How to make your own ground meats?

I recently went to a supermarket looking for ground turkey to make turkey burgers. I could not find anything that didn't have "natural flavorings" as an ingredient! How do you make your own ground meats? Turkey, pork, beef, chicken, etc. Thanks.

Chinese food in Marin county?

Hi all, we currently live in Mountain view, home of Castro St and 99 Ranch market and all sorts of good Asian and Chinese food. We are tentatively considering a move to Marin county, hopefully not too far away from Golden Gate bridge and SF, in the next few years because of work reasons. Is there a Chinese community up there? Are there pockets of good Chinese food and grocery stores? Thanks.

How do you wash plasticware and chopsticks in dishwasher?

Hi all, I have a 10 year old Whirlpool dishwasher that came with the house. I'm so irritated by it. In particular, I can't put chopsticks or straws in the utensil rack since the holes are too big and they would fall through the hole. Also plastic containers, even on the top shelf, always end up upended and filled with dirty water by the end of the cycle. Now that I have a toddler and another baby on the way, meaning a lots of plastic bowls, sippy cups, nipples and bottles, I need a dishwasher that doesn't require me to wash half the stuff by hand first. Thanks for your suggestions.

Alternative to organic meats?

Hi, My baby recently started to eat solid foods. This has me thinking more about healthy foods, and the effects that additives and contaminants such as growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, heavy metals, etc can have on a growing baby. As it is we rarely eat processed food and cook most of our meals from scratch. I don't want to go vegetarian with a young baby, but i'm concerned about the cumulation of bad things in animal flesh. Organic meats are so expensive! Are there alternatives? Is halal or kosher meats supposed to be better? Are some seafood choices better than others?
Thanks.

Where to get a yummy big cake? (Mt. View or vicinity)

Hi All,
I need to find a cake for a Baby shower of about 30 people for next friday. I have no idea how large a cake that needs to be. I'm thinking maybe a chocolate cake. What's a good place to get it from? I'm in Mountain View, but could drive to neighboring towns. Thanks.

Does authentic always = good and does un-authentic always = "un-good"?

when we were in mongolia, we lived in a ger tent. the food was cooked by our kind mongolian host, who spoke no english. the place had no electricity or running water. we starved! authentic? absolutely. delicious? no. would we go to a restaurant that reproduced that food authentically? absolutely not, at least not for the food.

Crab soup dumplings (Xiao long bao) in Bay Area?

I just noticed your favorite comfort food in your profile. What are the good places for Shengjian bao? I'm on the penisula, but will travel for good food.

Crab soup dumplings (Xiao long bao) in Bay Area?

Hi, has anyone eaten the crab soup dumpling (xiao long bao) at Joe's Shanghai in NY's Chinatown? As far as I'm concerned, those are the best, even better than the ones I tasted in Shanghai and I know a lot of finicky Shanghai old-timers who think the same. Sadly, it was even better a few years ago, before they changed their crab. (The rest of their food is terrible, don't bother.)

Is there anything in SF or the Bay Area that comes close? I was not impressed by HC Dumplings in Cupertino village (though many have posted positively about them). Thanks.

Burgers and brunch places in Mountain View (or vicinity)?

Hi all, we just recently moved to Mountain view from Manhattan. This area (including neighboring towns) obviously has great Asian food. Can anyone suggest some good diners or place for burgers/fries or brunch? Thanks.
