Private rooms for small parties of 15 or less

Thanks, nsxtasy. I was gong to call the concierge but was concerned that I would get a biased or non-foodie response. I should at least use that as a screen and will call them on Monday.

Private rooms for small parties of 15 or less

Hi- I have a very similar need for a place for dinner for 12 attending a conference at the Swisotel and we would prefer a short walking distance. Any of these fit the bill or any other places come to mind? We are going to Chicago from Los Angeles.

Thanks.

Cupcakes :: the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly...

Lark Cake shop in Silverlake at Sunset in micheltorena is great. They specialize in cakes but they have cupcakes so you can try smaller sizes first. Maybe not a traditional cupcake but their carrot cake cupcakes are great. They often have what look like interesting experiments, too like once I saw a nutmeg cupcake.

Picnic at Hollywood Bowl on Thurs-Suggestions? (coming from Arcadia area)

I love the Roma Market in Pasadena on Lake north of the 210. If you are looking for bread and cheese it would be a good stop to make. I was thinking about your route: 210 to the 134 and then off the freeway at Cahuanga. Near the 134 and 170 there are tons of Armenian bakeries and groceries with spreads, olives, bread, fruit and baked goods. If that interests you, you could search the board for a recommendation. Enjoy!

Having lunch with a collegue today. We always go to the Paradise Cafe which is not so great in my book. Looking for a nice place for lunch. The person I am haing lunch with doesn't eat sushi (can you imagine?). It would be great if the restaurant was near 190th and Crenshaw or Western.

Thanks for any leads. I don't want to go to the Paradise again!

Los Angeles Pizza Company open & GREAT

Los Angeles Pizza Company is Finally open! I have been driving by it for months and it is finally open. I went in today and had a luch special that was a slice (pepperoni or cheese) salad and a soda for $5. I had a cheese slice which was GREAT. Thin crust, tangy sauce, good cheese texture. Salad was great, too. Kinda fancy with pine nuts and goat cheese but they got it right. Good balsamic vinagerette. Only one complaint. The slice was a little small. I wanted more. The guy behind the counter asked if I wanted another slice and I did but I told him no. Make it $6 and ad another slice and it is perfection.

Address is 712 N. Figueroa right before the Fig entrance to the 110 N. in Chinatown!
open 10 to 10.

The rest of the menu looks good but I am gonna stick to the cheese pizza until I have had enough to move on.

Chinese caterers?

I am excited to say that Din Tai Fung is going to make dumplings at my party in downtown L.A. They are going to make them and steam them on site and they will bring greenbeans and fried rice already cooked. This is the first time they are doing this but they said that they have done things like this a few times at the Arboretum up the street so if you want to have your event there, maybe DTF would cater.

Good luck!

East Side Italian Deli - NO!

I keep expecting to hear about Roma Market on Lake north of the 210 in Pasadena. You all have to go there and buy some cheese from the counterman. He will make you a sangwich if you ask him. No hot food, though. They have great bread, cheese, well priced fruit and vegs, great pasta selction. Really a good little market. And the guys behind the counter are from another era, another world! I love that place. My mom's famliy ran a little italian store in Buffalo, NY before I was born and seeing the guy's at Roma Market makes me think of all my uncles, now old and failing but still loving their food and traditions.

Breakfast on Valentine's Day

We can't get a babysitter for the evening, have busy afternoons so the SO and I are going to try to do a romantic breakfast after we drop the kids off at their schools.

Any ideas for romatic places with good food on a weekday? Even though it is V'Day I doubt anyone is doing anything special for breakfast. Seems like its even easy to get lunch reservations that day for popular restaurants, seems like people are saving up for dinner!

Here is another wrinkle: One kid is in Van Nuys the other in Hollywood so somewhere between those (or not too far from either) would be great.

TIA!

Nick's Cafe - Best Ham?

And Nick's sells ham bones for $1.00 that art the start of a great bowl of lentils or split pea soup!
I actually think their bacon is better than their ham.

Piggee!!Piggee!! Year of Pig, in Chinatown?

Oddly enough the best pork in (or at least nearby) may be at Nick's the breakfast and lunch counter right across from the cornfields and right near the Goldline station! Probably not what you are thinking about but it is REALY good!

Aside from Papa Christo's any Greek recs

Spent a month last summer in Greece, in Athens, Rhoades and a little island called Symi. Amazing time, AMAZING food!

I really miss the place, the people, the sun, the sea and the eats. Any recomendations? I live downtown so I have been to Papa Christo's a few times. I thought it was okay but I haven't found anything better. Is there anything else relatively nearby? Especially something homey but serving good seafood? Otherwise anything that will take me back farther away. San Pedro is far but I would go if there was nothing closer and got a strong rec.

Help me pretend I am back in Greece!

Thanks.

Any Italian bakeries in LA?

I agree Eagle Rock is worth the trip. The have a little shop area that sells things like tuna in olive oil, pasta, brioski and other necessities.

They also make great sandwiches. IMHO, better than Bay City's.

Searching for best CHINATOWN bakeries for pastries, etc.

IMHO Phoenix is famous but doesn't deliver the goods any more. Sad. Cake is not great and stingy with the strawberries.

Wonder Bakery is very good with lots of things. For a party with Chinese food, I ask them in advance to make little egg custards (2 or 3 bites). They make them fresh for me and have them ready for me to pick up and I can serve them while they are still warm which is the BEST way to serve them! YUM!

Who has the best Hot and Sour Soup?

I have eaten hot and sour soup in just about every restaurant in Chinatown. Nobody does it great. I ask for it extra hot and extra spicy but it seems like everyone makes it just to give free with the lunch specials and nobody really tries to make it as good as it can be. In fact, if I really want a good bowl of hot and sour I have to ask my wife to make it! (She makes the BEST).

The only bowl in CT that I like is at Zen Mei Bistro but they put red pepper in it instead of black pepper. Not traditional (is hot and sour soup at all traditional or authentic? dunno) but it is very good and very chunky, not starchy.

Any recs? Prefer CT but not too far out is okay, too.

Thanks.

Needin' A Beefy French Dip

Gelson's in Silverlake has a steam tray with tri-tip roast that is GREAT and they will make a sandwich with it. I usually just get horseradish but you can get au jus which I bet is great and any other condiments you like. I just decided I have to have one right now. I wonder what time they start serving?

chinatown markets/supermarkets

Ai Hoi is very good. On Hill just south of college. They have a parking lot and validate. I just wish they would label the produce in english as well as Chinese so I would have an idea what the heck I am eating! Great pork, too. I am afraid to get fish there but they have fresh tofu (sometimes still hot!).
