Where I can I get a big cake for a party (UES)?

Food Emporium actually makes a tasty cake if you're not looking for ultra fancy.

Bar/pub/drink only recommendations

Thalia on 50th & 8th Ave. is fairly lively with good cocktails, several brews and snacks.

Child-friendly dinner near W. 50th & 9th?

If you're primarily interested in space (no pun intended) and kid-fun, rather than food quality, there's always Mars 2112 on Bway & 51st.

A good restaurant near 46th and 12th?

Daisy's is definitely delish. If it's too crowded, the Landmark Tavern across the street is also nice.

Tabla Bread Bar

Just read in The Times that "Tabla Bread Bar is no more, as all of Tabla, upstairs and down, now has an à la carte menu that includes many Bread Bar dishes."
Anyone know if the physical bar still exists for cocktails and appetizers?

Cucumber cocktail?

Thanks again to you all! Looks like I'll definitely be getting my full serving of vegetables on this trip.

Cucumber cocktail?

First trip to San Fran coming up in a couple weeks and am looking forward to some handcrafted cocktails. Can anyone suggest a good cucumber cocktail locale? Aziza, I'm guessing? Any others, especially in the downtown area? Thanks.

Yep, that's my favorite too :)

What are your favorite places in Manhattan to have some drinks?

Tabla Bread Bar. Very good fresh-ingredient cocktails, plus fresh made flatbreads and onion rings.

Lunch spot near 43rd & 6th

If that day is Mon - Thur and the weather is nice, head over to Moishe's falafel cart on 46th & 6th, then eat out back at Bryant Park (don't forget to grab a plastic fork and napkins).

The Red Flame Diner, 44th just east of 6th, is a good traditional NYC diner.

NYC ICY?

I wanted to like that place, but it was so sterile and the help seemed often clueless and they were out of chocolate the time I really, really wanted chocolate.
That stretch of 10th Ave. is pretty interesting these days in terms of what's opening, closing and trying to stay afloat.

OLD Broadway Cottage on Bway and 103rd??

I went there all the time, back in '88-'90. That free wine had a flavor one does not forget. Low-end Chinese food seems increasingly harder to find these days. I know in Hell's Kitchen they're disappearing at a rapid rate.

Quiet, clubby drink

The Bentley Hotel, 62nd & York, has a quiet and nice bar/restaurant on the 21st floor. Good view as well.

Incredible grilled cheese?

Say Cheese, on 9th & 45th. Quirky hole-in-the-wall but with a variety of good grilled cheese options.
Googie's, on the UES, used to have the best, R.I.P.

Opinions on Xunta?

“Eh,” as kci put it, pretty much sums up our experience. Atmosphere was low-key (but, ok, it was a Wed. in mid-July). We got there at 9:00, the front of the place was full and they were not seating people at the large tables in the back so we ended up at the bar, which was fine. Service was fast and the bartender appropriately offbeat. Sangria was thankfully potent and tasty. The dates wrapped in bacon were indeed excellent, the best of the tapas we had, salty and sweet. And the grilled chorizo was just right with a delicate, crisp casing. But the sauteed spinach and garlic was a soggy mess, the goat cheese, sliced into extra-thin triangles, was forgettable, and the unsweetened corn bread with tomato, cheese and prosciutto was disastrous, with each ingredient more bland than the next. I suspect a weekend night with lucky picks from the menu would make for a good evening. Ours was about a C+.

Thanks - not totally restricted. I've an out-of-towner visiting and want to give her a taste of the Village vibe.

Planning on tapas in the Village tonight and thinking of trying Xunta. Anyone know how the crowd is on a Wed. night, recent experiences, or better ideas? Thanks!

Best after-work traditional margarita?

Any suggestions for the best non-frozen, non-fruity, classic margarita in a fun, yet not overly-noisy atmosphere? Downtown or midtown. Something similar to El Rey del Sol is what I'm imagining. Thanks!

Agreed. I also like Millie's pierogi, crayfish from Delta Grill, lasagna from Manganaro's, olive twists from Amy's Bread. It will be interesting to see if any of the new restaurants weigh in with anything interesting.

Takeout from Citarella. Not sure if they have it year-round, but the past few Passovers have been pretty tasty.
