply therefore prices must be increased. I guarantee that this small price hike will still not stem the overflow of traffic to Dom's. If he really was a greedy man he would go for the gusto and institute high end pricing for his products. He could easily get away with 10 dollars a slice and nobody would care. His clientele is not going to stop patronizing his pizza shop over a couple of dollars. Add to the fact that Dom goes out of his way to source the best ingredients money can buy from Italy, its a no brainer. Dom is a modest man and is probaly embarassed to have the most expensive slice in the city. The prices for pies should go up substantially as well.

What happened to Anna Mia's?

As far as I know from when they first opened the storefront was strictly a a labor of love by Anna Mia's mother. They would only open Saturday for limited hours. She had a regular catering business with commercial accounts that occupied her all week. The Saturday thing was just an idea her mom came up with. If I recall Anna always looked uncomfortable there while her mother was very happy to talk with customers and work the counter. The mother was vey charming and a real people person. I would guess Anna decided to close down the retail side of her business.

I forgot to mention Brazil Coffee House LIC. They have 3 locations with plenty of seating.

Espresso 77 in Jackson Heights

I strongly disagree. I tried this place and was shocked how expensive it was and how bad the espresso is. For Starbucks prices they sure are doing a good job of producing that nasty bitter burnt taste that SBUX is known for. The double shot in everything is a bit over the top and shows how their shots are of poor quality. If they're thrying to imitate Shock in Woodside with the overcaffienated lattes thats fine but this place is far from gourmet espresso. I'd rather pay half the price at a Italian cafe or bakery and get quality Espresso like Illy or Lavaza prepared the traditional way.

Are there any cute non-chain coffee shops in Queens?

La Flor in Woodside. Great patries, cakes, cookies, baked goods. Make all types of hot beverages.Their Mexican hot cocoa is not to be missed. Add sugar if needed cuz its not like that Swiss Miss crap.

Sage American Kitchen LIC. Same setup with less seating but great cupcakes, muffins, scones, cookies. Make great hot drinks to go along with the sweets.

In my humble opinion skip Aubergine in Sunnyside. Very poor coffee drinks and their food and baked goods did not please either. They are overpriced and overrated on here.

NY Hall of Science area. Food?

Since this is my hood let me add some wisdom. Unfortunately your best bet CHPS (Corona Heights Pork Store) is no more! Forget what you've heard this place blew Mama Leos outta the water. Their heroes were second to none. Leo's gets much hype but truth be told I feel they are very overrated. Its decent but nowhere near the hype. CHPS had better bread, fresh mozzarell, and meat. Corona Pizza has been going downhill for a long time now. Dont bother. Empanadas del parque are good and their coffee is excellent. In this area your better off getting some authentic Peruvian or Colombian cusine. There are numerous places to go. Many dominican spots if thats your thing as well.

Chinese American in Chinatown Flushing for sit down or take out?

Went to King Yum last month based on the rec. here and it was dreadful and overpriced! I knew I stayed away from there all these years for a reason. Terrible and forgettable. Next! There is a place on Francis Lewis in Whitestone called Evergreen. Similar to Yum but have no idea on the food as there are not any reviews of the place. Will try that next. Has anybody been? My next choice after that is Keilly's in the College Point shopping center. heard they have good takeout. I still think there is a good Chinese in Flushing for gweillos but its very UTR at this point. This is where being a real chowhound comes into play. I wonder if Jim Leff could solve this mystery. Finding really good Chinese food in Queens the way it was in the 60s and 70s. For the record there are plenty of blacks, latins, indians, whites in Flushing who love chinese food just as much as pizza and burgers. This whole theory that there isnt a market for old school Chinese is pure rubbish. Long live Lums and may he return in all his glory.

Best Sandwiches (Any Type) in Queens

Sage American Kitchen in LIC on Jackson Ave. The most slept on place in Queens without question. Over 20 different sanwiches made fresh daily, entrees, cakes, pies, desserts, espresso, salads, soups.... The only downside to this place is they close at 3 on weekdays. If they were open at night and on weekends I would never eat anywhere else. Manhattan quality over the 59st bridge. The place is a hidden gem.

Di Fara [split from Manhattan board]

Is it possible for Dom to make a square pie with the red sauce from the regular pie instead of the meat sauce he uses. Im not a fan of meat sauces in general and I think his round pie marinara is divine. Imagine that on a sqaure, wow. Please tell me this is possible....

great cakes/pies in the Forest Hills area?

Martha's is truly disgusting. Someone told me the original in Astoria is better. I couldnt even imagine how you go from vile to inedible. They have a good gimmick. Nice sign, clean layout, they lure you in and you get duped

Pio Pio To Go: Awful

First time and was suprised how nice the decor of the takeout place is. The owner must be a millionaire to open a restaraunt on the corner of his block just to handle take out. They screwed up my order but I will be back. The one thing I noticed was that the chicken did not taste as good as the sit down places. Is this possible? Also I noticed many things added to the menu and wondering if theres any worthy contenders to the pollo. The only downside for me with Pio is the lack of sides or appetizers for a nice meal. The chicken and sauce are undeniable but it would be nice if they could get some edible dishes to go along with that. With one great thing they should be another Pollos Allla Brasa. As a restaurant they should offer more and of quality standards.
