Sure, I say give it a shot. The lady at the next table had a yummy-looking quesadilla, and the salads looked good too. Maybe the trick for avoiding the noise is to go for early dinner as opposed to 8, when we went. I'll go early next time.

Last night my mother and I tried out the Tavern. It looks pretty much the same as it did when it was Honey's, as far as I can tell. There were 2-3 couples, and the rest of the tables were families. We opted to start with the fried zucchini, which they were out of so we chose the artichoke fritters. I liked them very much, though didn't care for the heavy, thick ranch dressing that came on the side. For mains, I ordered the sundried tomato pizza with garlic, spinach and black olives. My mother ordered the meatloaf with garlic mashers on the side (except they were out of the mashers too, so she chose fries). We waited, and waited, and waited some more. We saw people who had arrived after us receive their mains. Then a huge loud group arrived, and from then on we couldn't hear a thing above the din. Unreal noise level, and completely unbearable. I asked them to please wrap up our mains which had not yet arrived so we could eat at home in peace. Of course it is such a small place that any noise issues are understandable, and the waitress apologized. All the staff were very pleasant throughout, actually.
On to the food itself... my pizza was just eh. It was a good size, I liked the garlic level and the spinach, but far too much tomato sauce- I would have preferred the sauce OR the sundried tomatoes. My cat liked it though. My mother reports that her meatloaf was good but the fries were "gross," (not a word she ever uses) "overcooked/ burned, very thin and basically inedible." She would not return but I probably would with friends, to try out some different dishes.

I miss those smallish jars of "natural" maraschino-ed cherries. They made me feel a lot better about eating a jar at a time.

It's called Tavern at Croton Landing. I've been too chicken to give it a shot, also I kind of miss Honey's. Maybe I'll go in and take one for the team this week..
First REAL Food memory
Sitting at the kitchen table with my parents and refusing to eat oatmeal... I've never eaten it since.
Going to the ice cream parlor with my mom and sharing a banana split, just because.
My grandma's house that smelled like shortbread.
My dad and I staying over at my aunt's house, and the next morning my dad and uncle rushing out the door in their weekly who-buys-the-donuts-first competition... I'd give at least a few of my digits to be any of these places again.
What is up with the cheese sandwiches?
I never got a plain cheese sandwich for lunch- it was either cheese and marmite or cheese and relish. I still love a cheese sandwich, pretty much anytime- I had one for breakfast today- but my 2 varieties these days are sharp cheddar with tomato, or american with mayo and mustard.
When did you stop liking sugar?
I was just noticing last week how much my sugar intake/ craving has decreased. Now if I crave anything it will be salty/ savory- chips, cheese, mustard. My father throughout his whole life was able to ignore chocolate- he would buy Halloween candy for the trick or treaters, and it would still be in his fridge the next summer. I always envied that, and now it seems the older I get (a mid-30-something-th birthday tomorrow......) the more I turn into him.

I like their horseradish spread and wasabi horseradish spreads quite a bit, and I always have to bring home some cranberry horseradish spread for my friends- they eat it by the jarful. Just last week I discovered there's a new outlet store down the road from my vacation house! Huzzah! The sour cherry is their best jam, in my opinion. I generally skip all the sweet sauces like chocolate, dulce de leche etc.
Do you drink bottled water (even if the tap water is safe)?
I drink both NY tap and bottled. Individual bottles are easier to keep in the fridge and freezer and grab when I go out. Once in the car I never remember to take the bottle with me, since it's usually empty by the time I get to wherever I'm going. But when I'm home or at others' homes I'll always drink tap.
Where do like to go to sit outside and eat in Westchester/Putnam
The view at Henry's definitely outweighs the food, IMO (Indian Point notwithstanding). We had lunch there last weekend. The service was unfortunate, but the manager was very nice. I wish I had gone on classical guitar day!

