Okay, I have not had a chance to check any new places since but did stop by Jerry's for some MBS since I was in the neigborhood. With N&A's still fresh on the palate, I realized that N&A's was far superior to Jerry's. Still will order the MBS at Jerry's but certainly may seriously consider the extra drive. Thanks for the tips, fellow houndies.

Look forward to checking out the others. Cheers.

Dinner in Santa Monica

Ivy at the Shore is a great place for a visitor. Great scene and food. Good wine list. Very generous on the cocktails so use moderation.

K & L Wines coming to L.A.

What do you mean be affluent? I usually buy wine in the $30 to $80 range. I think that is a reasonable range for decent wine. I love bargins as much as anyone and the staff at 20/20 has led me to them.

I am not sure 20/20's margins are all that different. I buy wine directly from DuMol and what I have paid at 20/20 for the same wine was not different (if it is in stock).

How are they going to staff K&L? The one thing I like about 20/20 is their extensive knowledge base. A good wine store is nothing without good, knowledgable staff.

I do look forward to K&L coming to LA. I just don't know if I would be willing to go all the way to Hollywood.

Good point although it does not explain why Fromins and Jerry's puts in chicken automatically. Now that I am in the know at N&A's, however, I will always get the chicken. Forgot about the C&B parking lot. Thanks for the reminder.

Well, tried Nate & Al's today. Starting to come down with the flu so timing could not have been better. We can contemporaneously test its medicinal value.

Ordered a cup because I wanted to have a half sandwich. I got it with noodles. It was pretty good. The broth had good flavor and the noodles had great texture. The MB itself was good although it was very hot. Combined with not feeling great, I don't think I got the the most of the flavor. I did not get to taste any chicken because apparently, one must specifically ask for it. Why it is then called Chicken MB is a bit confusing. Therefore, I cannot comment on that.

Will I ultimately schlep all the way there from BW and deal with parking if I get the urge, I don't know. Certainly, if I am around, I would stop by. I will give it another go before I ultimately decide, however. With chicken next time.

The Pastrami was great. Now that might be worth the trip.

On to Greenblats. Cheers.

Santa Monica/Westwood Restaurant Needed

Since you are recommending Houston's, you should throw in Bandera at Wilsire & Barrington (open for dinner only). I think Bandera is the chain's best concept.

You should give Off Vine a try.

Cheap and good in Pasadena

I second All India Cafe. Arguably the best naan in the entire region. When I worked in Pasadena, I was there at least once a week. Their WLA restuarant has a lunch buffet so they might have one there.

Favorite Pie @ Pie n' Burger (Pasadena)

Last month there was a thread on Banana Cream pies at PNB. New York Times magazine voted PNB as best...firestorm shortly ensued amongst ChowHounders. Don't know how to add the thread. Give that one a shot.

Good, cheap dinner near the Getty.

If you get on San Vicente in BW, you may want to consider Gaucho Grill. It's next to Pizzicotto (which is a great recommendation, btw).

Best Carne Asada Burrito In West LA Santa Monica?

I concur on Lares.

Italian on the west side

You may want to give Pecorino at wirl. In the old Zax location in BW. A little pricey but good wine selection, pasta and fish. The service is fantastic. I entertain there at least once a week for lunch and dinner.

You may also want to try Divino in the Barrington Village in BW. I have never been there but for years people have been raving about it to me. Anyone have an opinion on Divino?

Great food gift to take to San Francisco from LA?

I was referring to the Stadium Dogs. I try to avoid the ovverpaid dogs with all the "growth hormones". Wait, that's not LA....

Cheers.

Santa Monica advice, please

I don't know where in SM you will be but Lares on Pico near Stewart is a good place. A couple of places near Third Street Promenaded are Border Grill and La Serenata de Garibaldi, both on 4th street. The latter two are less "hole in walls" and pricier than a typical Mexican joint. I am sure more suggestions will be forthcoming.

Cheers.

With all the fines you collect, you can buy a lot of Dodger Dogs for Babette to send up.

I took no offense to Eric's reply...just playful banter. Actually, I am really excited to check out these places. If Jerry's is on the lower end, I look forward to the some really good MBS. Cheers.

Wow EricV, such biting humor. Please tell me you are not one of those EastSider Foodie Snobs. That can get very annoying. Look's like I will be heading to the hinterlands for some great MBS. I will report back to see if this Goy agrees with the recommendations. I will be judging based on: (1) quality of MB, (2) saltiness; (3) greasiness; (4) quality of chicken; and most importantly, (5) quality of bagel chips. Price will be taken into consideration. May the best MB win!!!

Cheers.

You can hang out at Malibu Country Mart. Even if you bust on sightings, you will still enjoy the shopping. There is decent food there. They tend to "graze" at Googies as well.

Dark...Booths...Quiet Conversation...help!

You may want to check out Brentwood Restaurant and Lounge in Barrington Village on Barrington just south of Sunset, across the street from Strarbucks and next to Brent-Air Pharmacy. Very dark. Your conversations dont travel. Good dishes and great desserts. Probably the best background music in the city.

lunch places at Barrington/Wilshire

I agree that this would be a good starting place. I know people who drive here from Westwood for lunch. Unfortunately, most of what is on this stretch of Wilshire on is rather pedestrian, unless you are addicted to fish tacos which then puts you in paradise with Wahoo's.

FYI to those who recommended Bandera: Bandera is not open for lunch.
