SOPHISTICATED COCKTAIL BARS

1886 in the Raymond restaurant in Pasadena

Pasadena and Arcadia Help

If you're into izakaya, there are two in the area that are less than a year old-Hinotori in Arcadia and Oto-Oto Izakaya Japonaise. Both are pretty solid, Hinotori has a homier, neighborhood feel while Oto-Oto is hip and modern.
My favorite ramen in the area is Hakata Ramen Shinsengumi in Rosemead. This place isn't big though and is usually on the crowded side.

Italian in Old Town Pasadena

There's the ever popular (though not on Chowhound) Mi Piace which is really more style than substance. It's walking distance in the center of Old Town. Don't ask them to cut a cake for you btw unless you want to be hit with the cake cutting fee!

your favs in rowland heights

I was in the Class 302 plaza the other day and was tempted to get snow but didn't think I'd be able to convince my companions that it was worth it despite the cold weather! I love the snow at Class 302 but I don't find the rest of their menu particularly worthwhile.

Where to get a Hot Toddy in LA?

Not in LA but if you ever find yourself in the Pasadena area and having a hankering for a hot toddy, 1886 inside the Raymond restaurant has one on their menu and will probably even make you one if it's not on their menu!

I'm looking for Indian food in Pasadena - with good service and decent food

Ahh ok-what about Radhika's in South Pasadena? I haven't been there myself but it was in the running for a birthday dinner (which I ended up hosting at home). It looks like it might have the ambiance you're looking for and there's booze!

I'm looking for Indian food in Pasadena - with good service and decent food

Bhanu Indian Grocery and Cuisine in San Gabriel (near the Pasadena border) has delicious food at a great price. Service has been friendly the few times I have been there, but this is inside a grocery store so it may not be the atmosphere you're looking for. Definitely worth checking out for some yummy Indian food though!

Btween Pasadena and the El Cap theatre

Some friends of mine made the same trek to see the Nightmare Before Xmas at El Cap last weekend. I'm not sure of the logistics but they ate at Salt's Cure and this group of finicky eaters were very pleased!

First time in LA- List in post: Which restaurants would you recommend?

I'm not the one who recommended Good Girl Dinette but I have eaten there and enjoyed it! The person who recommended this place raved about the curry chicken pot pie which I think is worth checking out.

First time in LA- List in post: Which restaurants would you recommend?

I like Good Girl Dinette, but it's more of a modern twist on Vietnamese food in case you're looking for something more traditional. You might want to check out some banh mi places when you're in the San Gabriel Valley. Our go to place is Banh Mi Che Cali in San Gabriel (on San Gabriel Blvd & Las Tunas Drive). These sandwiches are pretty inexpensive so even if it confirms that you are indeed not a fan of banh mi, at least you didn't have to pay much to figure that out!

Winging it in K-Town?

I think the sizzling rice soup at DGM is worth checking out!

Here are the websites for Mother Moo and Carmela:
http://www.mothermoo.com/
http://www.carmelaicecream.com/
I believe you can also get Carmela at the South Pasadena Farmers Market on Thursday.

Cathy's Bakery is in San Gabriel and they also have a branch called Ellie's Bakery in the Arcadia Supermarket Plaza. It used to be where we would go for Chinese pastries and bread when I was younger before there were so many Chinese bakery options! My mom and her friends like their cakes with puff pastry layers (and one with pudding, taro, AND puff pastry layers). I'm not a fan of puff pastry or taro so I can't vouch for those! Cloverleaf is in Temple City on Las Tunas-I've never been into the store itself but have heard that their bread is comparable to 85 degrees. I had this many layer cake from there that was very tasty!

SetteBello in Pasadena

While I was at SetteBollo, a family sitting nearby ordered a nutella banana dessert pizza. It looked pretty decadent but I find that it can be hard to stomach a dessert like that after eating something substantial like pizza.

You might want to walk to D'odici Desserts nearby for some coffee and cheesecake. The cheesecake is light and fluffy, similar to the ones you get at places like JJ Bakery.

