Openings & Closings: April, May and June 2015

Finally, signs of life at the old Benedict's location on the corner of Monkland and Royal in NDG, dormant since the fire a few years ago. According to signs, it will become a Bacaro Pizzeria Urbaine, which currently has a restaurant on Ste-Catherine in Westmount. Signs say opening this fall.

Tea sandwiches

Fressers would do party sandwiches if that would fit the bill. (And they're delicious.)

Solo Lunch, Plateau

Just a heads-up for the OP that many of the above restos don't have a terasse, as you'd requested.

Aux Vivres has a small one out back and might fit the bill, but it's a vegan menu and might not be your cup of tea. On the other hand, the food is delicious and has charmed many omnivores I know. I highly recommend the "BLT" with smoked coconut bacon.

Cafe Santropol has a beautiful terasse in the back, and original sandwiches. Haven't been there in years but it's a Montreal classic.

Smoked Meat w/non-meat eating husband

If the weather is decent I agree with the picnic/Coco Rico for takeout chicken sandwich idea as being the best of both worlds.

But if the weather is poor and you do want to go to Schwartz's, as a non smoked-meat eating chicken-eater myself, my recommendation would be:

- skip the turkey sandwich, it's just processed turkey roll
- consider the chicken "combo" platter, it comes with half (I think it's half?) a hot smoked chicken, which is delicious and studded with spices. There may be a sharing charge if you don't get another meal. The only problem is they're often out of the smoked chicken, so then your husband would be out of luck.

Recommendations for Old Montreal

Sure, I didn't mean to imply that the entire Old Port was a tourist trap, only that a visitor should be careful of where they go in that area. :)

Recommendations for Old Montreal

Brit & Chips - http://www.britandchips.com/
Olive & Gourmando - http://oliveetgourmando.com/
Le Cartet - http://lecartet.com/
Chinatown (short walk away) - Pho Bang NY for Vietnamese, lots more

Beware the tourist traps, like those down by the Old Port area. :)

Lots of other Old Montreal recs if you do a quick search of the boards, it's one of the most popular areas of the city for tourists. Have a great trip!

Seafood restaurant in Montreal

@JerkPork - I think it depends when you go. They usually have a wide variety of seafood, I was just there a week ago and they had monkfish and lobster and whole dory, among many others. Only time out of many I was there and the selection was limited. I've always seen prices on each item, too (per pound). It's true I've never seen a menu.

Seafood restaurant in Montreal

Not for the anniversary meal (too casual) but an excellent seafood restaurant is Rayan:

You choose your fish/seafood from the counter and then they cook it to your liking.

Restaurant Coréen Mon Ami - 모나미

Very glad to hear you liked it!

They have a lot of different sauces (not sure which you tried?) but if you're happy with your honey, then awesome. ;)

Joe Beef vs. Liverpool House

Brit and Chips in Old Montreal is good if you're in the mood for that. Like O&G it's also very busy at lunch, suggest going earlier (they seem to open at 11) or later.

Restaurant Coréen Mon Ami - 모나미

I've been here a few more times since I posted this review and tried a few more dishes. Here are the results:

- beef bulgogi - everyone loved this (I don't eat beef so I didn't have any)
- noodles in black bean sauce with vegetables - gloppy, too much sauce, not enough other ingredients. It was also full of ground meat, which I didn't expect. Wouldn't order again.
- "sausages with vegetables" - almost no one touched this because the "sausages" turned out just to be little cocktail hot dogs, which isn't what anyone was expecting. The veggies were chunks of peppers and onions. Wouldn't order again.

We tried to order the ramen as takeout but they said it doesn't travel well and suggested the veggie dumplings instead, so we had that. They were good, but unfortunately fried, so we ended up with both fried chicken and fried dumplings - too much fried in one meal. :)

I've heard good things about the bibimbap so I plan to try that.

Looking for Russian grocery store in Montreal

I've never heard of this. Any idea if it has another name or in what part of town it's located? It's not Epicure, is it? http://epicuremarket.ca/

FRIED CHICKEN AT DAWA IN NDG

> Did they actually turn you away without a reservation?

They did one night because there was simply no room. It's a fairly small place.

I'd love to know what you think after you go!

Top Food-Related Items to Purchase

Lots of great suggestions there! Tons of amazing maple products at Marché des Saveurs at the Jean-Talon Market.

Just be wary about bringing back any meat, especially beef (hello Mad Cow scare!), since you may be forced to throw it out at the border despite the rules and how it's packaged, which would be super sad. :) The regulations on meat change from time to time and it can also depend on how you're travelling (plane vs. car, etc.) and on the whims of a particular customs employee.

Cabane a sucre Au Pied de Cochon

Maybe people don't want to open this gigantic thread anymore? ;) Hoping someone starts a new one, I think this 6-year old thread's had a good run.

One more question - how big is the place? About how many seats or tables? Or is it mainly takeout?

Coffee & Chicory Montreal

I've bought cans of Cafe du Monde brand coffee at Asian markets because it's sometimes used to make Vietnamese coffee. Try Marché Hawaii, Kim Phat, or Chinatown grocery stores.

Looking for Saturday brunch that takes reservations

"I know that Lawrence once took reservations for groups, I don't know if that is still the case (and if we would be too last minute)"

Only one way to find out: call or text them and ask if they have space. As far as I know they take reservations for groups 5 and over.

EVOO on Notre-Dame has also taken a group brunch reservation, and Prohibition on Monkland takes reservations though it's small, so you'd need to call ASAP. (I found EVOO good, but not as good as Lawrence, which would be my top choice if I were in your shoes.)

I've been wanting to try Café Régine, which says they take reservations for up to 8 on weekends.

Finally, for something a bit different, Byblos for a Persian brunch. (Not 100% but pretty sure they take reservations.)

Heading to Montreal by way of NYC next weekend and feeling overwhelmed and under-prepared!

"Brunch - Lawrence (before 10am)
Lunch - Schwartz's
Dinner - Au Pied de Cochon (7pm)"

I have to say I think that cramming these three into the same day is too much, given that Lawrence opens at 10 am you have a reservation for 7 at WPDC.

Think about skipping Schwartz's and grabbing a late dinner there when you arrive on Friday. (Edit: you'll also miss the Saturday lunch lineups that way!) They're open til 1:30 am on Fridays and within walking distance of Quartier des Spectacles or a quick cab ride if you're really pooped.

"do you need reservations for brunch"

I don't think Lawrence takes reservations for bunch for only two people. They open at 10, so if you're there a bit before hopefully you'll get a table. It's worth the effort, I think :)

Looking for a location to host a private casual reception for 50 people near Palais des Congress

I second this, Daylight Factory would be great as a venue, though I've never had the food there. Maybe you could do a tasting before booking. :)

CHINESE FOOD...NEED TO FIND GREAT BREADED JUMBO SHRIMPS & CHICKEN SOO GUY

My theory is that this type of what I call "Suburban Chinese" food has gone out of fashion. I haven't been able to find anything decent of this ilk in years. As you've said yourself, it was a style popular in the past but just isn't today, with the rise of other styles of Chinese food in Montreal. Maybe someone can think of something...
