Heading to Montreal by way of NYC next weekend and feeling overwhelmed and under-prepared!

"Brunch - Lawrence (before 10am)
Lunch - Schwartz's
Dinner - Au Pied de Cochon (7pm)"

I have to say I think that cramming these three into the same day is too much, given that Lawrence opens at 10 am you have a reservation for 7 at WPDC.

Think about skipping Schwartz's and grabbing a late dinner there when you arrive on Friday. (Edit: you'll also miss the Saturday lunch lineups that way!) They're open til 1:30 am on Fridays and within walking distance of Quartier des Spectacles or a quick cab ride if you're really pooped.

"do you need reservations for brunch"

I don't think Lawrence takes reservations for bunch for only two people. They open at 10, so if you're there a bit before hopefully you'll get a table. It's worth the effort, I think :)

Looking for a location to host a private casual reception for 50 people near Palais des Congress

I second this, Daylight Factory would be great as a venue, though I've never had the food there. Maybe you could do a tasting before booking. :)

CHINESE FOOD...NEED TO FIND GREAT BREADED JUMBO SHRIMPS & CHICKEN SOO GUY

My theory is that this type of what I call "Suburban Chinese" food has gone out of fashion. I haven't been able to find anything decent of this ilk in years. As you've said yourself, it was a style popular in the past but just isn't today, with the rise of other styles of Chinese food in Montreal. Maybe someone can think of something...

The New & Improved Openings & Closings January, February and March 2015

Maisonbistro mentioned that the Westminster taco place was closed. I was just at the Sherbrooke/Royal location and it was hopping. Much better location, glad they're there.

Shirataki japanese low carb noodles

Like others said, Asian markets. They have them at the Korean grocery on Sherbrooke West across from Akhavan in NDG, in one of the refrigerated cases.

First time in Montreal. Looking for "can't miss" breakfast, lunch and dinner options.

Since you'll be here over the weekend I'd highly recommend a couple of places for breakfast/brunch:

Lawrence - http://lawrencerestaurant.com/ - go a bit before opening to grab a spot and avoid lineups. Get the homemade doughnuts for dessert.

Prohibition - http://www.prohibitionmontreal.com/ - in NDG, if you'd like to see an off-the-beaten-tourist-track neighbourhood. Specialties include blueberry ricotta pancakes or French toast with fried chicken

Gryphon d'or - http://www.gryphondor.com/ - another NDG spot, specialties include their homemade scones and Guinness eggs benedict

A few days in Montreal with a vegetarian mom and a somewhat radical college-age daughter?

Others have the veggie options covered, so let me hone in on the fish angle, since your girlfriend eats fish.

I'd highly recommend Rayan for an off-the-beaten path, fantastic fish & seafood experience. It's not a trendy place but if they're looking for good food and an unpretentious atmosphere, check it out. Also highly recommend their potatoes and salad. The grilled veggies are also yummy but you can get those anywhere.

I've only been to the one on Cote-des-Neiges.

For some incredible Peruvian fish & seafood check out El Jibaro on St-Hubert - again, off the beaten path. Fun atmosphere and amazing food.

Restaurant Coréen Mon Ami - 모나미

Restaurant Coréen Mon Ami - 모나미

This NDG Korean place specializing in fried chicken - but with a ton of other specialties on the menu - deserves its own thread.

Restaurant Coréen Mon Ami landed on Somerled at the corner of Madison late last year. The spot had previously occupied a rotating collection of mediocre to bad pan-Asian or Italian restaurants for over a decade, but I predict this one is going to stick around a while.

The place is packed - mostly with Koreans, always a good sign. The first time we tried to go without a reservation we were apologetically turned away, so we made a reservation for last night.

The waiter was super friendly and since we were obviously not Korean he gently asked if we'd had Korean food before, and explained that the salad and daikon pickles came with the fried chicken as a counterpoint to the chicken.

We got a full soy sauce and garlic chicken which came split into about 10 pieces. (We could finish only two-thirds of it and took the rest home.) Our chicken was juicy, the skin perfectly crunchy, and the sauce just right, not too thin and not too thick.

Some chicken varieties come in half portions, some are offered in boneless varieties; sauces include sweet-and-spicy, green onion, and a super-spicy cheesy sauce that nearly blew a friend's head off one time when he accidentally inhaled a chili pepper.

We also ordered the "cheesy corn" - while delicious, it felt more like a Southern US side dish. It was very good though, and I'd get it again - creamy and hearty.

The menu also includes Korean faves like bimimbap, beef bulgogi, and sushi, along with less common specialties, like fried chicken gizzards, jokbal (pigs' feet), and golbaengi somyeo (spicy freshwater snails with thin noodles).

I think this place is destined to be a keeper. Their only problem seems to be handling the crowds, so be sure to make a reservation before heading out. They also do takeout, but they warned us that it can take a while, so call well in advance.

Best Chinese restaurants in Montreal (not sure we had this kind of post before, anyway, it's my version)

SnackHappy, have you been to Cuisine Xiang lately? I stopped going a year or two ago because the menu changed completely and became much more humdrum/westernized. If it's back in good form I'll give it another try.

Cheap and decent groceries in Lasalle?

The fresh fruit juices at the juice centre in the middle is one of my favourite things at Sami Fruits.

Cheap and decent groceries in Lasalle?

The Sami fish place was good but I hated the fact that there were no numbers (or at least the fishmongers didn't call them) and it's pretty chaotic with crowds around the counters and people getting served in no particular order. It's a personal pet peeve, I'm sure it'd bother others less than me. Haven't been back in a while, maybe it's better now on that front.

Looking for marbled rye bread in Montreal

I second Snowdon Bakery's marble rye. In addition to their factory outlet in NDG their bread is carried by many supermarkets around town. Look for the orange and white label.

Help for Montreal Visit

Depending how old your son is you could drop him at Aux Vivres further up on St-Laurent Blvd. before your meal or join him there for dessert. Their vegan "BLT" with coconut "bacon" is the addiction of many a carnivore I know. Also has excellent smoothies and lots of other goodies.

Are you thinking of the Dic Ann location on St-Jacques in NDG? The one mentioned above at 2079 Sainte-Catherine West is downtown, near rue du Fort.

Real Beijing Duck / Peking Duck - best place in Montreal?

Yes, Mon Nan is still serving their 3-course dinner. I had it a couple of months ago, $30 for a half-duck, perfect for 2 people. Now located at 43 Rue de la Gauchetière Est. It was pretty good, though the sliced duck for pancakes was a bit dry.

Tiny Taco Place in Montreal West

Went to the newest incarnation of this place - Tacos Tijuana - on Sherbrooke, in the old Ma's location.

5889 Rue Sherbrooke Ouest

It was the same couple from Montreal West (they said the Westminster location was still open) and the same menu. We spent $18 taxes in for 5 tacos, delicious as always. The place has a few tables and bright decoration. No public bathroom though, and the stuff is messy to eat, so we still prefer to take out.
