Mexican near downtown Phoenix

The first place I thought of was Los Dos Molinos at 10th St. and Washington.

Since she likes more Americanized places, she may have to choose her items carefully so she doesn't get blown away by the heat.

Mexican in Sedona?

I would recommend Cafe Elote too. I had brunch there in August. (They're no longer doing that.) The food I had then would make me go back and have dinner.

Finally: Pita Jungle Open in Arcadia (PHX)

I've passed by the new location a couple times. If I remember correctly, the new locale will be around Southern and Dobson.

CAFE ELOTE - SEDONA - long

Thanks! I'll be in Sedona after August 17. I'll have to try dinner there.

Review: China Chili - Phoenix (w/ photos!)

I have to say that I've stopped ordering Kung Pao chicken at China Chile. I usually get Vegetables Deluxe to go. That's why I was so happy with the Sizzling Scallops and Prawns--it was a real meal!

Review: China Chili - Phoenix (w/ photos!)

Thanks for reviewing a restaurant in my 'hood.

Last week at China Chile, I had a dish I think was called Sizzling Scallops and Prawns with Black Pepper Sauce. (That's should be pretty close to it's real name; it includes all the important words.) It was fantastic--the scallops were tender and the sauce was great. I'm short on description words today, but the sauce was the kind in which you want to soak up as much as you can and not leave any behind. I tried (I really tried) to eat it all while I was there, but I ended up taking some home. It was still good as leftovers.

I got the rec for the sizzling scallops as I was driving there. Next time, I'll have to try the wontons.

Review: Sonora Brewhouse - Phoenix (w/ photos!)

I had the Sonora Soaked Bratwurst and kettle chips last night, and I loved it! I could see myself getting addicted to their bratwurst and kettle chips.

I can't remember the last time I had sauerkraut--I'm not even sure I've eaten it before--but this was good. When I ordered the bratwurst, I was wondering if there was going to be too much bread, but the brat/baguette ratio was good.

And the kettle chips were tasty. I never thought that a restaurant might make its own chips. I'm used to choosing a mini-bag of them with a sandwich. The chipolte ketchup didn't come with my meal, but the chips were great without it.

And it is a brewhouse too. I had a hefeweizen. I rarely drink and I don't know how people judge beer, but I liked it.

You might do a search for "Sedona" for some more suggestions.

Zoƫ's Kitchen (PHX) - short rant

I bought a sandwich from Zoe's on Sunday and I had sticker shock for what I got (Meditteranean tuna in a pita, side of slaw, and a bag of Lay's Potato Chips for about $8 with tax). I've eaten there before so I shouldn't have been surprised.

What I should have done, as I've done before, is buy the tuna by the pound and forgo the pita packed with lettuce (not much tuna), the slaw (which is still in my fridge) and a bag of "not very special" chips.

Sometimes it takes me a few times to learn.

Best Breakfast Bars

I love the LUNA Sunrise Vanilla Almond Bar. (I think "Sunrise" is their breakfast bar.) The flavors Chai Tea and Dulce de Leche fall into the same category for me. I just bought a box of the Vanilla and the Chai from Whole Foods. They give you a 10% discount for buying a box. The checkout girl said you can mix and match too.

How about an Arizona Board?

For clarification, I just checked the Southwest board and only 6 posts did not state the location: 3 for Phoenix and 3 for Vegas.

I do agree there are lots of AZ posts that do overtake the board.

Recipe for Spicy Thai Spaghetti Please

This sounds like Pad Thai.

Epicurious.com has some recipes for that:

Flagstaff Dining

I didn't know about the Chinese buffet! My sister's family often goes there, and I kind of laughed inside (my snobby PHX side). But I'm glad to hear about it!

Thanks for opening my eyes too!

Flagstaff Dining

I kept hoping all day that someone would respond to you because I'm planning on moving there.

I can tell you from my experience is that the dining in Flag will be more limited than that of a bigger city. There are the usual suspects: sushi, Thai, Mexican, Chinese, and Indian, but fewer restaurant choices. My favorite Indian place closed to move to Scottsdale. :-( The Thai restaurant (south of the RR tracks--can't remember the name) has been good imo.

For fine dining Flagstaff style (which you mentioned isn't a priority), the Cottage Place http://www.cottageplace.com/ seems to get nice reviews; I've eaten and enjoyed Josephine's too http://www.josephinesrestaurant.com/.

There are a few wine bars, at least one brewery that I know of, and a variety of coffee shops (including Starbucks). I ate at Cuvee 928 recently http://www.cuvee928winebar.com/ and I really liked the casual atmosphere and I thought the food was really good -- $9 for a brisket sandwich with a bleu cheese fondue; it was delicious.

Overall, Flag is very laid back and casual. I feel like my internal engine is running a 100 mph compared to people in Flag. (I live in Phoenix.) I love visiting, and I tell myself I'll cook more when I move there.

If you move there or visit, please share what you find out! I'll be up there the weekend of May 12. I usually don't eat out because my sister cooks, but if I do, I'll share.

