New In Rowland Heights--All Taiwanese All The Time

I had breakfast here not too long ago and found the food to be on the bland side. My companions kept mentioned how Four Seas was better. It is a great location for the kind of food they serve though.

Berkeley chowhound seeks Orange County recs for this wkend

The first place that comes to mind is Fukada in Irvine. They use a lot of fresh healthy ingredients. You get some real bang for your buck if you get their lunch specials. It's been awhile but you can get a combination of your choice of udon or soba served hot or cold and another choice selection of something over rice (unagi don, curry don, etc.). I highly recommend their unagi don over brown rice!

Another place that comes to mind is Veggie Grill near UCI. I believe there's also a location in the Irvine Spectrum. As you might be able to tell from the name, it's a vegetarian restaurant- that serves up some tasty fare! Their entrees consist of mock meat sandwiches that taste a whole lot better than that description sounds. Some of my favorite items are the sides though: sweet potato fries and steamed kale. If you go to the shopping center where Veggie Grill is located on a Saturday morning than you can catch the Irvine Farmer's Market.
Bakery wise I can think of 85C. Be warned-the place will probably be packed. It's the only location here in the US (it originated in Taiwan). Their Rose Cream Cheese Bun is my favorite.
I just realized that all my recommendations are in Irvine....I guess that's because I went to school there so it's the area of the OC that I'm most familiar with!

Where to take my family in Pasadena?

I would recommend Zelo's in Arcadia (near Monrovia). It's a great neighborhood spot with great cornmeal crust pizza. You get full eating good food at a reasonable price!

Best Bakeries - canneles, french macarons, asian sweets

Their macaroons (not sure if its the kind with one or two "o"s) are rich and delicious. My favorite are the hazelnut ones and the sea salt caramels are popular too, pretty much a the pastries I've had here are! For Asian sweets I think of Phoenix (plenty of locations throughout the SGV).

Any late night Szichuan or Vietnamese in the SGV?

Noodle World in Alhambra is open until 1AM. They have a lot of noodle dishes on their menu (as you can probably gather from the name) and they have a selection of pho. It's definately not the greatest pho you'll ever have, but may be sufficient if you have a late night craving.

Pumpkin everything....That time of the year!

I was going to suggest the pumpkin pancakes at Mimi's! My sister ordered them this past weekend and took a couple of bites. They're pretty tasty especially with the apples that come on top of them.

Vegetarian options in Old Town - Pasadena

I was going to suggest Azeen's Afghani Restaurant since I remember them having a vegetarian section on their menu but they will not be open until 5:30 on Sunday. I've never been to Tibet Nepal House but their lunch buffet has gotten plenty of praise and has plenty of vegetarian options. My favorite restaurant in the Old Town area is probably Le Grande Orange on Raymond and there are couple of vegetarian options there as well.

my girlfriend's in NY until wednesday. Time to feast in her absence! Any tips?

I got this idea from DrBruin's recommendation-perhaps you could get some dining companions and head to Koreatown for some all you can eat (AYCE) Korean BBQ. Those places are definately not vegetarian friendly and is cheaper than Fogo de Chao (I've never been so I can't say that concretely!). Since money isn't an issue in your case, perhaps you can even go to place that has higher quality meat that isn't AYCE (like Park's BBQ which is highly recommended by other CHers).

I think "sometimes prone to long lines" is a bit of an understatement! I agree with everything else though.

I second that! The neopolitcan is great since I have trouble deciding on which flavor I want.

101 Noodle Express Beef Roll with Pics

It looks like there's a 101 Noodle Express opening in Arcadia in the space where Nice Time Deli used to be. Our friends and family were quite fond of Nice Time Deli so I hope 101 Noodle Express will be good enough to soften the blow of not having it around!

Beef brisket - where to find in SGV?

There's an old fasioned butcher shop (as you can tell by the name) in Sierra Made called Taylor's in Sierra Madre. I heard it can be pricey there but the meat is supposed to be pretty high quality.

SGV recs before I move to the westside!

Perhaps you should make a trip to Newport Tan Cang Seafood restaurant on Las Tunas for some Vietnamese inspired Chinese food. The dish with the filet mignon cubes and their house lobster are highly recommended. (FYI, this place is cash only). Although I really like Golden Deli, I think Pho 79 makes a better bowl of pho.

Chow Fun in SGV

There a place in Hacienda Heights called Malan and all their noodles are made in house. They have several noodle shape options for their dishes. I tried their wide, thick noodles with my house beef noodle soup and it was kind of like eating dumpling skins! Anyhow, perhaps you can go there to see if they have what you want.

Along the 210 east of Pasadena

Zelo's in Arcadia (near Monrovia) for some tasty, unique cornmeal crust pizza. There are a plethora of frozen yogurt places if you're into that. Sinbala and Genki Living are in the same plaza on Baldwin & Duarte (also in Arcadia) and offer some pretty refreshing shaved ice. Peach Cafe used to only serve dinner on Friday evening-perhaps you can see if they still do. They always have a great dessert selection. Merengue is a Cuban bakery down the street from Peach. I don't think it's as good as Portos but they have quite a selection. That part of Monrovia will most likely be pretty crowded because of the street fair/ farmers' market but maybe you could kill some time there as well!

Rice balls and Ginger Bean Milk at Yung Ho Tou Chiang

Is this the same as the Four Seas in Hacienda Heights? It sounds like the same place. I went to the one in Hacienda Heights recently and they had quite a large menu. It was all in Chinese so thank goodness my mom was with us!

I was going to recommend Diddy Riese as well. If your son goes to UCLA, I'm sure he will become very familiar with this place.

I would save some room for dessert at Daisy Mint and get some fried ice cream. Yum Le Grande Orange at the Del Mar metro stop. I like their swordfish tacos and sangria but there are plenty of other options. Also in the Old Town is Azeen's Afghani restaurant which I think is worth a visit.
Europane is a great spot: the egg salad sandiwch and pastries are really terrific. The Dianne Salad at the Green Street Restaurant is popular and tasty.
Welcome back to Pasadena!

Yeah-99 Ranch was going to be my suggestion. Any Chinese supermarket ought to have it though. Cold noodles are one of my favorites when it's hot.

best vegetarian in sgv/pasadena?

Bean Sprout Cafe in Arcadia is pleasant and the food is pretty good. Vegetarian Wok and Gourmet Vegetarian are both in San Gabriel are the vegetarian Chinese restaurants that I like the most. These are all vegetarian restaurants. Most dumpling places will have vegetarian dumplings. My mom (a vegetarian) is fond of the vegetable dumplings at Din Tai Fung and Nice Time Deli.

Orange County Favorites

Two of my favorite eateries from when I went to UCI are on this list-Fukada and the Veggie Grill. Don't be concerned about the latter being a vegetarian spot, it's terrific. Their sweet potato fries are delish. Sidestreet Cafe in Costa Mesa is another place I would recommend-good, hearty breakfasts and lunches at a great price
