Best Jamaican Patties - GTA

Went to Fahmee based on your suggestion. I found it to be too doughy with little filling and very bland. The crust is rock hard. So far, Randy's is my favourite.

best breakfast joint in Toronto?

The food is good at Aunties and Uncle but the place needs a thorough cleaning. I don't know when the last time they dusted in there. There were cobwebs in every corner, especially on the second floor kitchen area. I'm one for unpretenuous mom and pop style decore but if it feels dirty and looks dirty my question is, what's the level of cleaniness in the kitchen?

Best Bakery in Toronto

Croissants at Pain Perdu is usually burnt. I prefe Rahier or Jules.

Dipamo's closed, tried Ferraro instead

I agree with Fwagra. Unfortunately, Ferraro's is probably one of the worst tasting italian food I've ever eaten. Seven numbers is by far better choice. The service is great and the food is authentic mama's home cooking.

Korean Banquet Hall & Restaurant in GTA

kgirl, there isn't any decent korean banquet halls. Shilla is perhaps fine for a casual, mostly korean banquet but I wouldn't recommend them for a wedding, especially people who are not familiar with korean food. The place is frankly, tired looking and does desperately need a makeover. They were featured in a wedding show, not a makeover show. The food is adequate but nothing to rave about. Worst case, have a non korean meal but have lots of korean pastry on hand. Good luck.

Where to go with kids

I will be staying at the Westin Michigan Avenue.

Where to go with kids

I will be bringing the portable DVD. It'll buy me at least 2 hours. I think fine dining is out of the question but would like to eat at a decent restaurant. I enjoy Mom and Pop restaurants known for good food.

Where to go with kids

I will be visiting chicago for the first time next week with a 5 & 3 year old. Any suggestions for restaurants that are kid friendly? I'd like to visit a good dimsum/chinese & italian restaurant.

Craving Arugula

Lady York on Dufferin near Lawrence, carries baby arugula.

Kid Tolerant Restaurants in Toronto

Most kids like italian. I would suggest Seven numbers on eglinton or Marcello's (St.Clair/Dufferin). Both places have a good selection of food items and very kid friendly. I have two boys 5 and 3 and never worry about taking them there. Good luck.

Niagara Falls/Niagara on the Lake

There's a great bakery and cafe at Niagara Stone Rd, on your way to Niagara on the lake called "the pie plate". They make the most incredible pies and other excellent baked goods. They also make really tasty sandwiches.

scones

Mildred Pierce -makes great scones.

Korean food

A little too far off the georgraphic parameters. I wouldn't make a special trip to Shilla. I wouldn't consider it good Korean food. If you really want "good" Korean food you need to venture south to Korea Town, "Bloor/Christie". There's a number of excellent restaurants along the strip. Keep in mind, each restaurant has their specialty dishes.

Ready prepared gravy

What's the best ready made gravy?

Ready prepared Gravy

Does anyone know of a good ready prepared gravy. It's not always easy to make gravy out of beef dripping especially if you are making meatloaf. I've tried the dry packaged and canned and they were a disappointment.

Sushi Advice

Not sure if this is the place to recommend. It is good, but average. It's ranks along the lines of all other bento/sushi places. I consider this place good for a quick lunch. Good portions and easy on the pocket book. I would recommend a place up in Richmond Hill called Miyabe if you want good, fresh sushi.

Pie Plate-Niagara on the Lake

Anyone been to Pie Plate near Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Ketchup Chips

I enjoy eating ketchup chips from the Chippery. They make their own chips and top it with various flavours. Not cheap but good. I believe they have a permanent location in the financial district and occasionally at Yorkdale.

Orfus Road: Pho Place and Korean BBQ

Not sure what Pho place you are referring to across from Grande cheese. I believe you might be referring to the fast food chinese restaurant (the name escapes me). All I have to say it don't even think about it. It has got to be the worst food I've ever tasted. Cheap but disgusting. I'd rather go to Manchu Wok for fast food any day. The other place you were inquiring about is the Korean restaurant. I enjoy it. They have a wide selection of Korean and Japanese food. The prices are reasonable. You can cook your meat (Kalbi/Bulgogi) at your table. Friendly staff and set lunch menus are decent.

