Food Events & Festivals in Quebec & Montreal - 2012 Master List
The first edition of TASTE MTL - touted as a "restaurant week"-type event, has been announced by Tourism Montreal for November 1 to 11, 2012.
No website yet, but a list of participating restaurants is here (PDF):
http://www.octgm.com/taste-mtl/participating-restaurant.pdf
They include Bar Tazaflores, Birks Café, Brasserie T!, Chez Delmo, Chez l'Épicier, Chez Victoire, Ferreira Café, Toqué! and Van Horne.
Three amazing days/nights in Montreal from NYC (long)
No kidding - 2000 emails in 20 minutes? Craziness!

> Plateaumaman, we are thinking of hitting APDC Sugar Shack but it is impossible to get reservations.
To clarify just in case - I think Plateaumaman was talking about the new *apple-themed* menu they will do this fall during apple harvest season at the sugar shack location - so not so far off, actually. ;-) And since it's brand-new, it's much less well-known (so far) than the spring sugar-shack experience, so maybe reservations are easier to get.

best lunches in montreal
Milos for Greek-style fish & seafood - http://milos.ca/restaurants/montreal/menus/lunch
They seem to have removed the price but I think it was somewhere between $20-25.
Sandwiches / picnic food near Concordia
Great and cheap Turkish food at two places:
- Antep Kebab on de Maisonneuve near Guy (kebabs in pita)
- Avesta on Ste-Catherine - a bit less of a takeout-type place, but a borek pastry or gozleme flatbread sandwich (I love the spicy spinach) could work
Also, Chinese buns etc. at Harmonie or whatever it's called now in the Guy metro complex

Thanks for taking the time to report back in such detail. Glad you had a good trip!
"we noticed that the vendors at both Jean Talon and Atwater were taking Driscoll Strawberries from CA and dumping them in new containers and presenting them at Quebec strawberries"
Wow, that's disgusting. I must be very naive as I never imagined that happening. Ugh.
Un-crowded weekday lunch in Mile-End/ Plateau
Decent food, good lunch offerings, inexpensive, quiet, not too cramped, crowded or fancy... I think Caraibe Delight on Parc near Villeneuve could fit the bill. I've tried the chick-pea potato roti and the curry chicken - both delicious. The optional pumpkin purée is worth the extra $1.50-2. Peanut punch is yummy. Friendly service.

ISO gluten free cake
Mi & Stu's bakery in Mile End is now open (also mentioned earlier in 2012 Openings) - there's a nice review here:
http://www.urbanexpressions.ca/food/story/mi-stu-bakes-free-of-gluten-dairy-and-nuts
Their products are also free of dairy and nuts in addition to being gluten-free. A good addition to the city for those with allergies/intolerances and other dietary concerns.
Anyone know where to find DATE SYRUP (to make Dibis W'rashi?)
Try Akhavan, a wonderful shop full of hard-to-find Iranian products (among *many* other things!) NDG and Pierrefonds locations.

Julieta Cuisine Latine
I had a lovely meal with friends at Julieta Cuisine Latine a few weeks back. Everyone enjoyed the food and the experience.
My favourite dish was the corn soup - creamy and delectable, with small grilled squares of a mild white fresh cheese and crunchy fried onions adding contrasting textural elements. I also enjoyed the dorade (I think that was the fish - forgot to write it down) with quinoa pilaff (pic below). The "pudding tiède" dessert was the only minor disappointment - but maybe because I was expecting something completely different. (It was also pretty tiny.)
The brunch menu - now served on Saturday as well as Sunday - looks fantastic and I plan to try it out.
I found the place cozy and unpretentious, and the server genuinely friendly and helpful. There were only two other parties in the place the whole time we were there, so I would encourage anyone who's been thinking of checking them out to go ahead and do it!
Also pictured: onglet, magret de canard, tiradito, cachapa. Some of the menu offerings when we were there were slightly different than what was listed on the website.
Summer Holiday Closures 2012
I can't believe it's that time of year again, but apparently it is, so I'm starting this year's list.
Lawrence will close after tomorrow's brunch and reopen on June 13.
Taste of the Caribbean Festival
I've never been, but you can read a bit about previous editions here. It's morphed a fair bit over the years so I've no idea if some of the complaints (i.e. long lineups) have been addressed. If you do end up going I'd love to hear your report.

25 Montreal Restaurants Over 25 Years Old
The title says it all. Thought this was an interesting list - with more in the comments. For those who don't read French, all testaurants had to not be part of a chain and been in continuous operation for 25 years or more, not including temporary closures due to fire or whatever.

Eastern Townships
You didn't mention bakeries, but if you're interested in those too... this bakery in the Eastern Townships might be worth a stop. They made amazing garlic rolls for the Ste-Anne's garlic festival last year (only a once-a-year thing, sadly) but if you're out that way, maybe check it out:

Gvina Levana or Quark cheese?
They have Israeli quark at the IGA on Cote-St-Luc Rd, as well as lots of other kosher dairy products.
Coming back to Montreal after 3 years of Dutchness...
Just in case you weren't aware... if you liked Sparrow's brunch a few years back, you'll certainly like Lawrence, since the folks who used to do the brunch (and lunch) at the Sparrow are now running Lawrence, so their brunch is the same as the old Sparrow brunch. :-) They post the menu on their Twitter account so you can check it out. https://twitter.com/#!/lawrencefood
Shiso Plants in Montreal?
Three avenues to pursue:
- ask the JTM Birri & Frères store. Last year I bought a fairly-hard-to-find Thai basil plant there. 514-276-3202
- ask the Miyamoto Japanese grocery-store folks - if they don't carry it themselves they may know where you can get it. 514-481-1952
- ask the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre if they have any leads. 514-728-1996
Good luck, and please report back if you find it!
Visiting Montreal with 2yo toddler
Hiya, you'll find lots of recent guidance on centrally located places to dine with a toddler throughout the boards, as it's a frequent question. You can start here: http://www.chow.com/search?query=toddlers&type=Topic&board_name=Quebec+%28including+Montreal%29&search_board_id=22&from_date=1+year+ago
Hope this points you in the right direction, and I'm sure others will chime in as well.
Transit info is kinda OT for Chowhound, but you can find current fares here:

> We are staying at B&B Maam Bolduc!
That's really cool, I had no idea they ran a B&B!
Have a wonderful trip.

Ah - and for those who are into that sort of thing, TA will be holding their pie-eating contest at 1 pm as part of the festivities.
Best bar/casual restaurant near Trudeau airport (within 20 minute drive?)
No more than a 20-minute drive in my experience. poloprincess also started a second thread saying they were willing to go a fair bit further afield than originally stated - perhaps I should have posted there.

Best bar/casual restaurant near Trudeau airport (within 20 minute drive?)
If you are willing to give up on the idea of "Québécois" food (however that's defined) you could venture out further into the West Island - so traffic shouldn't bee too bad and you'd be avoiding downtown entirely - and check out one of these great places in DDO/Pierrefonds:
Shahi Palace - amazing Indian food, family-run casual place. Faves: balti chicken and channa bhatura. BYOB, there's an SAQ nearby

Lawrence amanzing scrambled eggs recipe?!
My guess is they add some form of cream to the eggs, if anything - maybe 10 or 15%. I don't detect any of the tanginess I associate with cream cheese or creme fraiche when I have their scrambled eggs. You could always try asking them on Twitter what their secret is - who knows, maybe they'll oblige. ;-)

Biggest food store in Montreal for dried beans?
Not sure what their bean selection is like, but maybe worth a call to Anatol's?