You may want to check out Mother Moo, Carmela (another artisanal ice cream shop), or Bulgarini the day you have lunch at Sea Harbor. Mother Moo and Carmela get compared to each other, but I think you would be more comfortable at Mother Moo since they have places to sit and easier parking (also unlike Carmela, they accept credit cards). Plus, it's in the teeny town of Sierra Madre-a town I find rather charming. If you do go to Scoops-do try the brown bread flavor!
Since you mentioned that you'd like to try some bakeries, maybe you could check out some Chinese bakeries like JJ Bakery, Cloverleaf, or Cathy's Bakery since there are quite a few that aren't too far from Sea Harbor. I don't know much about Cincinnati but I thought these sort of bakeries might be scarce there!

Pasadena area - lunch date

Noir Wine and Food's menu sounds like it fits what you're looking for. They have an outdoor patio as well. http://www.noirfoodandwine.com/

There's also La Grande Orange which has a good vibe. Great sangria and ambiance.

Potato Salad

Market Grill's potato salad was what came into my mind too until I saw that the OP was seeking creamy potato salad!

Best Vegetarian Dishes in Non-Vegetarian SGV Chinese?

Chang's Garden is very accommodating to vegetarians which is why my mom (a vegetarian) likes taking groups of vegetarians and omnivores there. They make a string bean roll that is always gobbled up by the veggie and meat eaters alike when we go there.

What's the Bakery like 85C in Arcadia/SanMarino area?

Cloverleaf in Temple City perhaps?

Culinary Tours of Los Angeles?

I'v heard of this company below that does culinary tours in different parts of L.A. and the L.A. area

Top Five L.A. Sandwiches?

I don't think I've tried enough sandwiches to make up a top give, but I highly recommend the egg salad sandwich at Europane in Pasadena!

Challah or Brioche Bread in Arcadia/Pasadena Area or north OC?

I found a french toast recipe that I wanted to try that involves a loaf of challah or brioche bread. This isn't bread we typically use at home and I don't recall seeing it at the supermarket or any of the bakeries I've been to (then again I haven't really paid attention either!) So I was wondering where I can pick up a loaf of french toast worthy bread!

I live in Arcadia but work in Brea so hopefully there's a convenient place around these areas!

Afternoon Tea - where is most similar to Langham, Pasadena?

The Four Seasons Tea Room in Sierra Madre has a warm ambiance and seems to fit what you're looking for. Be sure to get some scones if this is the place you choose!

Dumpling House in Temple City is closing

My favorite scallion pancakes were from Dumpling House as well! Now that they're gone, Earthen in Hacienda Heights has the top spot for me scallion pancake wise.

craving a ginger cocktail

Second the Varnish, also 1886 in Pasadena (inside the Raymond). You can just let the bartenders know that you want a gingery drink and they'll take care of you!

Brunch recommendations in Monrovia?

I second the Peach Cafe rec. Jake's Roadhouse actually has some decent breakfast fare too.

where to find double skin (aka yang jiang pi or liang zhang pi?) in SGV

I think it is liang as in double since the dish involves the meat and veggies being in two sheets of clear noodle sheets. I had this dish at Earthern in Hacienda Heights over the weekend and it was pretty tasty, appropriate for the summer weather! It tasted like they use some wasabi in their sauce.
House of Mandarin Noodle (run by the former owner of Mandarin Noodle Deli on Las Tunas) on Temple City Blvd and Lower Azusa should also have this dish since I know it was on their menu when they ran their operation on Las Tunas. I used to have lunch there rather often a few years ago when I worked around the corner from it and the liang zhang pi was a favorite dish of one of my bosses.

Supreme Vege Cuisine New In Arcadia

I heard that Supreme Vege Cuisine was opened by a chef who used to work at the place in the Dahua plaza.

Battle of the Potstickers

I really liked the potstickers at Mandarin Noodle Deli in Temple City. I haven't eaten at the location they moved to from Las Tunas location but hopefully it's as good as I remember!

Vegetarian in Orange County?

There's Veggie Grill near UCI which is all vegan/vegetarian which has pretty good mock meat sandwiches. I'm partial to their sides though (sweet potato fries and steamed kale). I've heard that Native Foods in Costa Mesa is good as well. I also remember there being a vegetarian Thai restaurant in Irvine too, I think it's called Wheel of Life.

daikokuya arcadia open!

Thanks for the head's up! I wouldn't have known there was one in Arcadia otherwise. I'd be more gung ho about getting some ramen there but it's so freakin' hot at the moment!