My thoughts go out to your friend.

I went to Cuvee a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. I wrote a review about it, but my computer crashed taking it away and I never got around to writing it again.

CuveeI located on Heritage Square. I really enjoyed the brisket sandwich. My sister had some lamb meatballs and really enjoyed them except that's all there was on the dish--6 meatballs. No salad or side. We called it the Atkins portion of the menu.

About the wine, I don't know much about it so I just order without a lot of knowledge or understanding. But take a look at their online menu for wine selections. They offer wine tastings too. http://www.cuvee928winebar.com/

I hope this helps in your quest for finding the best way to acknowledge your friend's gift of time and service to the organization.

My dinner at Carly's Bistro -- PHX

We were there late Sunday night. Thanks for the information!

My dinner at Carly's Bistro -- PHX

I really liked the bread for the paninis. I haven't had a panini at Postinos yet, but I just might have to try one. It would be another cool place to take him, although I am thinking of taking him Fate for the next meal.

My dinner at Carly's Bistro -- PHX

Most of the time, I just read the reviews and posts by other people, but I wanted to say thanks for all the information people post.

Last night, a friend from Flagstaff and I needed a place to go for dinner. I live around Central and Virginia, and I went through the usual suspects. But then I remembered that a Chowhound had mentioned Carly's Bistro on 3rd Street and Roosevelt. It's so close to my house and I had never been there before. After glancing at the menu on-line, my friend and I went to Carly's. It was perfect for what we wanted.

For an appetizer, we had Feta Rosa. It's a mixture of roasted red pepper, garlic and feta dip served with grilled pita wedges. The pita was great -- really hot and fresh. The dip didn't have a strong feta taste, and it was creamy, but I loved the pitas more.

For dinner, we ordered two different paninis, the Europa and Caprese. The Europa had roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, and spinach with smoked mozzarella. The artichokes added the depth of flavor to the sandwich. The Caprese isn't on their on-line menu, but I think it had basil, tomatoes, pesto, and mozzarella. It was fine, but we both agreed the Europa was better.

Also, we both had the orzo salad as our side. It was really simple: some chopped olives, olive oil and some seasoning. My friend said he liked it even more than the sandwich. I think those items are in two different categories, but I agreed I liked the orzo a lot and thought it would be easy to replicate at home.

The atmosphere at Carly's was very cool. My Flagstaff friend said he didn't feel as if he were in Phoenix. The bistro is small with lots of different art on the walls. Plus, last night, there was a jazz musician that played. The negative, that will soon change come May 1, is that people could smoke at their tables. This only happened as we were starting to leave, so it didn't mar our experience.

Overall, it wasn't a life changing meal, but I would go back because it was good food in a very cool atmosphere. In a way, Carly's Bistro made me seem very hip to my Flagstaff friend.

Thank you again, Chowhounds, for the great information you share!

Good Breakfast Place near Biltmore

I believe the Good Egg is part of the same company. There's a location on the NE corner of Central and Camelback, next to AJ's.

Phoenix Family Dining Thomas Road/N.Central Area?

Nicole is great, but (in my opinion) I don't think of My Florist as a family place. The few times I've been there, I haven't seen kids around. And depending on the night, it can be loud with the cement floors, people talking, and the piano playing.

There is also Wild Thaiger at Central and Virginia (1/2 mile south of Thomas).
http://www.wildthaiger.com/
They're open until 9 during the week, and 10 on the weekends. Someone on the board mentioned they're slow with service. I've only eaten there once, and it was a while ago.

Montreal Bagels [Moved from Manhattan Board]

On the Splendid Table last weekend, the Sterns reviewed Montreal bagels they ate in (guess where?) Montreal. If you listen to the broadcast, they give a description.

From the broadcast:
Looks like a regular bagel, but slightly smaller. At first, Michael said thought they were too sweet, and the texture isn't as muscular. But after a few days of eating them, they were hooked. They have a wood-smoked, slightly (a hint) sweet flavor.

http://splendidtable.publicradio.org/whereweeat/stern_babka_bagels.html

And here's a recipe of a Montreal bagel from another (earlier) ST broadcast:
http://splendidtable.publicradio.org/recipes/bread_bagels.html

BTW, the Sterns said they don't exist outside of Montreal.

Ideas for pomegranate seeds?

I put them in guacomole. This idea is from Cafe Barrio in Phoenix.

Suggestions on how to make Jell-O exciting (non-alcohol version)?

I believe I've had this! And I admit that I did like it. It was very dessert-y.

PHX: Anniversary dinner advice? (extra degree of difficulty)

I agree with kjhart on this one. With an anniversary, I think romance. For me Lon's has that kind of atmosphere and wonderful food. Durant's reminds me of my parents generation (I'm 40)--which isn't bad, but just not romantic.

Phoenix: Good bagel shops?

The New Times did an article last fall that describes the bagels for shops in town (including Tempe, Scottsdale, and Fountain HIlls). They only mention Karsh's and Chompies for Phoenix. I thought it described the bagels really well.
