BBQ places on/near Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway

I have not been there in some time but the quintessential Blue Ridge BBQ is The Blue Ridge Pig in Nellysford, VA on Route 151. I would say that it is the only way to go.

Charlottesville sandwich takeout. Post camp dinner.

Hey, I have not been there for awhile but no one mentioned Bellair Market which is relatively close to the baseball field. I think that Little Johns is overrated. Now that I think about it, what about Bodo's Bagels. I also haven't been there for awhile but the quality/price ratio is unmatched. I think about an egg bagel with bacon often. Fortunately, I am no longer in the vicinity or I would eat them often to the detriment of my diet.

Must-Eats on a Saturday Afternoon?

I am headed to Atlanta for the weekend and I was just talking about The Porter. The outdoor patio is small but they do serve drinks and food all afternoon. I have also been to Decatur and I agree with the above recommendations. It is making me anxious to get down there and unwind.

Williamsburg Restaurants

Blue Talon and Fat Canary are very good. I prefer the Fat Canary but you should look at both menus. The Trellis is owned by the Blue Talon and I have not tried them. Another place that I plan to go to next when down there is La Yaca. It is well regarded and friends of mine speak highly about it.

Looking for a good chocolatiere

There is a very good chocolatier in Charlottesville who recently opened another story in Richmond, VA. It is called Gearhart's Fine Chocolates. I have been disappointed on a few holidays when I have gone there several days in advance and they were sold out of chocolates due to their popularity. Give them a try.

Liver in Richmond, VA

I have been on the road often recently but it seems to me that I had a very nice liver dish at Cafe Rustica in Richmond. You can give them a call and confirm that it is on their menu. I did not see an on-line menu for the restuarant. Also, the C & O Restaurant in Charlottesville has a very good liver dish in a mustard sauce.

Thanksgiving Dinner in Atlanta

Thanks for your help. I am often accused of being well=planned but, when I go to plan in advance, it seems that I am too far ahead in my thinking. As Thanksgivng approaches, I will definitely check out the website and see what the family thinks.

Mt. Pleasant, SC, best places

I somehow discovered Coco's Cafe which is located in the shopping center with Staples and Whole Foods. I enjoy going there everytime I visit Isle or Palms and Wild Dunes. It is French food and I have always enjoyed it. It is not the classic low country cuisine but try the flounder.

Knife Sharpeners in Richmond, Va

I think that I have seen Chefs Kitchen on Cary Street in Carytown advertise knife sharpening.

Thanksgiving Dinner in Atlanta

I have little experience with Atlanta but I will be going there on Thanksgiving Day. I land about noon. My son just started graduate school at GT. I would like the three of us to have a memorable, classic Atlanta Thanksgiving. Any suggestions on this would be welcome. We will be staying in Midtown.

Isle of Palms, SC

When we go to IOP, our date night place is often Coco's Cafe. It is French cuisine served in a strip mall where there is a Whole Foods and Staples. It is always enjoyable and I find it reasonably priced. I usually call for reservations since it is usually full.

pubs with good 'on tap' beer selections in charleston?

I am taking a chance here since I have never been there but aspire to get there soon but there is a Blind Tiger Pub or some such named institution on Broad St. close to the harbor that I have wanted to try but I usually have the kids with me. Check it out for me.

Southern Virginia Fine Restaurants

I am planning to drive to Farmville, VA to meet some family for dinner this weekend. Any suggestions regarding upscale dining in the area? I recall that there is a very nice place somewhere in southern virginia which has a year in the name but I can't recall the number and the town- I am hoping that it may be convenient to Farmville. Thanks.

Coco's Cafe, Mt. Pleasant

I visit Charleston annually and always make at least one stop at Coco's Cafe. For one vacation, I made reservations for three nights in a row. That may have been excessive! I find that it is always enjoyable but some nights are great while others are simply enjoyable. Overall, they do a very good job and I suggest that you look at their webpage for special events, etc.

Duck Soup in Richmond?

I think that Full Kee is the name of the place you are thinking of. I have never eaten there but I understand that duck is the thing to order there. From the restaurant, you could go a few blocks and go downtown on Monument or Broad. It is a 15 minute drive.

Happy hour in Richmond?

Indeed, it is a good idea to subvert the ABC laws and discuss Happy Hours among ourselves. There are many specials out there but I have trouble remembering them. Last time I checked, Can Can had half price beer on Sundays but I heard that the hours have been limited. They also offered some half price burgers, shrimp, and oysters. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday. Capital Ale House has specials on Sunday too. I see these specials periodically and would like to develop a list that assists the consumer and the restaurant. I am interested in any postings too.

NY-ers in Norfolk/VA Beach next weekend, need recs

I had a very nice dinner last Saturday night at One Fish-Two Fish. It has an open kitchen, nice view of marina, tables are spaced nicely, service was good. My she-crab soup was a bit on the cool side; salad was wonderful; entrees were very good; dessert was good but they were out of port to serve. Everyone appeared to be having a nice time. Overall, a very positive dining experience which I plan to repeat in the near future.

Richmond Happy Hour?