San Francisco Hound visiting this summer

Husky, I'm sure you will enjoy Toronto and what it has to offer. I love San Fran but in my opinion, i think you will be pleasantly surprised with our selection and prices are reasonable for what you get. It sounds like you might be looking for some home cooking. I would consider a couple of places in "coso italy". Here are some good mom and pop italian eateries in TO, (La Bruschetta Restaurant,1317 St Clair W, followed by ice cream at La Paloma. Also there's Marcello's on St. Clair and Dufferin (good portions, reasonable priced and friendly staff.) Make sure to get there early, there's usually a line up. They don't take reservations. You might want to try Mildred Pierce for dinner or brunch. If you want top notch chinese food, I suggest "Le Wai Heen" at the Metropolitan. Happy eating.

San Francisco Hound visiting this summer

I strongly disagree with wordsworth. I've been to San Fran a number of times and have relatives who live there and I think Toronto offers far more in terms of quality and quantity. In particular, we have an abundance of excellent Chinese and Italian restaurants that are considered top notch in the world. San fran is caught in a time warp when it comes to Chinese food. I would consider chinese restaurants in "San Fran" old world.

Breakfast in Niagara Falls

I take the kids annually to Niagara and Marineland. We usually stay at the Brock Hotel. I wouldn't recommend any of the big chain restaurants or the hotel restaurants. The last time we went to a restaurant place around the corner from the Brock hotel, we felt really ripped off. What do you expect from a tourist trap. I would recommend going to Tim Horton's and having breakfast there. The prices are consistent throughout the chains and you can get bagels/yohourt and sandwiches.

I miss "HO KING" !

No, the "New Ho King" is not the same owner. I believe this one is owned by the same people who own the Kim Moon Bakery.

I miss "HO KING" !

My family and I have gone to Ho King starting from the Dundas location to Stoney Creek. We made our trek from Toronto to Stoney Creek a dozen times a year. My brother would always make a special trip to Stoney Creek (Vancouver to Toronto to Ho King). It's a shame they finally closed down. Ruthy, we miss you. The "New Ho King" on Spadina, is a sad substitute. Ruthy, if you plan on opening up again, let us know.

Winterlicious ideas?

My two cents, I wouldn't recommend any restaurant to try out during Summerlicious or Winterlicious. My friends and I have all but given up. I find the portions are small, the service generally sucks and the food is medicore. For some reason as soon as the service staff realizes you are their for Summer or Winterlicious you get sub-standard service. I also heard, the servers had this time of year. The food is usually medicore and quite frankly after you order drinks and other sides, the price is comparable to ordering off the regular menu. If you want to truly experience a restaurant, order off the regular menu and go when it's not so busy.

chinese new year in chinatown

I'm not chinese but every time I've gone to kingsgarden, majority of the patrons have been chinese. A good sign. I would consider this one of my favourite chinese restaurant. Their dimsum is top notch. It is on the pricey side but very civilized (clean washrooms, no dishes clanging and no plastic tablecloths). You get what you pay for. One of my favourite dish is what they call their version of "the hamburger." It consist of Peking duck pancakes with fried tofu and marinated, melt in your mouth spicey beef. Very decadent. It is also kid friendly. My 4 and 2 year old, love the pan fried dumplings. I too recommend LWH, I highly recommend their Peking duck.

Korean restaurants

I agree with eco987. The food at Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is good. I think the best deal for the money. Aesthetically, not the nicest place but what do you expect for a meal that cost less than $10 including tip, per person. The dolsot bibim bap is well worth the trip. It actually has real meat. I find it perplexing that alot of Korean establishments substitute ground beef and lettuce for this dish. Shame on them.

Best Jamaican Patties - GTA

I agree, Randy's on Eglinton is far the best commercial patty I've tasted. Just be warned it is on the spicey side. They do not make mild patties. Everytime I've gone there the place is packed. The patties freeze beautifully. The price is great, at $12 for a dozen.

Korean restaurants

Worst Korean food I've ever had. We had my grandmother's 90th birthday party there. Most of the food was cold, lack of staff (we had to clear our own table)and serve our own dessert. I watched the show "I do, Let's eat", the same terrible food was served. I'd be embarrassed to have a wedding in that place. Needless to say, I'd never go back.
