Authentic Northern-style Chinese Food

I'm taking a trip out to San Francisco next month and I'm really craving authentic northern-style Chinese food. I live in NYC, where cantonese and shanghainese style restaurants still rule Chinatown. What are the best northern-style Chinese restaurants in San Francisco? Where can I find dofu nao, the breakfast dish?

Thanks for the advice!

Sultan Grill on Coney Island Avenue @ Parkville

Meant to go to Bahar last night, but ended up trying Sultan Grill (a few doors down) instead. Sultan Grill has a Pakistani menu and a Turkish menu - we ordered the Chiken Tikka, Daal, Roti and Naan from the Pakistani menu.

The Chicken Tikka was very tender and had a great smokey flavor, the Daal was also very good...the lentils weren't as mushy as in most other daals i've had. The breads appeared to be freshly baked. All this food for about $20, tip and tax included.

If you live in the neighborhood, go check it out!

bakery on 23rd btw 6th and 7th

I walked by a below ground-level bakery on the south side of 23rd street between 6th and 7th avenues called Madeline Patisserie (i think?) Is that place new or have I just never noticed it before? They have a bunch of tarts and small cakes in the display case and some yummy looking chocolate and almond croissants. Is it any good?

Any good bars in Koreatown?

Are there any good bars in Ktown that serve Korean food/bar snacks?

Restaurant Ideas for Birthday Dinner

I'm looking for a fancy-ish restaurant for a small group...it's my special day so I want to splurge...but not crazy expensive (tasting menus only or $30+ for an entree) and not too stuffy...

I'm thinking about Babbo, Casa Mono, Blue Hill...what else??

Great restaurants, bakeries, cafes in Plateau neighborhood

thanks for all the recommendations!

Great restaurants, bakeries, cafes in Plateau neighborhood

I'm looking for some recommendations for great restaurants/bakeries/cafes in the Plateau/Mont Royal neighborhood. I'll be staying on Rue Rachel between St. Denis and St. Laurent.

Thanks in advance!

Kuma Inn tonight - any recs?

My favorites were the seared ahi tuna and mussels...oh, and you HAVE to have the panna cotta for dessert. It's amazing!

looking for an inexpensive/great dinner near Clinton St

nokitsch - i disagree about Clinton Street Baking Co. I went there with a group of 8 people and not a single person like their food. the burgers were overcooked, the chicken was dry, my shepard's pie was really oily. Maybe it was an off night

24th birthday dinner suggestion

I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive (entrees around and under $20), laid-back, quiet (where we don't have to yell over the music) restaurant for a birthday dinner with a few friends. Preferably below 14th street, any kind of cuisine. Any good recommendations? Thanks for the help!

B-day dinner party: Les enfants terribles or lil' frankies?

Attended a birthday dinner at Lil Frankie's this weekend. There were about 20 of us, at least. They seated us in the back room, so it wasn't as loud and crowded as the front of the restaurant. They did a pretty good job of bringing out all of our food at once, and relatively quickly. Oh, and they do take reservations.

Frozen Tamales?

Trader Joe's has pretty good frozen tamales...around $3 for two

Spicy and Tasty Dish Recs

Had a fantastic meal at Spicy and Tasty a few weeks ago, here are my recommendations:
-cold jelly chengdu style
-shredded chicken with spicy sauce
-shredded dry bean curd with celery
-sauteed pea sprouts w/ garlic (a nice break from all the spicyness)

burgers/sandwiches union square

Chat 'n Chew has good burgers and a good vibe

Terrific Hand Pulled Noodles in Sunset Park

I tried the vegetarian option - comes with green vegetables and a fried egg. It was great...the guy behind me in line ordered the beef noodle soup and that looked very good as well.

Poll on Best Pizza in Park Slope

Anthony's, hands down. Their pizza is fluffy and delicious. Pino's is pretty good too, and you get the chance to watch middle schoolers flirt with each other over pizza and soda. It's highly entertaining.

Terrific Hand Pulled Noodles in Sunset Park

For those of you out there who love Lanzhou hand-pulled noodles, I found a noodle shop in Sunset Park. It's called Lan Zhou Hand Pull Noodle, and it's at the corner of 60th street and 8th ave. It's a tiny little hole in the wall place, with a blue awning. There are 15 items on the menu: noodles with beef, lamb, pork chops or roast duck. There's also one vegetarian option. And nothing is over $6! The noodles are delicious. Go try it!

Soup Dumplings - Where else?

I second Shanghai Cafe - I've had both pork and crabmeat, both are excellent. Their pork buns are very good as well!

Cheap Lunch Spot around 26th and 6th ave

Anyone have some good suggestions of a cheap place for lunch around that area? No specific cuisine in mind. Thanks!

Momofuku Ssam is over-rated, go to Province!

Tried the steamed buns at Momofuku Ssam tonight. Decent, but way too much oil and sauce. The bottoms of my steamed buns were wet and soggy! Besides me, the restaurant was completely empty. Oh, besides the photo crew and the editors from the Dining Section of the NY Times. Does anyone know what Frank Bruni looks like? The photographers were taking pictures of a bunch of writer-types surrounded by their macbooks and ssams. Bizarre.

Try the buns at Province, at the corner of Church and Walker. So much better!! Tasty and at half the price. Too bad I don't live closer to Province, otherwise I'd eat there all the time.

Thai Noodle Soup

Are you talking about Tom Yum noodle soup?

The Farm/Aderley 2night w/out Reservation--How long should I anticipate waiting...

I went on a Friday night at around 8:30/9:00 without a reservation (party of two). We waited for about 10 minutes for a table. There were people behind us in line, and everyone seemed to be seated relatively quickly. The farm burger is delicious - tender and juicy. The trout is very very good as well.

Mall on Roosevelt in Flushing selling Chinese Food

I keep hearing about some strip mall on Roosevelt in Flushing that has really good Chinese food stalls....does anyone know the exact name and/or address of the place?
Thanks!

Quick and cheap eats around East Village

Any suggestions for a fast, cheap restaurant/diner/fast food place in the East Village? I like Rai Rai Ken, but I'd like to try something new.

Thanks!