I hate to confess that I know more about this than I should but I have seen many groups come into Can Can for a happy hour. You can claim some space around the bar. 30 people would be a large group but they have weekly wine tastings which is certainly attended by more than 30 people. From 5-6, there may be happy hour price drinks too. The staff is very accommodating and they setting is upscale but casual.

Richmond meal itinerary for the weekend?

This is a case of "do what I say not what I do" but I have heard positive reviews of Verbena. A new place by Retreat Hospital so it is in the Fan but very close to the Museum District. I think that it has the "buzz" for the moment and it is worth a try. I suspect that you will hear about Karsen's which is on Cary Street but- I was there only once a few months ago- I found it underwhelming.

Dining solo in Williamsburg

The coffee shop across the street from Blue Talon is called Aroma or Aromas. It seems to be quite popular. They also serve food and have some tables inside and out on the sidewalk.

Dining solo in Williamsburg

I go solo to Williamsburg periodically and I usually eat at the Blue Talon or the Fat Canary. I usually eat at the bar and strike up a conversation with others- I get to meet the staff and talk with them too. I usually find it reasonably comfortable and interesting. Blue Talon is a bistro so casual at the bar is acceptable and Fat Canary also has a bistro feel. Also, I find making a reservation difficult since I do not always know I will be ready for dinner.

Happy Hour Specials in Richmond, VA

I recently relocated to Richmond, Virginia from Charlottesville, Virginia and I am finding that there are many happy hour specials at restaurants and bars that are unknown to me and other people. I am finding myself in places and think, "I should come back on Tuesday between 7 and 9 for the dinner or drink special." One reason that these specials are unknown is the laws that prohibit advertising of alcoholic drinks. It would be nice- in my opinion, if we developed a list of specials, locations, and quality which would serve as an underground guide. It would assist me in planning my evenings out. Does anyone have information about these specials that they are willing to share?

Boston Hound Seeks Help with Greensboro Recs...

I have not been to Greensboro in awhile but I had a very nice lunch at Ganache at few years ago. It is casual, good value and nice food. I would go back there again for the outdoor rooftop setting.

Great dınıng ın Charlottesvılle

I noticed that no one mentioned the new restaurant Boeheme on Market Street. I haven't been there. It looks very nice but we all know that looks can be deceiving. Does anyone have some input about it?

Best in Charleston SC

We are going to Charleston in a few weeks and our favorite place is in Mt. Pleasant- Coco's Cafe. Rated highly by Fodors which is how we found it several years ago. Located in a strip mall which is an issue but I am not sure that you can beat the price and quality. We have eaten at The Wreck, etc. but keep returning to Coco's Cafe. Look at their on-line menu (with prices) to see what you think.

Downtown C'ville - where to eat?

A new place very close to the Inn at Court Square is called Boheme on Market St. I have not tried it but it looks fine- nicely decorated. Fleurie will probably be recommended to you- I have not been there often since I didn't like it very much. Fuel Co. is another upscale place- although it is located in a gas station/convenience store. It has been reviewed favorably in the Washington Post. It is close to Inn at Court Square. Do not forget to go to the C&O if not for dinner then an Irish coffee.

Eats in Bristol, TN/VA and the surrounding area (<75 mi.)?

I have been to Hi-Lo burger- it has lots of character. Of course, a large part of the character is that it is a drive-in and you are eating in the car. So, character depends on your wheels. The Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon is upscale. A place I always wanted to go but never got to when it was open is a restaurant that is in an old house about two blocks from the Martha Washington Inn on Main St. It has old charm from the outside and I have seen the upscale menu but never eaten there since it has not been open when I have been down there. Bristol is virtually the only place on Earth where I recommend chain restaurants since, as a rule of thumb, there is no decent local food. Troutdale- okay but pricey; Ridgewood- fine but is off the beaten path. Even the Krispy Kreme closed in Bristol- now that is a low blow. I have strong feelings about "dining" in Bristol and I have never found a place that stands out. I know there is the saloon/tavern place on State Street- okay and you can get a beer; KP Duty- okay. Good luck in Bristol- every year or so someone realizes that they need a new restaurant in town but they rarely stay open long. The place that has the most character and been around the longest in the Burger Bar off State Street. Oh, oh, don't get me started about Bristol.

On Padma and Her Cellulite

For someone who "doesn't have any problem with her perceived arrogance" you should definitely re-read your statemnent. You are saying that about someone that you call a "professional" but yet trashes the general public on national television. I don't really understand how you can use the word professional to describe someone of her level. Whatever, she may have had 7 years of cooking experience, that does not make up for the rediculous comments that she had to make for the people eating the disgusting ice cream she made (calming choclate?? BLAH! get some creativity!) SHE IS A LINE COOK! It is not even as if she has 7 years experience running a kitchen. NOB HILL IS NOT FINE DINING. I'm so glad she is gone!!! She mind as well work at McDonalds. She could salt the fries.

Best Sandwich in Richmond?

I agree with assessment that NY Deli does not pass muster- go there for a drink in the evening. Chiocca's at 425 Belmont St., near Cary Street, is where I take people to impress them with a sandwich. They only serve sandwiches. Atmosphere? Probably would not pass contemporary health code. A solid place for a sandwich, a draft, and hangout.