Today for lunch I ate a Stouffer's mac and cheese that defrosted for 11ish hours in my car last week when I forgot to bring it into my office. So far, so good. I'd eat that Hot Pocket.
Edited to add I did refreeze it, it hadn't been sitting out since then or anything. :p

Jurassic Park, when the kids return to the visitors' center after being chased by dinosaurs for 2 days, chow down on the big spread of food, and look at each other and smile.
Day Night Day Night has a lot of food scenes- pizza, hot pretzel with mustard, candy apple... I wanted to be eating all those things while I watched the film.

I am now, but the Hungarian side of my family's been going to to the YME for years. You're right though- nothing like being told "pick out the best pigs' feet" to make a 10 year old go the complete opposite way.

Where to find Coke with sugar, not HFC
It's not Westchester, but I got some at the Foodmart International on Rt 59 in Spring Valley, in Rockland. They had Sprite and Fresca with real sugar too.
Attitudes toward restricted diets - your experiences?
I get the 'it's too bad you don't eat meat' regularly as well. Variations include 'You can eat that- it just has a little chicken in it,' 'Why can't you eat lobster? Lobsters are ugly,' and 'This was a vegetarian pig. heh heh heh.'
Some people can't let anything out of the ordinary (though unless they live under a rock, they must be aware some people exist who have dietary restrictions) go by without a comment. Ignore 'em and do what you have to do.

I've used it, and never meant it with a negative connotation. I just think it's a cool word.

I thought the back-to-the-wall phenomenon was universally known as the Power Seat. But Godfather Seat is a good one too. :)
Wine Doggy Bag Law
It can't be gotten into in transit if it's in the trunk, well, at least under normal circumstances. My cousin (in NY) threw a bridal shower a few years ago and was told she couldn't take out the opened wine bottles from the 15 or so tables, even though she had paid for them. We packed 'em in the trunk and took our chances.

I'm afraid I don't have a find to tell you about, since I don't live or eat in Danbury (hence my search, resulting in this thread), but I'm spending my birthday there this year and would like to investigate your Mexican fave.

Our reasons for not liking the experience had nothing to do with being vegetarian, because as I said, I enjoyed my entree. As far as it being a special request, that's why I mention it when I make the reservation. All they have to say is no.
I did also have the Badminton Cup, and couldn't get through half of it. We must agree to disagree. :) Glad you had a good time though.

Thank you, Marge! I drive past this place every day and only just noticed yesterday that it wasn't actually Caruso's anymore. I'll be sure to give it a try. Do you know if they take credit cards?
vegan and or vegetarian in the city
I second Candle 79- I still daydream about their seitan piccata. Also second Pure Food and Wine- get the tasting menu.

We just went for dinner last night. Overall impression.... B-/C+.
I had told the reservationist when I called that I am vegetarian, and was told it was no problem. When I requested a vegetarian main course, since one was not listed on the restaurant week menu, the server told me there were no substitutions and I would have to pay full menu price for my entree. But upon asking at the front desk, she came back and informed me it was not a problem anymore. Okay then.
First course- my mother and I both had the spaetzle and mache salad (minus bacon, for me). I enjoyed the tiny undressed salad far more than the overpowering spaetzle.
Main course- I had vegetable ragout in yogurt sauce, which was pleasant but I thought better suited for the fall. My mother had the seared pike which she declared wonderful.
Dessert- I had the chocolate dome with cherries and yogurt foam... eh. My mother's coffee toffee creme brulee disappeared very fast though.
Our main server forgot one of the drinks until just before the mains arrived, and didn't come back to see how anything was, in an almost-empty room. The couple at the next table had a similar experience- 'Isn't she unpleasant?' said the woman next to me. We found all of the other service staff to be very polite and efficient.
The music was kept at an uncomfortably loud level throughout.
Upon paying the bill we each got a $25 coupon to be used for a future lunch visit, but we're not going back. Anyone want the coupons?
(Edited to add that I think everyone gets the coupons, since they say 'Thank you for joining us for Restaurant Week.' I don't believe they were given to us because we had issues.)
